Microscopic simulation models are often evaluated based on visual inspection of the results. This paper presents formal econometric techniques to compare microscopic simulation (MS) models with real-life data. A related result is a methodology to compare different MS models with each other. For this purpose, possible parameters of interest, such as mean returns, or autocorrelation patterns, are classified and characterized. For each class of characteristics, the appropriate techniques are presented. We illustrate the methodology by comparing the MS model developed by He and Li [J. Econ. Dynam. Control, 2007, 31, 3396-3426, Quant. Finance, 2008, 8, 59-79] with actual data.

To increase the structural efficiency of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels, it is plausible to introduce plate sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus panel static strength performance. Reported herein is the experimental validation of prismatic sub-stiffening, and the computational verification of such concepts within larger recurring structure. The experimental work demonstrates the potential to 'control' plate buckling modes. For the tested sub-stiffening design, an initial plate buckling performance gain of +89% over an equivalent mass design was measured. The numerical simulations, modelling the tested sub-stiffening design, demonstrate equivalent behaviour and performance gains (+66%) within larger structures consisting of recurring panels. We employ a quantum mechanical bond order potential in an atomistic simulation of channeled flow. We show that the original hypothesis that this is achieved by a cooperative deployment of slip and twinning is correct, first because a twin is able to “protect” a 60° ordinary dislocation from becoming sessile, and second because the two processes are found to be activated by Peierls stresses of similar magnitude. In addition we show an explicit demonstration of the lateral growth of a twin, again at a similar level of stress. Thus these simultaneous processes are shown to be capable of channeling deformation into the observed state of plane strain in so-called “A”-oriented mechanical testing of titanium aluminide superalloy.

This study aimed to determine the effect of sub-lethal challenge with Photodynamic Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (PACT) on the susceptibility of clinical Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to both PACT and a range of antibiotics used in the treatment of infection caused by these bacteria. Clinical S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolates were exposed to sub-lethal PACT with meso-tetra (N-methyl-4-pyridyl) porphine tetra tosylate (TMP) and methylene blue (MB) over a 72 h period. After exposure, susceptibility of surviving organisms to a range of antibiotics was determined and compared with the susceptibility of an untreated control. Surviving bacteria were also exposed to previously lethal photosensitizer-light combinations, to determine if susceptibility to PACT was affected by sub-lethal exposure. Exposure to sub-lethal PACT did not decrease susceptibility to antibiotics with the minimum inhibitory concentrations for 95% and 100% of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus isolates, respectively, within two doubling dilutions of the MIC of the untreated control. Similarly, habituation with sub-lethal PACT did not reduce susceptibility of P. aeruginosa isolates to PACT levels previously determined as lethal. A reduction in susceptibility to PACT following habituation was apparent for two S. aureus isolates with MB and for 1 S. aureus isolate with IMP. However, for two of these three isolates, the log reduction for habituated cells was still greater than 4 log(10). PACT remains an attractive potential treatment for infection caused by these bacteria. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Previous work has demonstrated the potential to introduce plate element sub-stiffening to increase the local stability and thus static strength performance of integrally machined aluminium alloy stiffened panels. The introduction of plate element prismatic sub-stiffening modifies local plate buckling behaviour and within realistic design constraints, may produce sizable performance gains with equivalent mass designs. This article examines through experimental and computational analysis the potential of non-prismatic sub-stiffening for tailoring local plate stability performance. Using non-prismatic sub-stiffening, the experimental work demonstrates potential initial buckling performance gains with equivalent mass designs (+185%), and computationally, potential mass savings with equivalent static strength performance designs (-9.4%). The use of a water-soluble, thermo-responsive polymer as a highly sensitive fluorescence-lifetime probe of microfluidic temperature is demonstrated. The fluorescence lifetime of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) labelled with a benzofurazan fluorophore is shown to have a steep dependence on temperature around the polymer phase transition and the photophysical origin of this response is established. The use of this unusual fluorescent probe in conjunction with fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) enables the spatial variation of temperature in a microfluidic device to be mapped, on the micron scale, with a resolution of less than 0.1 degrees C. This represents an increase in temperature resolution of an order of magnitude over that achieved previously by FLIM of temperature-sensitive dyes
