The first enantiopure 4,4'-bipyridyls, 6, 8, and 9 have been prepared in four or five steps via bacterial dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation of 4-chloroquinoline 1 and C-C coupling; ligands 6 and 9 are found to be effective building blocks for the preparation of chiral metal-organic frameworks as demonstrated with the rational synthesis of two pillared-grid structures [Zn-2(fumarate)(2)(L)], which exhibit interesting structural and dynamic aspects.

In this study, we report on a novel, expedited solid-phase approach for the synthesis of biotinylated and fluorescently tagged irreversible affinity based probes for the chymotrypsin and elastase-like serine proteases. The novel solid-phase biotinylation or fluorescent labeling of the aminoalkane diphenyl phosphonate warhead using commercially available Biotin-PEG-NovaTag or EDANS NovaTag resin permits rapid, facile synthesis of these reagents. We demonstrate the kinetic evaluation and utilization of a number of these irreversible inactivators for chymotrypsin-like (chymotrypsin/human cathepsin G) and elastase-like serine proteases. Encouragingly, these compounds display comparable potency against their target proteases as their N-benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz)-protected parent compounds, from which they were derived, and function as efficient active site-directed inactivators of their target proteases. We subsequently applied the biotinylated reagents for the sensitive detection of protease species via Western blot, showing that the inactivation of the protease was specifically mediated through the active site serine. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the successful detection of serine protease species with the fluorescently labeled derivatives “in-gel”, thus avoiding the need for downstream Western blotting. Finally, we also show the utility of biotinylated and pegylated affinity probes for the isolation/enrichment of serine protease species, via capture with immobilized streptavidin, and their subsequent identification via de novo sequencing. Given their selectivity of action against the serine proteases, we believe that these reagents can be exploited for the direct, rapid, and selective identification of these enzymes from biological milieu containing multiple protease subclasses.

Using the semi-empirical embedded-atom method, the structure of small copper clusters on Au(111) surfaces has been investigated both by static and dynamic calculations. By varying the size of roughly circular clusters, the edge energy per atom is obtained; it agrees quite well with estimates based on experimental results. Small three-dimensional clusters tend to have the shape of a pyramid, whose sides are oriented in the directions of small surface energy. The presence of a cluster is found to distort the underlying lattice of adsorbed copper atoms. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The structure and stability of palladium adlayers on Au(hkl) and Pt(hkl) were studied at different coverage degrees by means of Monte Carlo simulations using the interatomic potentials of the embedded atom model. In all cases the Pd films were found to grow epitaxially and pseudomorphically with the crystallographic orientation of the substrate. The differences and similarities of the adlayer with the substrate were analyzed.

The active site in supported gold catalysts for the carbonylation of methanol has been identified as dimers/trimers of gold which are formed from large gold particles >10 nm in diameter. Methyl iodide was found to be critical for this dispersion process and to maintain the catalyst in the active form. This study also shows that it may be possible to redisperse gold catalysts, in general, after reaction.

Heating 2,5-di-O-methanesulfonyl-1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbitol (1) in a range of solvents led to the formation of a gel state at low concentrations. 1 was found to gel aromatics, alcohols and water. The structure of 1 in the solid state was solved by single crystal X-ray crystallography; no strong hydrogen bonds or associated solvents were found in the crystal. Electron micrographs revealed the morphology of the gels to be predominantly rod-like. The ethanol alcogel was used to template silica by sol-gel transcription.

A Ru/SiO2 catalyst was investigated for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of butan-2-one to butan-2-ol with water as a medium. Although excellent reactivity was observed, a gradual deactivation of the catalyst was found on recycle of the catalyst. The spent catalyst was characterized by using XRD, XPS, TEM, TPR, CO chemisorption, FTIR and ICP analyses. Formation of Ru(OH)(x) surface species is proposed to be the main cause of catalyst deactivation with no significant Ru leaching into the reaction mixture. Following catalyst regeneration, up to 85% of the initial catalytic activity could be recovered successfully. Moreover, adsorption of secondary aliphatic alcohols on the catalyst was found to significantly reduce the formation of Ru(OH)(x) during the reaction, thus protecting the catalyst from deactivation.

Ionic liquids have received significant interest from both academia and industry for a wide range of applications which often requires knowledge of their thermophysical properties. Quantitative structure-property relationship correlations and group contribution methods for thermophysical properties of ionic liquids are a basic necessity for the development of computer aided molecular design approaches for these liquids and subsequently offer the potential for designing an ionic liquid having a desirable set of thermophysical properties. However, the limited availability of experimental thermophysical data and their quality have prevented the development of such tools. Based on previously reported experimental surface tension data, a correlation of the parachors with the molar volume of the ionic liquids has been developed. As the range of available ionic liquids increases, methods by which important engineering parameters such as gas solubilities can be estimated from simple structural information become ever more desirable. COSMO-based thermodynamic models, such as that used by COSMOthermX, allow the determination of such data for pure and mixed component systems. Herein, we evaluate the predictive capability of COSMOthermX through a comparison with literature data obtained from the IUPAC database which contains data for 15 gases in 27 ionic liquids, To determine any effect inherent to ionic liquids, gas solubility predictions were first performed for selected molecular solvents at constant temperature and pressure. Further estimations of gas solubility at temperatures ranging from (278 to 368) K at 0.1 MPa in water were performed for 14 gases. The Study has demonstrated that COSMOthermX is capable of predicting, qualitatively, gas solubilities in ionic liquids and, hence, reducing the amount of unnecessary experimental measurements prior to specific applications using ionic liquids.

The cathodic and anodic: potential limit of eleven different ionic liquids were determined at a mercury hemisphere electrode. Ionic liquids containing the phosphonium cation (tri(n-hexyl)tetradecylphosphonium, [P-14.6,P-6.6](+)) give the largest potential window, especially When Coupled to a trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)- [FAP](-). or bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [NTf2](-), anion.

KF, LiF and CsF/A(2)O(3) catalysts with different loadings from 1 to 20 wt% were prepared using aqueous solutions of the alkaline fluoride compounds by wet impregnation of basic mesoporous MSU-type alumina. The catalysts were activated under At at 400 degrees C for 2 h and monitored by in situ XRD measurements. The catalysts were also characterized using several techniques: N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at -196 degrees C, FTIR, DR-UV-vis, CO2-TPD, XRD, Al-27 CP/MAS NMR. These characterizations led to the conclusion that the deposition of alkaline fluorides on the alumina surface generates fluoroaluminates and aluminate species. The process is definitivated at 400 degrees C. The fluorine in these structures is less basic than in the parent fluorides, but the oxygen becomes more basic. The catalysts were tested for the transesterification of fatty esters under different experimental conditions using conventional heating, microwave and Ultrasound irradiation. Recycling experiments showed that these catalysts are stable for a limited number of cycles. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Ionic liquid stabilized gold(III) chloride is shown to be a very active catalyst in the cyclization of sterically hindered and unhindered acetylenic carboxylic acid substrates even in the absence of a base.
