In the paper we give an exposition of the major results concerning the relation between first order cohomology of Banach algebras of operators on a Banach space with coefficients in specified modules and the geometry of the underlying Banach space. In particular we shall compare the properties weak amenability and amenability for Banach algebras A(X), the approximable operators on a Banach space X. Whereas amenability is a local property of the Banach space X, weak amenability is often the consequence of properties of large scale geometry.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for amenability of the Banach algebra of approximable operators on a Banach space. We further investigate the relationship between amenability of this algebra and factorization of operators, strengthening known results and developing new techniques to determine whether or not a given Banach space carries an amenable algebra of approximable operators. Using these techniques, we are able to show, among other things, the non-amenability of the algebra of approximable operators on Tsirelson’s space.

We study some properties of almost Dunford-Pettis operators and we characterize pairs of Banach lattices for which the adjoint of an almost Dunford-Pettis operator inherits the same property and look at conditions under which an operator is almost Dunford-Pettis whenever its adjoint is.

A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is called frequently hypercyclic if there exists $x\in X$ such that the lower density of the set $\{n\in\N:T^nx\in U\}$ is positive for any non-empty open subset $U$ of $X$. Bayart and Grivaux have raised a question whether there is a frequently hypercyclic operator on any separable infinite dimensional Banach space. We prove that the spectrum of a frequently hypercyclic operator has no isolated points. It follows that there are no frequently hypercyclic operators on all complex and on some real hereditarily indecomposable Banach spaces, which provides a negative answer to the above question.

It is shown that if $11$, the operator $I+T$ attains its norm. A reflexive Banach space $X$ and a bounded rank one operator $T$ on $X$ are constructed such that $\|I+T\|>1$ and $I+T$ does not attain its norm.

We give a short proof of existence of disjoint hypercyclic tuples of operators of any given length on any separable infinite dimensional Fr\'echet space. Similar argument provides disjoint dual hypercyclic tuples of operators of any length on any infinite dimensional Banach space with separable dual.

New FPGA architectures for the ordinary Montgomery multiplication algorithm and the FIOS modular multiplication algorithm are presented. The embedded 18×18-bit multipliers and fast carry look-ahead logic located on the Xilinx Virtex2 Pro family of FPGAs are used to perform the ordinary multiplications and additions/subtractions required by these two algorithms. The architectures are developed for use in Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems over GF(p), which require modular field multiplication to perform elliptic curve point addition and doubling. Field sizes of 128-bits and 256-bits are chosen but other field sizes can easily be accommodated, by rapidly reprogramming the FPGA. Overall, the larger the word size of the multiplier, the more efficiently it performs in terms of area/time product. Also, the FIOS algorithm is flexible in that one can tailor the multiplier architecture is to be area efficient, time efficient or a mixture of both by choosing a particular word size. It is estimated that the computation of a 256-bit scalar point multiplication over GF(p) would take about 4.8 ms.
