The design, development and evaluation of an optical fibre pH sensor for monitoring pH in the alkaline region are discussed in detail in this paper. The design of this specific pH sensor is based on the pH induced change in fluorescence intensity of a coumarin imidazole dye which is covalently attached to a polymer network and then fixed to the distal end of an optical fibre. The sensor provides a response over a pH range of 10.0–13.2 with an acceptable response rate of around 50 min, having shown a very good stability over a period of longer than 20 months thus far. The sensor has also demonstrated little cross-sensitivity to ionic strength (IS) and also excellent photostability through a series of laboratory tests. These features make this type of sensor potentially well suited for in situ long term monitoring of pH in concrete structures, to enhance structural monitoring in the civil engineering sector

Traditionally, the optimization of a turbomachinery engine casing for tip clearance has involved either twodimensional transient thermomechanical simulations or three-dimensional mechanical simulations. This paper illustrates that three-dimensional transient whole-engine thermomechanical simulations can be used within tip clearance optimizations and that the efficiency of such optimizations can be improved when a multifidelity surrogate modeling approach is employed. These simulations are employed in conjunction with a rotor suboptimization using surrogate models of rotor-dynamics performance, stress, mass and transient displacements, and an engine parameterization.

Microbial interactions depend on a range of biotic and environmental variables, and are both dynamic and unpredictable. For some purposes, and under defined conditions, it is nevertheless imperative to evaluate the inhibitory efficacy of microbes, such as those with potential as biocontrol agents. We selected six, phylogenetically diverse microbes to determine their ability to inhibit the ascomycete Fusarium
coeruleum, a soil-dwelling pathogen of potato tubers that causes the storage disease dry rot. Interaction assays, where colony development was quantified (for both fungal pathogen and potential control agents), were therefore carried out on solid media. The key parameters that contributed to, and were indicative of, inhibitory efficacy were identified as: fungal growth-rates (i) prior to contact with the biocontrol
agent and (ii) if/once contact with the biocontrol agent was established (i.e. in the zone of mixed
culture), and (iii) the ultimate distance traveled by the fungal mycelium. It was clear that there was no correlation between zones of fungal inhibition and the overall reduction in the extent of fungal colony development. An inhibition coefficient was devised which incorporated the potential contributions of distal inhibition of fungal growth-rate; prevention of mycelium development in the vicinity of the biocontrol
agent; and ability to inhibit plant-pathogen growth-rate in the zone of mixed culture (in a ratio of 2:2:1). The values derived were 84.2 for Bacillus subtilis (QST 713), 74.0 for Bacillus sp. (JC12GB42), 30.7 for Pichia anomala (J121), 19.3 for Pantoea agglomerans (JC12GB34), 13.9 for Pantoea sp. (S09:T:12), and
21.9 (indicating a promotion of fungal growth) for bacterial strain (JC12GB54). This inhibition coefficient, with a theoretical maximum of 100, was consistent with the extent of F. coeruleum-colony development (i.e. area, in cm2) and assays of these biocontrol agents carried out previously against Fusarium
spp., and other fungi. These findings are discussed in relation to the dynamics and inherent complexity of natural ecosystems, and the need to adapt models for use under specific sets of conditions.

This paper addresses the problems of effective in situ measurement of the real-time strain for bridge weigh in motion in reinforced concrete bridge structures through the use of optical fiber sensor systems. By undertaking a series of tests, coupled with dynamic loading, the performance of fiber Bragg grating-based sensor systems with various amplification techniques were investigated. In recent years, structural health monitoring (SHM) systems have been developed to monitor bridge deterioration, to assess load levels and hence extend bridge life and safety. Conventional SHM systems, based on measuring strain, can be used to improve knowledge of the bridge's capacity to resist loads but generally give no information on the causes of any increase in stresses. Therefore, it is necessary to find accurate sensors capable of capturing peak strains under dynamic load and suitable methods for attaching these strain sensors to existing and new bridge structures. Additionally, it is important to ensure accurate strain transfer between concrete and steel, adhesives layer, and strain sensor. The results show the benefits in the use of optical fiber networks under these circumstances and their ability to deliver data when conventional sensors cannot capture accurate strains and/or peak strains.

