The aim of this study was to develop an input/output mass balance to predict phosphorus retention in a five pond constructed wetland system (CWS) at Greenmount Farm, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The mass balance was created using 14-months of flow data collected at inflow and outflow points on a weekly basis. Balance outputs were correlated with meteorological parameters, such as daily air temperature and hydrological flow, recorded daily onsite. The mass balance showed that phosphorus retention within the system exceeded phosphorus release, illustrating the success of constructed wetland systems to remove nutrients from agricultural effluent from a dairy farm. Pond 5 showed the greatest relative retention of 86%. Comparison of retention and mean air temperature highlighted a striking difference in trends between up-gradient and down-gradient ponds, with Ponds 1 and 2 displaying a positive quadratic relationship and ponds 3 through 5 displaying a negative quadratic relationship.

In the past few years, the development of light sources of the 4(th) generation, namely XUV/X-ray Free Electron Lasers provides to the scientific community outstanding tools to investigate matter under extreme conditions never obtained in laboratories so far. As theory is at its infancy, the analysis of matter via the self-emission of the target is of central importance. The characterization of such dense matter is possible if photons can escape the medium. As the absorption of K-shell X-ray transitions is minimal, it plays a key role in this study. We report here the first successful observation of K-shell emission of Nitrogen at 430 eV using an XUV-Free Electron Laser to irradiate solid Boron Nitride targets under exceptional conditions: photon energy of 92 eV, pulse duration of similar to 20 fs, micro focusing leading to intensities larger than 10(16) W/cm(2). Using a Bragg crystal of THM coupled to a CCD, we resolved K-shell line emission from different charge states. We demonstrate that the spectroscopic data allow characterization of electron heating processes when X-ray radiation is interacting with solid matter. As energy transport is non-trivial because the light source is monochromatic, these results have an important impact on the theory. (C) 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

The use of ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes promises to improve the energy density of electrochemical capacitors (ECs) by allowing for operation at higher voltages. Several studies have also shown that the pore size distribution of materials used to produce electrodes is an important factor in determining EC performance. In this research the capacitative, energy and power performance of ILs 1-ethyl-3- methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF4), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMImN(CN)2), 1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (DMPImTFSI), and 1-butyl-3-methylpyrrolidinium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate (BMPyT(F5Et)PF3) were studied and compared with the commercially utilised organic electrolyte 1M tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate solution in anhydrous propylene carbonate (Et4NBF4–PC 1 M). To assess the effect of pore size on IL performance, controlled porosity carbons were produced from phenolic resins activated in CO2. The carbon samples were characterised by nitrogen adsorption– desorption at 77 K and the relevant electrochemical behaviour was characterised by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The best capacitance performance was obtained for the activated carbon xerogel with average pore diameter 3.5 nm, whereas the optimum rate performance was obtained for the activated carbon xerogel with average pore diameter 6 nm. When combined in an EC with IL electrolyte EMImBF4 a specific capacitance of 210 F g1 was obtained for activated carbon sample with average pore diameter 3.5 nm at an operating voltage of 3 V. The activated carbon sample with average pore diameter 6 nm allowed for maximum capacitance retention of approximately 70% at 64 mA cm2.

In this study, the feasibility of using H3PO4-activated lignin for hexavalent chromium adsorption has been investigated. The composite of activated lignin was characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM with EDAX analysis. It was observed that the pH had a strong effect on the adsorption capacity; adsorption of Cr(VI) was more favorable at acidic pH with maximum uptake at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Koble-Corrigan isotherm. The monolayer sorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 77.85 mg/g. Adsorption showed pseudo-second order rate kinetics and the process involving the rate-controlling step is complex as it involves both film and intraparticle diffusion processes. The NaOH desorbing agent was able to release approximately 84% of metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. The overall Cr(VI) retention on the activated lignin surface perhaps includes both the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Enantiopure arene cis-tetrahydrodiols of bromobenzene and iodobenzene have been obtained in good yields, from chemoselective hydrogenation (rhodium-graphite) of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites. Palladium-catalysed substitution of the halogen, by hydrogen, boron, nitrogen and phosphorus nucleophiles, in the acetonide derivatives, has yielded highly functionalised products for application in synthesis with potential as scaffolds for chiral ligands.
