The adsorption behavior of C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Red 4, and C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 from aqueous solution onto activated carbon was investigated under various experimental conditions. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon for reactive dyes was found to be relatively high. At pH 7.0 and 298 K, the maximum adsorption capacity for C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 and C.I. Reactive Red 4 dyes was found to be 0.27, 0.24, and 0.11 mmol/g, respectively. The shape of the adsorption isotherms indicated an L2-type isotherm according to the Giles and Smith classification. The experimental adsorption data showed good correlation with the Langmuir and Ferundlich isotherm models. Further analysis indicated that the formation of a complete monolayer was not achieved, with the fraction of surface coverage found to be 0.45, 0.42, and 0.22 for C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 and C.I. Reactive Red 4 dyes, respectively. Experimental data indicated that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for the dyes was higher in acidic rather than in basic solutions, and further indicated that the removal of dye increased with increase in the ionic strength of solution, this was attributed to aggregation of reactive dyes in solution. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of reactive dyes onto activated carbon was an endothermic process. The adsorption enthalpy (?H) for C.I. Reactive Blue 2 and C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 dyes were calculated at 42.2 and 36.2 kJ/mol, respectively. The negative values of free energy (?G) determined for these systems indicated that adsorption of reactive dyes was spontaneous at the temperatures under investigation (298-328 K). © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. This work involved the treatment of industrial waste water from a nylon carpet printing plant. As dyeing of nylon is particularly difficult, acid dyes, fixing agents, thickeners, finishing agents, are required for successful colouration and cause major problems with the plant's effluent disposal in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD). Granular activated carbon (GAC) Filtrasorb 400 was used to treat a simulated process plant effluent containing all the pollutants. Equilibrium isotherm experiments were established and experimental data obtained showed good empirical correlation with Langmuir isotherm theory. Column experimental data, in terms of COD were correlated using the bed depth service time (BDST) model. Solid phase loading in the columns were found to approach that in equilibrium studies indicating an efficient use of adsorbent. The results from the BDST model were then used to design a pilot adsorption rig at the plant. The performance of the pilot plant column were accurately predicted by scale-up from the bench scale columns. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. All rights reserved.

The removal of acid dyes, Tectilon Blue 4R, Tectilon Red 2B and Tectilon Orange 3G, from single solute, bisolute and trisolute solutions by adsorption on activated carbon (GAC F400) has been investigated in isotherm experiments. Results from these experiments were modelled using the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm theories with the Langmuir model proving to be the more suitable. The Ideal Adsorbed Solution (IAS) model was coupled with the Langmuir isotherm to predict binary adsorption on the dyes. The application of the IAS theory accurately simulated the experimental data with an average deviation of approximately 3% between modelled and experimental data.

BACKGROUND:
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasingly prevalent but the inpatient costs associated with this condition are poorly defined due to limitations with data extraction and failure to differentiate between hospitalisation for renal and non-renal disease reasons. The impact of admissions primarily for the management of ESRD on hospital bed utilisation was assessed over a 5-year period in a large teaching hospital.
METHODS:
All admission episodes were reviewed and the ESRD group was identified by a primary International Classification of Diseases code for ESRD or a non-specific primary renal failure code with a secondary code for ESRD. The frequency and duration of hospitalisation and contribution to bed day occupancy of this group with ESRD was determined.
RESULTS:
There were 70,808 patients responsible for a total of 116,915 admissions and 919,212 bed days over the study period. Of these, 988 (1.4%) patients were admitted for the management of ESRD, accounting for 2,387 (2.0%) of admissions and utilisation of 23,011 (2.5%) bed days. After adjustment for age and gender, those admitted for ESRD management were significantly more likely to have a prolonged admission exceeding 30 days (odds ratio 1.46, 95% confidence interval 1.23-1.72, p < 0.001). When the admission was an emergency rather than an elective event, the patient was 4.6 times more likely to be hospitalised for over 30 days.
CONCLUSIONS:
Persons admitted for ESRD management are hospitalised more frequently and for longer than the overall inpatient population, occupying a substantial number of bed days.

