BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term outcome of aqueous shunts in the treatment of infantile glaucoma refractory to conventional treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The records of all patients up to 3 years of age managed with aqueous shunts for uncontrolled glaucoma between November 1990 and November 1996 were retrospectively reviewed. Ten eyes of 6 patients were included in the study. RESULTS: The mean preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was 29.75 ± 4.15 (mm Hg; SD), with none of the eyes on antiglaucoma medication. Postoperatively, the mean IOP was 18.25 ± 5.34 (mm Hg; SD) at a mean follow up of 50 ± 25.6 (SD) months with 7 eyes on topical antiglaucoma medication. At the final follow up, 6 eyes were considered successfully controlled without reintervention, 2 more were controlled after shunt revision, and 2 were considered failures. CONCLUSIONS: Aqueous shunts were relatively effective in this series of infants with recalcitrant glaucoma.

Na-doped Birnessite-type manganese oxide (d-MnO) has been synthesized using the chemical method and characterized through X-ray diffraction and SEM, showing the lamellar structure and high crystal structure. A comparative study of the electrochemical performances of this material with those of the commercial Cryptomelane-type MnO has then been undertaken in ten neutral aqueous electrolytes for supercapacitor applications. Aqueous electrolytes, containing a lithium salt, LiX (where X = SO , NO, CHCO , CHSO, ClO , CHCO, TFSI, Beti, BOB, or Lact), have been first prepared under neutral pH conditions to reach the salt concentration, providing the maximum in conductivity. Their transport properties are then investigated through conductivities, viscosities, and self-diffusion coefficient measurements. Second, the thermal behaviors of these electrolytic aqueous solutions are then evaluated by using a differential scanning calorimeter from (213.15 to 473.15) K in order to access their liquid range temperatures. Cyclic voltammograms (CV) in three electrode configurations are thereafter investigated using Na Birnessite and Cryptomelane as working electrode material from (-0.05 to 1.5) V versus Ag/AgCl at various sweep rates from (2 to 100) mV·s. According to anion nature/structure and manganese oxide material type, different CV responses are observed, presenting a pure capacitive profile for Beti or CH CO and an additional pseudocapacitive signal for the smallest anions, such as ClO and NO . The capacitances, energies, and efficiencies are finally calculated. These results indicate clearly that electrolytes based on a mineral lithium salt under neutral pH condition and high salt concentration (up to 5 mol·L) have better electrochemical performances than organic ones, up to 1.4 V with good material stability and capacity retention. The relationship between transport properties, electrostatic and steric hindrance considerations of hydrated ions, and their electrochemical performances is discussed in order to understand further the lithium intercalation-deintercalation processes in the lamellar or tunnel structure of investigated MnO. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Copper/TEMPO catalysts can be used to prepare nitriles from aldehydes or alcohols using aqueous ammonia. Readily accessible methods were developed that enable standard glassware to be used with air as the source of O2. It was further shown that, at higher temperatures in a pressurised reactor under limiting oxygen conditions (8% O2), catalyst loadings of 1 mol% could be employed.

Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of natural Jordanian zeolite tuff to remove ammonia from aqueous solutions using a laboratory batch method and fixed-bed column apparatus. Equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models.
Design/methodology/approach
– Column experiments were conducted in packed bed column. The used apparatus consisted of a bench-mounted glass column of 2.5 cm inside diameter and 100 cm height (column volume = 490 cm3). The column was packed with a certain amount of zeolite to give the desired bed height. The feeding solution was supplied from a 30 liter plastic container at the beginning of each experiment and fed to the column down-flow through a glass flow meter having a working range of 10-280ml/min.
Findings
– Ammonium ion exchange by natural Jordanian zeolite data were fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Continuous sorption of ammonium ions by natural Jordanian zeolite tuff has proven to be effective in decreasing concentrations ranging from 15-50 mg NH4-N/L down to levels below 1 mg/l. Breakthrough time increased by increasing the bed depth as well as decreasing zeolite particle size, solution flow-rate, initial NH4+ concentration and pH. Sorption of ammonium by the zeolite under the tested conditions gave the sorption capacity of 28 mg NH4-N/L at 20°C, and 32 mg NH4-N/L at 30°C.
Originality/value
– This research investigates the performance of natural Jordanian zeolite tuff to remove ammonia from aqueous solutions using a laboratory batch method and fixed-bed column apparatus. The equilibrium data of the sorption of Ammonia were plotted by using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, then the experimental data were compared to the predictions of the above equilibrium isotherm models. It is clear that the NH4+ ion exchange data fitted better with Langmuir isotherm than with Freundlich model and gave an adequate correlation coefficient value.