The search for ideal biomaterials is still on-going for tissue regeneration. In this study, blends of Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) with Poly l-lactic acid (PLLA), Nalidixic Acid (NA) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) were prepared. Mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were investigated by tensile and flexural analysis, DSC, TGA, WXRD, MFI, BET, SEM and hot stage optical microscopy. Results showed that the loading of PLLA caused a significant decrease in tensile strength and almost total eradication of the elongation at break of PCL matrix, especially after PEG and NA addition. Increased stiffness was also noted with additional NA, PEG and PLLA, resulting in an increase in the flexural modulus of the blends.
Isothermal degradation indicated that bulk PCL, PLLA and the blends were thermally stable at 200°C for the duration of 2h making extrusion of the blends at this temperature viable. Morphological study showed that increasing the PLLA content and addition of the very low viscosity PEG and powder NA decreased the Melt Flow Indexer and increased the viscosity.
At the higher temperature the PLLA begins to soften and eventually melts allowing for increased flow and, coupling this with, the natural increase in MFI caused by temperature is enhanced further. The PEG and NA addition increased dramatically the pore volume which is important for cell growth and flow transport of nutrients and metabolic waste.

There have been over 3000 bridge weigh-in-motion (B-WIM) installations in 25 countries worldwide, this has led vast improvements in post processing of B-WIM systems since its introduction in the 1970’s. Existing systems are based on electrical resistance strain gauges which can be prohibitive in achieving data for long term monitoring of rural bridges due to power consumption. This paper introduces a new low-power B-WIM system using fibre optic sensors (FOS). The system consisted of a series of FOS which were attached to the soffit of an existing integral bridge with a single span of 19m. The site selection criteria and full installation process has been detailed in the paper. A method of calibration was adopted using live traffic at the bridge site and based on this calibration the accuracy of the system was determined. New methods of axle detection for B-WIM were investigated and verified in the field.

Introduction: Accumulating evidence supports a role for odontoblasts in initiating tooth pain, however direct ionic mechanisms underlying dentine nociceptive function remain unclear. The transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are directly related to cellular mechanisms of nociception and thermo-sensitive function but their expression by human odontoblasts remains to be determined. Objectives: To investigate the expression and functionality of the thermo-sensitive TRP channels TRPV1, TRPV4, TRPM8 and TRPA1 in human odontoblasts. Methods: Human odontoblasts were derived from dental pulp of immature permanent third molars by explant method. Cell lysates of odontoblasts were subject to SDS- polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and proteins were blotted onto nitrocellulose membranes. Blots were probed with primary antibodies to TRPA1, TRPM8, TRPV4 and TRPV1. Detection of bound primary antibodies was achieved using appropriate anti-species antibody conjugates and chemiluminescent substrates. Functionality of the channels was determined with Ca2+ microfluorimetry, where cells grown in cover slips and incubated with Fura 2AM prior to stimulation with capsaicin (TRPV1 agonist), 4 alpha-phorbol 12,13-didecanoate (4áPDD) (TRPV4 agonist), icilin (TRPA1 agonist) and menthol (TRPM8 agonist). Emitted fluorescence was measured and the fluorescence ratio (R) was calculated as F340/F380 to determine the level of [Ca2+]i. Results: Western blotting confirmed the molecular localisation of thermo-sensitive TRP channels in human odontoblasts. Functionality assays revealed increase in [Ca2+]i in response to capsacin, icillin, methanol and 4áPDD indicating functional expression of TRPV1, TRPA1, TRPM8 and TRPV4 respectively. Conclusions: Functional expression of thermo-sensitive TRP channels in human odontoblasts may indicate a crucial role for odontoblasts in thermally induced dental pain. Social networks generally display a positively skewed degree distribution and higher values for clustering coefficient and degree assortativity than would be expected from the degree sequence. For some types of simulation studies, these properties need to be varied in the artificial networks over which simulations are to be conducted. Various algorithms to generate networks have been described in the literature but their ability to control all three of these network properties is limited. We introduce a spatially constructed algorithm that generates networks with constrained but arbitrary degree distribution, clustering coefficient and assortativity. Both a general approach and specific implementation are presented. The specific implementation is validated and used to generate networks with a constrained but broad range of property values. © Copyright JASSS.
