When a pulse of light reflects from a mirror that is travelling close to the speed of light, Einstein's theory of relativity predicts that it will be up-shifted to a substantially higher frequency and compressed to a much shorter duration. This scenario is realized by the relativistically oscillating plasma surface generated by an ultraintense laser focused onto a solid target. Until now, it has been unclear whether the conditions necessary to exploit such phenomena can survive such an extreme interaction with increasing laser intensity. Here, we provide the first quantitative evidence to suggest that they can. We show that the occurrence of surface smoothing on the scale of the wavelength of the generated harmonics, and plasma denting of the irradiated surface, enables the production of high-quality X-ray beams focused down to the diffraction limit. These results improve the outlook for generating extreme X-ray fields, which could in principle extend to the Schwinger limit.

Filamented electron beams have been observed to be emitted from the rear of thin solid targets irradiated by a high-intensity short-pulse laser when there is low-density plasma present at the back of the target. These. observations are consistent with a laser-generated beam of relativistic electrons propagating through the, target. which is subsequently fragmented by a Weibel-like instability in the low-density plasma at the. rear. These, measurements are in agreement with particle-in-cell simulations and theory, since the filamentation instability is predicted to be dramatically enhanced when the electron beam density approaches that of the background plasma.

The generation of the third and fourth harmonics from the interaction of a 1 ps, ultraviolet (UV), krypton fluoride (KrF) laser with a solid surface is investigated. The conversion efficiency is seen to increase linearly with I lambda(2), with a transition from specular harmonic emission to emission into 2 pi steradians occurring between 10(15) and 10(16) W cm(-2) mu m(2). The diffuse emission is strongly dependent on the incidence angle of the laser, with the peak in emission at around 30 degrees being consistent with measurements for resonance absorption. Finally, the conversion efficiencies are found to be in agreement with particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations including appropriate density scalelengths. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

We present images of the source of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonic emission at a wavelength of 220 Angstrom from the interaction of a 20 TW, 1.053 mu m Nd:glass laser beam focused to intensities up to 4x10(18) W cm(-2) onto a solid target. From these measurements we determine an upper limit to the source size and brightness of the harmonic emission to show its efficacy as a novel source of short-pulse, coherent XUV radiation. We also demonstrate the empirical scaling of the harmonic generation efficiency with irradiance up to 10(19) W mu m(2) cm(-2), and extrapolate to estimate the possible source brightness at higher irradiances. These source brightnesses are compared to those available from an x-ray laser system. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Here a self-consistent one-dimensional continuum model is presented for a narrow gap plane-parallel dc glow discharge. The governing equations consist of continuity and momentum equations for positive and negative ions and electrons coupled with Poisson's equation. A singular perturbation method is developed for the analysis of high pressure dc glow discharge. The kinetic processes of the ionization, electron attachment, and ion-ion recombination are included in the model. Explicit results are obtained for the asymptotic limits: delta=(r(D)/L)(2)--> 0, omega=(r(S)/L)(2)--> 0, where r(D) is the Debye radius, r(S) is recombination length, and L is the gap length. The discharge gap divides naturally into four layers with multiple space scales: anode fall region, positive column, transitional region, cathode fall region and diffusion layer adjacent to the cathode surface, its formation is discussed. The effects of the gas pressure, gap spacing and dc voltage on the electrical properties of the layers and its dimension are investigated. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. The effects of incorporating pulverized fuel ash (PFA) and ground granulated blastfurnace slag (ggbs) on the workability (slump), adiabatic temperature rise during hydration and long-term (up to 570 days) strength of high-strength concretes have been measured. Binary (PFA/ggbs and Portland cement) and ternary (PFA/ggbs plus microsilica and Portland cement) blends at water-binder ratios from 0.38 to 0.20 have been tested. The results show broadly similar effects to those in lower strength concrete, although of differing magnitude in some cases. Some potential advantages of ternary blends for optimization of properties have been demonstrated.