The aqueous phase reforming (APR) of xylitol was studied in a continuous fixed bed reactor over three catalysts: Pt/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2. The data obtained in the case of the monometallic Pt catalysts was compared to the bimetallic Pt-Re sample. The effect of Re addition on the catalyst stability, activity, product formation and selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was studied. The bimetallic catalyst demonstrated a higher selectivity to alkanes compared to the monometallic samples. The monometallic catalyst was more selective toward hydrogen formation. A plausible reaction scheme explaining differences in selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was proposed and discussed.

An experimental study on the adsorption of phosphate onto cost effective fine dolomite powder is presented. The effect of solution pH, solution ionic strength and adsorption isotherm were examined. The adsorption of phosphate was pH dependent and phosphate adsorption favoured acidic conditions. The adsorption was significantly influenced by solution ionic strength indicating outer-sphere complexation reactions. The experimental data further indicated that the removal of phosphate increased with increase in the ionic strength of solution. The experimental data were modelled with different isotherms: Langmuir, Freundlich and Redlich–Peterson isotherms. It was found that the Redlich–Peterson isotherm depicted the equilibrium data most accurately. The overall kinetic data fitted very well the pseudo-first-order rate model.

With most recent studies being focused on the development of
advanced chemical adsorbents, this paper investigates the possibility of
using two natural low-cost materials for selective adsorption. Multiadsorbent
systems containing tea waste and dolomite have been tested for
their effectiveness in the removal of copper and methylene blue from
aqueous solutions. The effects of contact time, solution pH and
adsorption isotherms on the sorption behaviour were investigated. The
Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms adequately described the adsorption of
copper ions and methylene blue by both materials in different systems.
The highest adsorption capacities for Cu and MB were calculated as 237.7
at pH 4.5 and 150.44 mg.g‒1 at pH 7 for DO and TW+DO respectively. Tea
waste (TW) and dolomite (DO) were characterized by Fourier transform
infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Energy dispersive
X-ray analysis. The removal of Cu and MB by dolomite was mainly via
surface complexation while physisorption was responsible for most of the
Cu and MB adsorption onto tea waste. Identifying the fundamental mechanisms and behaviour is key to the development of practical multi-adsorbent packed columns.

A series of imprinted polymers targeting nucleoside metabolites, prepared using a template analogue approach, are presented. These were prepared following selection of the optimum functional monomer by solution association studies using 1H-NMR titrations whereby methacrylic acid was shown to be the strongest receptor with and affinity constant of 621 ± 51 L mol-1 vs. 110 ± 16 L mol-1 for acrylamide. The best performing polymers were prepared using methanol as porogenic co-solvent and although average binding site affinities were marginally reduced, 2.3×104 L mol-1 vs. 2.7×104 L mol-1 measured for a polymer prepared in acetonitrile, these polymers contained the highest number of binding sites, 5.27 μmol g-1¬¬ vs. 1.64 μmol g-1, while they also exhibited enhanced selectivity for methylated guanosine derivatives. When applied as sorbents in the extraction of nucleoside derivative cancer biomarkers from synthetic urine samples, significant sample clean-up and recoveries of up to 90% for 7-methylguanosine were achieved.

In an effort to develop a novel electronic paper image display technology based on the electrowetting principle, a 3-D electrowetting cell is designed and fabricated, which consists of two 3-D bent electrodes, each having a horizontal surface made of gold and a vertical surface made of indium tin oxide (ITO) glass as a color display window, a layer of dielectric material on the 3-D electrodes, and a highly fluorinated hydrophobic layer on the surface of the dielectric layer. Results of this work show that an electrowetting-induced motion of an aqueous droplet in immiscible oils can be achieved reversibly across the boundary of the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the 3-D electrode surface. It is also shown that the droplet can maintain its wetting state on a vertical sidewall electrode free of a power supplier when the voltage is removed. This phenomenon may form the basis for color contrast modulation applications, where a power-free image display is required, such as electronic paper display technology in the future. This paper provides an integrated overview of the factors which control gelation in a family of dendritic gelators based on lysine building blocks. In particular, we establish that higher generation systems are more effective gelators, amide linkages in the dendron are better than carbamates, and long alkyl chain surface groups and a carboxylic acid at the focal point enhance gelation. The gels are best formed in relatively low polarity solvents with no hydrogen bond donor ability and limited hydrogen bond acceptor capacity. The dendrons with acid groups at the focal point can form two component gels with diaminododecane, and in this case, it is the lower generation dendrons which can avoid steric hindrance and form more effective gels. The stereochemistry of lysine is crucial in self-assembly, with opposite enantiomers disrupting each other's molecular recognition pathways. For the two-component system, stoichiometry is key, if too much diamine is present, dendron-stabilised microcrystals of the diamine begin to form. Interestingly, gelation still occurs in this case, and the systems with amides/alkyl chains are more effective gels, as a consequence of enhanced dendron-dendron intermolecular interactions allowing the microcrystals to form an interconnected network.
