A new peat-based sorbent was evaluated for the capture of heavy metals from waste streams. The media is a pelletted blend of organic humic material targeted for the capture of soluble metals from industrial waste streams and stormwater. The metals chosen for the media evaluation were Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn due to their occurrence and abundance in waste streams and runoff. Sorption tests included an evaluation of the rate and extent of metals capture by the media, single versus multicomponent metals uptake, pH, anion influence, leaching effects and the effect of media moisture content on uptake rate and capacity. Isotherms of the sorption results showed that the presence of multiple metals increased the total sorption capacity of the media compared to the single component metal capacity; a result of site selectivity within the media. However the capacity for an individual metal in a multicomponent metal matrix was reduced compared to its single component capacity, due to competition for sites. Evidence of ion exchange behavior was observed but did not account for all metals capture. The media also provided a buffering action to counter the pH drop typically associated with metals capture.

The activity and nature (i e heterogeneous and/or homogeneous) of catalysts based on CsF supported on alpha-Al2O3 were investigated for the transesterification of vegetable oil with methanol. The effect of the activation temperature, CsF loading and the reusability in a recirculating reactor were first studied CsF/alpha-Al2O3 exhibited the highest activity for a CsF loading of 0 6 mmol/g and when activated at 120 degrees C An important aspect of this study is the effect of CsF leaching into the reaction mixture, which is attributed to the high solubility of CsF in methanol, leading to a complete loss of activity after one run It was Identified that the activity of the catalyst resulted from a synergy between alumina and dissolved CsF, the presence of both compounds being absolutely necessary to observe any conversion The use of an alumina with a higher surface area resulted in a far greater reaction rate, showing that the concentration of surface site on the oxide (probably surface hydroxyl) was rate-limiting in the case of the experiments using the low surface area alpha-Al2O3 This work emphasizes that combined homogeneous-heterogeneous catalytic systems made from the blending of the respective catalysts can be used to obtain high conversion of vegetable oil to biodiesel. Despite the homogeneous/heterogeneous dual character, such a catalytic system may prove valuable in developing a simple and cost-effective continuous catalytic process for biodiesel production (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Extracts from the Ginkgo biloba tree are widely used as herbal medicines, and include bilobalide (BB) and ginkgolides A and B (GA and GB). Here we examine their effects on human 5-HT(3)A and 5-HT(3)AB receptors, and compare these to the effects of the structurally related compounds picrotin (PTN) and picrotoxinin (PXN), the two components of picrotoxin (PTX), a known channel blocker of 5-HT3, nACh and GABA(A) receptors. The compounds inhibited 5-HT-induced responses of 5-HT3 receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes, with IC50 values of 470 mu M (BB), 730 mu M (GB), 470 mu M (PTN), 11 mu M (PXN) and > 1 mM (GA) in 5-HT(3)A receptors, and 3.1 mM (BB), 3.9 mM (GB), 2.7 mM (PTN), 62 mu M (PXN) and > 1 mM (GA) in 5-HT(3)AB receptors. Radioligand binding on receptors expressed in HEK 293 cells showed none of the compounds displaced the specific 5-HT3 receptor antagonist [H-3]granisetron, confirming that they do not act at the agonist binding site. Inhibition by GB at 5-HT(3)A receptors is weakly use-dependent, and recovery is activity dependent, indicating channel block. To further probe their site of action at 5-HT(3)A receptors, BB and GB were applied alone or in combination with PXN, and the results fitted to a mathematical model; the data revealed partially overlapping sites of action. We conclude that BB and GB block the channel of the 5-HT(3)A receptor. Thus these compounds have comparable, although less potent, behaviour than at some other Cys-loop receptors, demonstrating their actions are conserved across the family. Ta2O5-SiO2 catalysts were prepared by a sol-gel method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and tantalum (V) ethoxide as the sources of silicon and tantalum, and two families of quaternary ammonium salts, [CnH(2n+1)(CH3)(3)N]Br (n = 14, 16, 18) and [(CnH(2n+1))(4)N]Br (n = 10, 12, 16, 18) as surfactants. The catalysts were compared for the selective suffoxidation of 4,6-dimethyl-2-thiomethylpyrimidine using peroxide as an oxidising agent in a range of ionic liquids and organic solvents. The sol-gel catalysts were also compared with tantalum on MCM-41 prepared by grafting. The catalysts were characterized from adsorption-desorption isotherms of N-2, XRD patterns, small-angle X-ray scattering, IR spectra from adsorbed pyridine and CDCl3, XPS spectra, and Si-29 magic angle spinning (MAS) NNIR experiments. The effect of recycling on the catalyst leaching and selectivity/activity was also studied. High activities and selectivities were found in [NTf2](-) based ionic liquids and organic solvents with good recyclability of the catalyst. Tantalum was found in the solution after reaction; however, this was determined to be due to entrapment of catalyst particulates, as opposed to leaching of the active metal. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. Silver colloids have been prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution and embeded in alumina following a sol-gel procedure in the presence of Pluronic 84 ((EO)(19)(PO)(39)(EO)(19)), as surfactant. Plasma-catalytic experiments aimed at the mineralization of toluene showed that the selectivity to CO2 was significantly increased in the presence of Ag catalysts compared with results obtained using the plasma alone. In-situ studies of the ozone interaction with catalysts provide an insight into the nature of the active sites of supported silver colloids for mineralization reactions. It is noticeable that when ozone is chemisorbed on embedded Ag colloidal catalysts no change in the silver oxidation state or size is found. The population of the chemisorbed species is higher at lower temperatures, where the non-selective decomposition of ozone is smaller. The catalysts exhibit high stability, preserving the structural and textural properties after the catalytic tests, that is indeed very important in the presence of ozone. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts have been characterized in-depth during different thermo-chemical treatments by in situ diffuse reflectance UV-visible spectroscopy and quasi in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy. The combination of these techniques indicates that sintering and redispersion of silver is clearly observed from the increases and decreases in the absorption band intensity over the range of 250-600 nm due to the presence of silver clusters and silver nanoparticles. These results allow us to study the effect of the reaction feed on the metal dispersion at different operation conditions and discuss the formation of active sites during the selective catalytic reduction of O-2 with excess H-2 in the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons. In this case high catalytic activity and selectivity toward the oxygen removal was achieved for this catalyst. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), Thionine (TH) and Basic Fuschin (BF), but not anionic dyes, such as Acid Orange 7 (AO7), Acid Blue 9 (AB9) and Acid Fuschin (AF), are readily adsorbed onto mesoporous titania films at high pH (pH 11), i.e. well above the pzc of titania (pH 6.5), due to electrostatic forces of attraction and repulsion, respectively. The same anionic dyes, but not the cationic dyes, are readily adsorbed on the same titania films at low pH (pH 3), i.e. well below titania's pzc. MB appears to adsorb on mesoporous titania films at pH 11 as the trimer (lambda(max) = 570 nm) but, upon drying, although the trimer still dominates, there is an absorption peak at 665 nm, especially notable at low [MB], which may be due to the monomer, but more likely MB J-aggregates. In contrast, the absorption spectrum of AO7 adsorbed onto the mesoporous titania film at low pH is very similar to the dye monomer. For both MB and AO7 the kinetics of adsorption are first order and yield high rate constants (3.71 and 1.481 g(-1) min(-1)), indicative of a strong adsorption process. Indeed, both MB and AO7 stained films retained much of their colour when left overnight in dye-free pH 11 and 3 solutions, respectively, indicating the strong nature of the adsorption. The kinetics of the photocatalytic bleaching of the MB-titania films at high pH are complex and not well-described by the Julson-Ollis kinetic model [A.J. Julson, D.F. Ollis, Appl. Catal. B. 65 (2006) 315]. Instead, there appears to be an initial fast but not simple demethylation step, followed by a zero-order bleaching and further demethylation steps. In contrast, the kinetics of photocatalytic bleaching of the AO7-titania film give a good fit to the Julson-Ollis kinetic model, yielding values for the various fitting parameters not too dissimilar to those reported for AO7 adsorbed on P25 titania powder. The kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) on Au/TiO2 and Pt-Sn/TiO2 thin films was studied in the temperature range 313-353 K and citral concentrations of 0.25-10.0 mol m(-3). The thin films were deposited onto the inner walls of silica capillaries with internal diameter of 250 mu m. First-order dependence on hydrogen pressure and near zero order dependence on citral concentration were observed for the initial rate of citral hydrogenation over the Pt-Sn/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 thin films. The Au/TiO2 catalyst prevents citronellal formation. The highest yield of unsaturated alcohols was obtained on the Pt-Sn/TiO2 film at a reaction temperature of 343 K, liquid residence time of 30 min and a citral conversion of 99%. Bathyal and abyssal epibenthic holothurians have a layer of bacteria lying over the tentacular epidermis and below the cuticle. Thus the tentacles of deep-sea holothurians may provide ideal conditions for subcuticular bacteria. These bacteria appear to be regulated by phagocytosis, which, together with pinocytosis would facilitate transfer of bacterial metabolites to the holothurian. Their abundance suggests a previously unknown pathway for energy transformation and assimilation of particular significance in an environment where food is limiting.

