The compression of a finite extent Gaussian laser pulse in collisional plasma is investigated. An analytical model is employed to describe the spatiotemporal evolution of a laser pulse propagating through the plasma medium. The pulse geometry is modeled via an appropriate ansatz which takes into account both beam radius (in space) and pulse width (in time). Compression and self-focusing are taken into account via appropriated group velocity dispersion and nonlinearity terms. The competition among the collisional nonlinearity in the plasma and the effect of divergence due to diffraction is pointed out and investigated numerically. Our results suggest that laser pulse compression and intensity localization is enhanced by plasma collisionality. In specific, a pulse width compression by an order of magnitude approximately is observed, for typical collisional laser plasma parameters, along with a significant increase in the intensity.

We have studied the dynamics of warm dense Li with near-elastic x-ray scattering. Li foils were heated and compressed using shock waves driven by 4-ns-long laser pulses. Separate 1-ns-long laser pulses were used to generate a bright source of 2.96 keV Cl Ly-alpha photons for x-ray scattering, and the spectrum of scattered photons was recorded at a scattering angle of 120 degrees using a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite crystal operated in the von Hamos geometry. A variable delay between the heater and backlighter laser beams measured the scattering time evolution. Comparison with radiation-hydrodynamics simulations shows that the plasma is highly coupled during the first several nanoseconds, then relaxes to a moderate coupling state at later times. Near-elastic scattering amplitudes have been successfully simulated using the screened one-component plasma model. Our main finding is that the near-elastic scattering amplitudes are quite sensitive to the mean ionization state Z and by extension to the choice of ionization model in the radiation-hydrodynamics simulations used to predict plasma properties within the shocked Li.

A simple and efficient synthesis of a novel series of ionic liquids bearing nucleophilic (Me2N) and non-nucleophilic base ((Pr2N)-Pr-i) functionalities is described. The non-nucleophilic base functionality resembles the structure of the Hunig's base (N, N-diisopropylethylamine), which has been used widely in organic synthesis. A qualitative measure of the basicity of these ionic liquids is presented by utilising their interaction with universal indicator. The basicity of these ionic liquids was found to be dependent on the amine tether and choice of linker between the two nitrogen centres. The relative base strength of these ionic liquids was also probed by using them as catalysts in the Heck and Knoevenagel reactions.

The mainline railway track between Dublin and Belfast was constructed during the 1850s, with substantial lengths of railway embankment constructed over soft, peaty soils. In recent years Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) has noticed that the sections of the railway track constructed on these peaty soils have been deteriorating at an increasing rate. Train speeds have been reduced in response to concerns that cyclic track displacements appear to be increasing over time in response to train loading. Track maintenance has also increased significantly. The research described in this paper was undertaken to quantify the response to cyclic train loading of two portions of this track founded on peaty soils. Track displacements were recorded using a sensor system specifically created for this project. The sensor consisted of a photosensitive array, mounted on the sleepers, and a laser, which was targeted onto the photosensitive array from a location outside the area of influence of train loading. Track deflections from 5 to 20 mm were measured under train speeds from near zero to over 120 km/h. The temporal variation in track displacement was used to calibrate an analytical (Winkler) model. This analysis suggests that the deformation of the embankment under train loading was not due to dynamic excitation but rather to static deformation of the poor-quality fill and soft foundation materials. As a consequence, the analytical model highlighted that train speed has limited effect on the magnitude of the deflection of the embankment within NIR operating speeds, but has the potential to significantly reduce the power lost to the damping within the embankment and subgrade.

Recent advances in the study of quantum vibrations and rotations in the fundamental hydrogen molecules are reported. Using the deuterium molecules (D-2(+) and D-2) as exemplars, the application of ultrafast femtosecond pump-probe experiments to study the creation and time-resolved imaging of coherent nuclear wavepackets is discussed. The ability to study the motion of these fundamental molecules in the time-domain is a notable milestone, made possible through the advent of ultrashort intense laser pulses with durations on sub-vibrational (and sub-rotational) timescales. Quantum wavepacket revivals are characterised for both vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom and quantum models are used to provide a detailed discussion of the underlying ultrafast physical dynamics for the specialist and non-specialist alike. The 1980s saw a wave of African films that aimed to represent, on both local and international screens, a sophisticated pre-colonial Africa, thus debunking notions of the continent as primitive. Toward this aim the films inscribed the conventions of oral performance within their visual styles, denying spectator identification with the protagonists and emphasising the presence of the narrator. However, some critics argued that these films exoticised Africa, while their use of oral performance’s distancing effect echoed the ‘scientific’ distance structured by the ethnographic film, in which African societies were represented as ‘the other’. Souleymane Cissé’s Yeelen exemplifies this tension, transposing into cinematic form oral storytelling techniques in the depiction of a power struggle within the covert cult of the komo, a Bambara initiation society unfamiliar to most non-Bambara viewers. This paper demonstrates how the film negotiates this tension via music, which interpellates the international spectator by eliciting a greater identification with the protagonists than that determined at a visual level, while encoding a verisimilitude to rituals that may otherwise be read as the superstitious practices of ‘the other’. In this way, music and image in Yeelen operate as parallel, though often overlapping, discourses, bridging the gap between the film’s culturally specific narrative and formal components, and its international spectators.
