Flexible luminescent polymer films were obtained by doping europium(III) complexes in blends of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and the ionic liquid 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(6)mim][Tf2N]. Different europium(III) complexes have been incorporated in the polymer/ionic liquid matrix: [C(6)mim][Eu(nta)(4)], [C(6)mim][Eu(tta)(4)], [Eu(tta)(3)(phen)] and [choline](3)[Eu(dpa)(3)], where nta is 2-naphthoyltrifluoroacetonate, tta is 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate, phen is 1,10-phenanthroline, dpa is 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate ( dipicolinate) and choline is the 2-hydroxyethyltrimethyl ammonium cation. Bright red photoluminescence was observed for all the films upon irradiation with ultraviolet radiation. The luminescent films have been investigated by high-resolution steady-state luminescence spectroscopy and by time-resolved measurements. The polymer films doped with beta-diketonate complexes are characterized by a very intense D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition ( up to 15 times more intense than the D-5(0) -> F-7(1)) transition, whereas a marked feature of the PMMA films doped with [choline](3)[Eu(dpa)(3)] is the long lifetime of the D-5(0) excited state (1.8 ms).

We have observed the simultaneous inner-shell absorption of two extreme-ultraviolet photons by a Xe atom in an experiment performed at the short-wavelength free electron laser facility FLASH. Photoelectron spectroscopy permitted us to unambiguously identify a feature resulting from the ionization of a single electron of the 4d subshell of Xe by two photons each of energy (93 +/- similar to 1) eV. The feature's intensity has a quadratic dependence on the pulse energy. The results are discussed and interpreted within the framework of recent results of ion spectroscopy experiments of Xe obtained at ultrahigh irradiance in the extreme-ultraviolet regime.

Environmental (222)radon exposure is a human health concern, and many studies demonstrate that very low doses of high LET alpha-particle irradiation initiate deleterious genetic consequences in both radiated and non-irradiated bystander cells. One consequence, radiation-induced genomic instability (RIGI), is a hallmark of tumorigenesis and is often assessed by measuring delayed chromosomal aberrations We utilised a technique that facilitates transient immobilization of primary lymphocytes for targeted microbeam irradiation and have reported that environmentally relevant doses, e.g. a single He-3(2+) particle traversal to a single cell, are sufficient to Induce RIGI Herein we sought to determine differences in radiation response in lymphocytes isolated from five healthy male donors Primary lymphocytes were irradiated with a single particle per cell nucleus. We found evidence for inter-individual variation in radiation response (Rid, measured as delayed chromosome aberrations) Although this was not highly significant, it was possibly masked by high levels of intra-individual variation While there are many studies showing a link between genetic predisposition and RIGI, there are few studies linking genetic background with bystander effects in normal human lymphocytes In an attempt to investigate inter-individual variation in the induction of bystander effects, primary lymphocytes were irradiated with a single particle under conditions where fractions of the population were traversed We showed a marked genotype-dependent bystander response in one donor after exposure to 15% of the population The findings may also be regarded as a radiation-induced genotype-dependent bystander effect triggering an instability phenotype (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Predicable and controlled degradation is not only central to the accurate delivery of bioactive agents and drugs, it also plays a vital role in key aspects of bone tissue engineering. The work addressed in this paper investigates the utilisation of e-beam irradiation in order to achieve a controlled (surface) degradation profile. This study focuses on the modification of commercially and clinically relevant materials, namely poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), poly(L-lactide-hydroxyapatite) (PLLA-HA), poly(L-lactide-glycolide) co-polymer (PLG) and poly(L-lactide-DL-lactide) co-polymer (PLDL). Samples were subjected to irradiation treatments using a 0.5 MeV electron beam with delivered surface doses of 150 and 500 kGy. In addition, an acrylic attenuation shield was used for selected samples to control the penetration of the e-beam. E-beam irradiation induced chain scission in all polymers, as characterized by reduced molecular weights and glass transition temperatures (T-g). Irradiation not only produced changes in the physical properties of the polymers but also had associated effects on surface erosion of the materials during hydrolytic degradation. Moreover, the extent to which both mechanical and hydrolytic degradation was observed is synonymous with the estimated penetration of the beam (as controlled by the employment of an attenuation shield). A superlens based on a single aluminum layer operating at deep ultraviolet UV wavelengths is investigated both, theoretically and experimentally. Using a wavelength of 157 nm double slits with a center-to-center separation of only 70 nm were experimentally resolved and simulations indicate a possible resolution down to 29 nm with experimentally feasible arrangements. The results demonstrate the significance of aluminum as plasmonic material for the deep UV.
