Score following has been an important area of research in AI and music since the mid 80's. Various systems were developed, but they were predominantly for providing automated accompaniment to live concert performances, dealing mostly with issues relating to pitch detection and identification of embellished melodies. They have a big potential in the area of education where student performers benefit in practice situations. Current accompaniment systems are not designed to deal with errors that may occur during practising. In this paper we present a system developed to provide accompaniment for students practising at home. First a survey of score following will be given. Then the capabilities of the system will be explained, and the results from the first experiments of the monophonic score following system will be presented.

Ammonia synthesis on three metal surfaces (Zr, Ru, and Pd) is investigated using density functional theory calculations. In addition to N-2 dissociation, all the transition states of the hydrogenation reactions from N to NH3 are located and the reaction energy profiles at both low and high surface coverages are compared and analyzed. The following are found: (i) Surface coverage effect on dissociation reactions is more significant than that on association reactions. (ii) The difference between N and H chemisorption energies, the so-called chemisorption energy gap which is a measure of adsorption competition, is vital to the reactivity of the catalysts. (iii) The hydrogenation barriers can considerably affect the overall rate of ammonia synthesis. A simple model to describe the relationship between dissociation and association reactions is proposed. Background: The work in this study appraised photodynamic treatment (PDT) as a treatment method for vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) using a novel bioadhesive patch to deliver aminolevulinic acid. An analysis of changes in expression of apoptotic and cell cycle proteins (p53, p21, Mdm2, Blc-2, Bax, Ki-67) in response to PDT was evaluated. Methods: PDT was performed using non-laser light, either as a one or two-cycle treatment, with clinical and pathological assessment following after 6 weeks. Twenty-three patients with 25 VIN lesions underwent 49 cycles of PDT Patches were designed to conform to uneven vulval skin and contained 38 mg cm(-2) aminolevulinic acid. Assessment was carried out at 6 weeks post-treatment. Patient-based treatment assessment, along with clinical and pathological changes, were monitored. Immunohistochemical staining was used to elucidate a possible biomolecular basis for induced cellular changes. Results: Most patients (52%) reported a symptomatic response, with normal pathology restored in 38% of lesions. The patch was easy to apply and remove, causing minimal discomfort. Fluorescence inspection confirmed protoporphyrin accumulation. Pain during implementation of PDT was problematic, necessitating some form of local analgesia. Changes in expression of cell cycle and apoptotic-related proteins suggested involvement of apoptotic pathways. Down regulation of p21 and inverse changes in Bcl-2 and Bax were key findings. Conclusion: Treatment of VIN lesions using a novel bioadhesive patch induced changes in cell cycle and apoptotic proteins in response to PDT with possible utilisation of apoptotic pathways. The efficacy of PDT in treating VIN could be improved by a better understanding of these apoptotic mechanisms, the influence of factors, such as HPV status, and of the need for effective pain management.

It is well known that interference of the human body affects the performance of the antennas in mobile phone handsets. In this contribution, we investigate the use of miniaturized metallodielectric electromagnetic band gap (MEBG) structures embedded in the case of a mobile handset as a means of decoupling the antenna from the user's hand. The closely coupled MEBG concept is employed to achieve miniaturization of the order of 15:1. Full wave dispersion relations for planar closely coupled MEBG arrays are presented and are validated experimentally. The performance of a prototype handset with an embedded conformal MEBG is assessed experimentally and is compared to a similar prototype without the MEBG. Reduction in the detuning of the antenna because of the human hand by virtue of the MEBG is demonstrated. Moreover, the efficiency of the handset when loaded with a human hand model is shown to improve when the MEBG is in place. The improvements are attributed to the decoupling of the antenna from the user's hand, which is achieved by means of suppressing the fields in the locality of the hand.

An efficient modelling technique is proposed for the analysis of a fractal-element electromagnetic band-gap array. The modelling is based on a method of moments modal analysis in conjunction with an interpolation scheme, which significantly accelerates the computations. The plane-wave and the surface-wave responses of the structure have been studied by means of transmission coefficients and dispersion diagrams. The multiband properties and the compactness of the proposed structure are presented. The technique is general and can be applied to arbitrary-shaped element geometries.
