Several studies with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents claim that maintenance therapy of renal anaemia may be possible at extended dosing intervals; however, few studies were randomized, results varied, and comparisons between agents were absent. We report results of a multi-national, randomized, prospective trial comparing haemoglobin maintenance with methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta and darbepoetin alfa administered once monthly.

Catalysts currently employed for the polymerization of ethylene have previously been found to deactivate in the presence of oxygen. It is, therefore, important that oxygen is removed from the ethylene feedstock prior to the polymerization. The Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity toward oxygen reduction with hydrogen in the presence of ethylene. TAP vacuum pulse experiments have been utilised to understand the catalytic behaviour of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. TAP multi-pulse experiments have determined the types of active sites that are found on the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, and the intrinsic activity of these sites. The lifetime of the reactive adsorbed oxygen intermediate has also been determined through TAP consecutive pulse experiments. Multi-pulse and consecutive pulse data have been combined with ethylene adsorption/desorption rate constants to provide an overview of the Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst system.

Electrochemically modified ethylene oxidation over a PI film supported on the Na+ ion conductor beta '' alumina has been studied over a range of conditions encompassing both promotion and poisoning, The system exhibits reversible behavior, and the data are interpreted in terms of (i) Na-enhanced oxygen chemisorption and (ii) poisoning of the surface by accumulation of Na compounds. At low Na coverages the first effect results in increased competitive adsorption of oxygen at the expense of ethylene, resulting in an increased rate, At very negative catalyst potentials (high Na coverage) both effects operate to poison the system: the increased strength of the Pt-O bond and coverage of the catalytic surface by compounds of Na strongly suppress the rate, Kinetic and spectroscopic results for ethylene oxidation over a Pt(111)-Na model catalyst shed light on important aspects of the electrochemically controlled system, Low levels of Na promote the reaction and high levels poison it, mirroring the behavior observed under electrochemical control and strongly suggesting that sodium pumped from the solid electrolyte is the key species, XP and Auger spectra show that under reaction conditions, the sodium exists as a surface carbonate. Post-reaction TPD spectra and the use of (CO)-C-13 demonstrate that CO is formed as a stable reaction intermediate, The observed activation energy (56 +/- 3 kJ/mol) is similar to that measured for CO oxidation under comparable conditions, suggesting that the rate limiting step is CO oxidation. Simulations of the injection stretch-blow moulding process have been developed for the manufacture of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS/standard. Initially a simulation of the manufacture of a 330 mL bottle was developed with three different material models (hyperelastic, creep, and a non-linear viscoelastic model (Buckley model)) to ascertain their suitability for modelling poly(ethylene terephthalate). The Buckley model was found to give results for the sidewall thickness that matched best with those measured from bottles off the production line. Following the investigation of the material models, the Buckley model was chosen to conduct a three-dimensional simulation of the manufacture of a 2 L bottle. It was found that the model was also capable of predicting the wall thickness distribution accurately for this bottle. In the development of the three-dimensional simulation a novel approach, which uses an axisymmetric model until the material reaches the petaloid base, was developed. This resulted in substantial savings in computing time. © 2000 IoM Communication Ltd.

The search for ideal biomaterials is still on-going for tissue regeneration. In this study, blends of Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) with Poly l-lactic acid (PLLA), Nalidixic Acid (NA) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) were prepared. Mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were investigated by tensile and flexural analysis, DSC, TGA, WXRD, MFI, BET, SEM and hot stage optical microscopy. Results showed that the loading of PLLA caused a significant decrease in tensile strength and almost total eradication of the elongation at break of PCL matrix, especially after PEG and NA addition. Increased stiffness was also noted with additional NA, PEG and PLLA, resulting in an increase in the flexural modulus of the blends.
Isothermal degradation indicated that bulk PCL, PLLA and the blends were thermally stable at 200°C for the duration of 2h making extrusion of the blends at this temperature viable. Morphological study showed that increasing the PLLA content and addition of the very low viscosity PEG and powder NA decreased the Melt Flow Indexer and increased the viscosity.
At the higher temperature the PLLA begins to soften and eventually melts allowing for increased flow and, coupling this with, the natural increase in MFI caused by temperature is enhanced further. The PEG and NA addition increased dramatically the pore volume which is important for cell growth and flow transport of nutrients and metabolic waste.

Transition metals are often introduced to a catalyst as promoters to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we study the promotion effect of transition metals on Co, the preferred catalytic metal for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis because of its good compromise of activity, selectivity and stability, for ethylene chemisorption using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, aiming to provide some insight into improving the alpha-olefin selectivity. In order to obtain the general trend of influence on ethylene chemisorption, twelve transition metals (Zr, Mn, Re, Ru, Rh, It, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au) are calculated. We find that the late transition metals (e.g. Pd and Cu) can decrease ethylene chemisorption energy. These results suggest that the addition of the late transition metals may improve alpha-olefin selectivity. Electronic structure analyses (both charge density distributions and density of states) are also performed and the understanding of calculated results is presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. A comparative study between a classic and a wireless electrochemical promotion experiment was undertaken as a tool towards the better understanding of both systems. The catalytic modification of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation was studied. The catalyst was supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ), a known pure oxide ion conductor, for the classic experiment and La 0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O 3-δ-a mixed oxide ion electronic conductor-was used for the wireless experiment. The two systems showed certain similarities in terms of the reaction classification (in both cases electrophobic behaviour was observed) and the promotion mechanism. Significant difference was observed in the time scales and the reversibility of the induced rate modification. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

To create clinically useful gold nanoparticle (AuNP) based cancer therapeutics it is necessary to co-functionalize the AuNP surface with a range of moieties; e.g. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG), peptides and drugs. AuNPs can be functionalized by creating either a mixed monolayer by attaching all the moieties directly to the surface using thiol chemistry, or by binding groups to the surface by means of a bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker. The linker methodology has the potential to enhance bioavailability and the amount of functional agent that can be attached. While there is a large body of published work using both surface arrangements independently, the impact of attachment methodology on stability, non-specific protein adsorption and cellular uptake is not well understood, with no published studies directly comparing the two most frequently employed approaches. This paper compares the two methodologies by synthesizing and characterizing PEG and Receptor Mediated Endocytosis (RME) peptide co-functionalized AuNPs prepared using both the mixed monolayer and linker approaches. Successful attachment of both PEG and RME peptide using the two methods was confirmed using Dynamic Light Scattering, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and gel electrophoresis. It was observed that while the 'as synthesized' citrate capped AuNPs agglomerated under physiological salt conditions, all the mixed monolayer and PEG linker capped samples remained stable at 1M NaCl, and were stable in PBS over extended periods. While it was noted that both functionalization methods inhibited non-specific protein attachment, the mixed monolayer samples did show some changes in gel electrophoresis migration profile after incubation with fetal calf serum. PEG renders the AuNP stable in-vivo however, studies with MDA-MB-231 and MCF 10A cell lines indicated that functionalization with PEG, blocks cellular uptake. It was observed that co-functionalization with RME peptide using both the mixed monolayer and PEG linker methods greatly enhanced cellular internalization compared to PEG capped AuNPs.