A potential usefulness of raw date pits as an inexpensive solid adsorbent for methylene blue (MB), copper ion (Cu2+), and cadmium ion (Cd2+) has been demonstrated in this work. This work was conducted to provide fundamental information from the study of equilibrium adsorption isotherms and to investigate the adsorption mechanisms in the adsorption of MB, Cu2+, and Cd2+ onto raw date pits. The fit of two models, namely Langmuir and Freundlich models, to experimental data obtained from the adsorption isotherms was checked. The adsorption capacities of the raw date pits towards MB and both Cu2+ and Cd2+ ions obtained from Langmuir and Freundlich models were found to be 277.8, 35.9, and 39.5 mg g(-1), respectively. Surface functional groups on the raw date pits surface substantially influence the adsorption characteristics of MB, Cu2+, and Cd2+ onto the raw date pits. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies show clear differences in both absorbances and shapes of the bands and in their locations before and after solute adsorption. Two mechanisms were observed for MB adsorption, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction, while other mechanisms were observed for Cu2+ and Cd2+. For Cu2+, binding two cellulose/lignin units together is the predominant mechanism. For Cd2+. the predominant mechanism is by binding itself using two hydroxyl groups in the cellulose/lignin unit. A recently exposed inter-tidal peat bed at Ballywoolen, Bann estuary, Co. Londonderry, has yielded new information about mid-Holocene coastal environmental change in the northeast of Ireland. Pollen analytical data and wood detritus demonstrate that peat accumulation occurred in a terrestrial environment that was free from marine influence. Radiocarbon dates suggest that the peat accumulated rapidly during a period of low relative sea level subsequent to the maximum of Holocene relative sea-level rise along the north coast of Northern Ireland. The absence of marine/brackish indicator taxa at the site suggests that the tidal range was somewhat less than that at present and/or that the channel of the river was located some distance east of its present alignment. The dates indicate that the low stand lasted for at least ~0.2 ka and possibly for ~1.1 ka. Stable, woodland-dominated landscapes are indicated at both this site and neighbouring ones around ~6.4-5.3 cal ka BP. There is no evidence for large-scale aeolian sand movement or human impact on the landscape during the period of peat accumulation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of antimicrobial drug use, gastric acid-suppressive agent use, and infection control practices on the incidence of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) in a 426-bed general teaching hospital in Northern Ireland. The study was retrospective and ecological in design. A multivariate autoregressive integrated moving average (time-series analysis) model was built to relate CDAD incidence with antibiotic use, gastric acid-suppressive agent use, and infection control practices within the hospital over a 5-year period (February 2002 to March 2007). The findings of this study showed that temporal variation in CDAD incidence followed temporal variations in expanded-spectrum cephalosporin use (average delay = 2 months; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.01/100 bed-days), broad-spectrum cephalosporin use (average delay = 2 months; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.02/100 bed-days), fluoroquinolone use (average delay = 3 months; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.004/100 bed-days), amoxicillin-clavulanic acid use (average delay = 1 month; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.002/100 bed-days), and macrolide use (average delay = 5 months; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.002/100 bed-days). Temporal relationships were also observed between CDAD incidence and use of histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs; average delay = 1 month; variation of CDAD incidence = 0.001/100 bed-days). The model explained 78% of the variance in the monthly incidence of CDAD. The findings of this study highlight a temporal relationship between certain classes of antibiotics, H2RAs, and CDAD incidence. The results of this research can help hospitals to set priorities for restricting the use of specific antibiotic classes, based on the size-effect of each class and the delay necessary to observe an effect.

The possible use of wood ash as an adsorbent of nickel sulphate from dilute solutions and the effect of operating parameters were investigated in this study. The rate constants of adsorption were determined at different concentrations and temperatures. The applicability of the first-order reversible equation and an empirical kinetic model were tested to understand the kinetics of nickel sulphate removal at different concentrations. Pore diffusion was found as the rate-controlling step. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were applied to find out the adsorption parameters. The activation energy of adsorption was -11.54 kJ mol-1. The value of the enthalpy change was ?H=-10.35 kcal mol-1.

The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. This article describes an approach for quantifying microsphere deposition onto iron-oxide-coated sand under the influence of adsorbed Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA). The experimental technique involved a triple pulse injection of model latex microspheres (microspheres) in pulses of (1) microspheres, followed by (2) SRHA, and then (3) microspheres, into a column filled with iron-coated quartz sand as a water-saturated porous medium. A random sequential adsorption model (RSA) simulated the gradual rise in the first (microsphere) breakthrough curve (BTC). Using the same model calibration parameters a dramatic increase in concentration at the start of the second particle BTC, generated after SRHA injection, could be simulated by matching microsphere concentrations to extrapolated RSA output. RSA results and microsphere/SRHA recoveries showed that 1 mg of SRHA could block 5.90 plus or minus 0.14 x 10^9 microsphere deposition sites. This figure was consistent between experiments injecting different SRHA masses, despite contrasting microsphere deposition/release regimes generating the second microsphere BTC.

Near-infrared (NIR) imaging was used to observe water vapour flow in a gas-solid fluidized bed reactor. The technique consisted of a broadband light, an optical filter with a bandwidth centred on strong water vapour absorptions, a Vidicon NIR camera, a nozzle from which an optically active mixture of gas and water vapour was trans-illuminated by an NIR beam and collected data of transmittance were normalized to actual optical path. The procedure was applied to a thin fluidized bed reactor with a low aspect ratio of tube to particle diameters (D-1/d(p)) in order to validate the wall effect on flow dynamics and mass transfer during the reduction of ceria-silica by hydrogen. High concentrations of water vapour emerged in the vicinity of the wall when the bed was operated at pseudo-static conditions but disappeared when the bed was run at minimum bubbling conditions. This result shows the capability of optical methods with affordable costs to 2D imaging opaque packed bed by using a spatially resolved probe located at the exit, which is of great benefit for in situ visualization of anisotropic concentrations in packed beds under industrially relevant conditions and thus for elucidation of the underlying reaction mechanism and diffusion interactions.