Lysozyme is a naturally occurring enzyme in egg white and has high commercial importance due to its antimicrobial properties. The main objective of this work was to study the growth rate of lysozyme crystals isolated from egg for the first 72 hours and verify the results with McCabe’s constant crystal growth theory. Hanging drop crystallization method was used to form high purity lysozyme crystals from the embryonic stage. To this end, this work differs from an earlier work of Forsythe et al., who used seed crystals in the size range of 10 µm - 40 µm for face growth measurements at different pH values. The maximum crystal size recorded in the present work was 392.86 µm, which is within the typical size range of 50 µm - 500 µm for which constant crystal growth is expected to hold according to McCabe’s ?L law. Electron micrographs (SEM) revealed the structure and dimensions of the crystals while SDS-Page was used to measure the purity of the crystals. The SEM results showed that that lysozyme growth rate was linear and agreed with McCabe’s constant growth theory, producing a growth rate of 1.77 x 10-3 µm .s-1

The natural zeolite obtained from the Sivas-Yavu region in Turkey and iron modified forms were studied for the decomposition of N2O and selective catalytic reduction of N2O with NH3. The natural and iron modified zeolites were characterised by XRD, SEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD and low temperature nitrogen sorption. The effect iron loading, precursor and valency on the catalytic performance of catalysts were studied. The catalytic activity of the zeolites increased up to about 7.0 wt.% Fe. Above this value, the activity decreased as a result of a reduction in the surface area and pore volume of the zeolite. The highest catalytic activity was observed using catalysts prepared with FeCl2 due to the formation of more reducible iron species in the zeolites. When FeSO4 was used as the iron precursor, sulphate remained on the surface even after extensive washing resulting in a decrease in the N2O decomposition activity and a shift the N2O reduction temperature to higher values. Since the natural and iron exchanged natural zeolites prepared using FeCl2 have comparable activity with synthetic zeolites, the offer a promising alternative catalyst for the abatement of N2O, particularly for the selective reduction of N2O with NH3.
