The new complexes [NEt3H][M(HL)(cod)] (M = Rh 1 or Ir 2; H3L = 2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid, erotic acid; cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) have been prepared by the reaction between [M2Cl2(cod)(2)] and erotic acid in dichloromethane in the presence of Ag2O and NEt3. They crystallise as dichloromethane adducts 1 . CH2Cl2 and 2 . CH2Cl2 from dichloromethane-hexane solutions. These isomorphous structures contain doubly hydrogen-bonded dimers, with additional hydrogen bonding to NEt3H+ cations and bridging CH2Cl2 molecules to form tapes. The use of (NBu4OH)-O-n instead of NEt3 gave the related complex [NBu4n][Rh(HL)(cod)] 1' which has an innocent cation not capable of forming strong hydrogen bonds and in contrast to 1 exists as discrete doubly hydrogen-bonded dimers. Complex 1' cocrystallises with 2,6-diaminopyridine (dap) via complementary triple hydrogen bonds to give [NBu4n][Rh(HL)(cod)]. dap . CH2Cl2 3. Complex 3 exhibits an extended sheet structure of associated [2 + 2] units, with layers of NBu4n, cations separating the sheets. These structural data together with those reported previously for platinum orotate complexes suggest that the steric requirements of the other ligands co-ordinated to the metal are important in influencing their hydrogen-bonding abilities. The solvent of crystallisation, the hydrogen-bonding propensity of the coligand and the nature of the counter ion also determine the type of association in the solid state.

The monoanionic ligand [C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6](-), a potentially terdentate N,C,N bonding system, has been employed to synthesize a series of new ruthenium(II) complexes [Ru{C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6}X(L)] (L = PPh(3) X = Cl (2a), I (2b); L = norbornadiene (nbd), X = Cl (4), eta(1)-OSO2CF3 (5)) and [Ru{C6H3(CH(2)NMe(2))(2)-2,6}(2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine)]Cl (3). X-ray crystal structures of 2b and 3-5 have been determined, in which the N,C,N coordination geometry with respect to the metal center is found to differ considerably. In each complex the aryldiamine ligand is terdentate, eta(3)-N,C,N-bonded as a six electron donor system. However, depending on the other ligands in the Ru(II) coordination sphere, this ligand demonstrates considerable flexibility in adopting coordination geometries which range from meridional in 3 through pseudomeridional in 2b to pseudofacial in 4 and 5. In the structures of 4 and 5 significant distortions of the aryl ring, involving bending of the six-membered ring into a boatlike conformation, are found. The different combinations of the N,C,N ligand with sets of other ligands lead to a range of metal geometries, i.e. square pyramidal in 2b, octahedral in 3, and bicapped tetrahedral in 4 and 5.

A rapid, sensitive reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed for the determination of in vitro release of 17 beta-estradiol and its ester prodrug, 17 beta-estradiol-3-acetate, from silicone intravaginal rings. Partial hydrolysis of the acetate under the aqueous conditions provided by the 1% benzalkonium chloride release medium necessitates its conversion to 17 beta-estradiol prior to HPLC analysis. Both steroid peaks have been fully resolved from the benzalkonium chloride peaks by the reported chromatographic method, which employs a C-18 bonded reversed-phase column, an acetonitrile-water (50:50, v/v) mobile phase and a UV detection wavelength of 281 nm. The peak area versus 17 beta-estradiol concentration was found to be linear over the range of 0.0137-1347 mu g ml(-1) The HPLC method has also been used to determine the silicone solubilities and diffusion coefficients of the two related steroids. The almost 100-fold increase in 17 beta-estradiol-3-acetate release from the silicone core-type intravaginal rings compared to 17 beta-estradiol is shown to be due to a 60-fold increase in silicone solubility and a one and a half-fold increase in diffusitivity. The results demonstrate that an effective estrogen replacement therapy dose of 17 beta-estradiol may be administered from a silicone intravaginal reservoir device containing the labile 17 beta-estradiol-3-acetate prodrug. Oxidation of the macrocyclic Cr(III) complex cis-[Cr(cycb)(OH)(2)](+), where cycb = rac-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, by an excess of the hexacyanoferrate( III) in basic solution, slowly produces Cr(V) species. These species, detected using e.p.r. spectroscopy, are stable under ambient conditions for many hours, and the hyperfine structure of the e.p.r. spectrum is consistent with the interaction of the d-electron with four equivalent nitrogen nuclei. Electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry suggests a concomitant oxidation of the macrocyclic ligand, in which double bonds and double bonded oxygen atoms have been introduced. By comparison basic chromate(III) solutions are oxidized rapidly to chromate(VI) by hexacyanoferrate(III) without any detectable generation of stable Cr(V) intermediates.

This study employs density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine the mechanism by which acetaldehyde is formed on platinum in a typical direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC). A pathway is found involving the formation of a strongly hydrogen-bonded complex between adsorbed ethanol and the surface hydroxyl (OH) species, followed by the facile alpha-dehydrogenation of ethanol, with spontaneous weakening of the hydrogen bond in favor of adsorbed acetaldehyde and water. This mechanism is found to be comparably viable on both the close-packed surface and the monatomic steps. Comparison of further reactions on these two sites strongly indicates that the steps act as net removers of acetaldehyde from the product stream, while the flat surface acts as a net producer.

In a combined experimental and theoretical study on dissociative electron attachment (DEA) to pentafluorotoluene, pentafluoroaniline and pentafluorophenol in the energy range 0-3 eV we reveal the role of rearrangement and hydrogen bonded intermediates in the DEA process and show that HF formation can be used to enable otherwise inaccessible, efficient low energy DEA processes.

The structural and coordination properties of complexes formed upon the interaction of copper(II) and chromium(II) chlorides with diallrylimidazolium chloride (RMlm(+)Cl(-)) ionic liquids and glucose are studied by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In the absence of the carbohydrate substrate, isolated mononuclear four-coordinated MeCl42- species (Me = Cu, Cr) dominate in the ionic liquid solution. The organic part of the ionic liquid does not directly interact with the metal centers. The interactions between the RMlm(+) cations and the anionic metal chloride complexes are limited to hydrogen bonding with the basic Cl- ligands and the overall electrostatic stabilization of the anionic metal complexes. Exchange of Cl ligands by a hydroxyl group of glucose is only favorable for CrCl42-. For Cu2+ complexes, the formation of hydrogen bonded complexes between CuCl42- and glucose is preferred. No preference for the coordination of metal chloride species to specific hydroxyl group of the carbohydrate is found. The formation of binuclear metal chloride complexes is also considered. The reactivity and selectivity patterns of the Lewis acid catalyzed reactions of glucose are discussed in the framework of the obtained results.
