Acidification of an isopropanol solution containing mixtures of [Ti(OPri)(4)] and [W(OEt)(5)] produced solutions from which various TiO2, WO3 and TiO2/WO3 thin films could be obtained by dip coating and annealing. The films were analysed by X-ray diffraction, SEM/EDAX, Raman, electronic spectra, contact angle and photoactivity with respect to destruction of an over layer of stearic acid. The TiO2/WO3 films were shown to be mixtures of two phases TiO2 and WO3 rather than a solid solution TixWyO2. The 2% tungsten oxide doped titania films were shown to be the most effective photocatalysts. All of the TiO2 and TiO2/WO3 films showed light induced superhydrophillicity. A new type of one-dimensional leaky-wave antenna (LWA) with independent control of the beam-pointing angle and beamwidth is presented. The antenna is based on a simple structure composed of a bulk parallel-plate waveguide (PPW) loaded with two printed circuit boards (PCBs), each one consisting of an array of printed dipoles. One PCB acts as a partially reflective surface (PRS), and the other grounded PCB behaves as a high impedance surface (HIS). It is shown that an independent control of the leaky-mode phase and leakage rate can be achieved by changing the lengths of the PRS and HIS dipoles, thus resulting in a flexible adjustment of the LWA pointing direction and directivity. The leaky-mode dispersion curves are obtained with a simple Transverse Equivalent Network (TEN), and they are validated with three-dimensional full-wave simulations. Experimental results on fabricated prototypes operating at 15 GHz are reported, demonstrating the versatile and independent control of the LWA performance by changing the PRS and HIS parameters.

To formulate therapeutic proteins into polymeric devices the protein is typically in the solid state, which can be achieved by the process of freeze-drying. However, freeze-drying not only risks denaturing the protein but it can adversely affect the cure characteristics of protein-loaded silicone elastomers. This study demonstrates that a variation in the parameters of the freeze-dryer can significantly affect the residual moisture content of freeze-dried BSA, which in turn has an effect on the bulk density and flow properties of the BSA. The bulk density and flow properties of the BSA subsequently affect the cure characteristics of BSA-loaded silicone elastomers. An increase in the residual moisture content results in the freeze-dried BSA having a decreased bulk density and poor flow properties which can have a detrimental effect on the cure characteristics of a freeze-dried BSA-loaded silicone elastomer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synopsis: Bonded-in rod timber joints off er several advantages over conventional types of joint, including high local force transfer, very stiff connections, and improved ?re and aesthetic properties since the connection is completely hidden in the insulating timber members. More recently, the use of ?bre reinforced polymer (FRP) as a connecting rod, alternative to steel rods, in bonded-in rod connections for timber structures has been investigated. However, the investigation into the behaviour of such joints is limited, in particular, connections involving basalt ?bre reinforced polymers (BFRP) bars - which is the primary focus of this research. This paper presents an experimental programme conducted to investigate the behaviour of bonded-in BFRP bars loaded parallel to the grain of glulam members. Tensile pull-out tests were conducted to examine the effect of bonded length and bond stress-slip on the structural capacity of the connection. An analytical design expression for predicting pull-out capacity is proposed and the results have been compared with some established design equations. It was found that pull-out load increased approximately linearly with the bonded length, up to maximum which occurred at a bonded length of 15 times the hole diameter, and did not increase beyond this bonded length. The most signi?cant failure modes were failure at the timber/adhesive interface followed by pullout of the BFRP rod. Increased bonded lengths resulted in higher bond slip values compared to lower equivalent bonded lengths. The proposed design model gave the best predictions of pull-out capacity compared with other existing models.

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic commonly used for treating Pseudomonas infections, but its use is limited by a relatively short half-life. In this investigation, developed a controlled-release gentamicin formulation using poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles. We demonstrate that entrapment of the hydrophilic drug into a hydrophobic PLGA polymer can be improved by increasing the pH of the formulation, reducing the hydrophilicity of the drug and thus enhancing entrapment, achieving levels of up to 22.4 µg/mg PLGA. Under standard incubation conditions, these particles exhibited controlled release of gentamicin for up to 16 days. These particles were tested against both planktonic and biofilm cultures of P. aeruginosa PA01 in vitro, as well as in a 96-hour peritoneal murine infection model. In this model, the particles elicited significantly improved antimicrobial effects as determined by lower plasma and peritoneal lavage colony-forming units and corresponding reductions of the surrogate inflammatory indicators interleukin-6 and myeloperoxidase compared to free drug administration by 96 hours. These data highlight that the controlled release of gentamicin may be applicable for treating Pseudomonas infections.

The excitation of surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) waveguide modes in subwavelength dielectric ridges deposited on a thin gold film has been characterized and optimized at telecommunication wavelengths. The experimental data on the electromagnetic mode structure obtained using scanning near-field optical microscopy have been directly compared to full vectorial three-dimensional finite element method simulations. Two excitation geometries have been investigated where SPPs are excited outside or inside the dielectric tapered region adjoint to the waveguide. The dependence of the efficiency of the SPP guided mode excitation on the taper opening angle has been measured and modeled. Single-mode guiding and strong lateral mode confinement of dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide modes have been characterized with the near-field measurements and compared to the effective-index method model.

Zirconia modified SBA-15 becomes a very active catalyst for the selective hydrolysis of cellobiose to glucose after sulfation. Spectroscopic investigations indicate the presence of Bronsted acid sites with similar properties to those present in conventional sulfated zirconia. Indications are found that the sulfate groups attached to zirconia interact with silanol groups of SBA-15. The catalytic activity in cellobiose hydrolysis correlates well with results for temperature-programmed decomposition of i-propylamine for a range of sulfated ZrO2/SBA-15 catalysts. A glucose yield of 60% during cellobiose hydrolysis at a reaction time of 90 min at 160 degrees C is obtained.

Methane activation via bromination can be a feasible route with selective synthesis of mono-bromomethane. It is known that the condensation of brominated products into higher hydrocarbons can result in coking and deactivation in the presence of di-bromomethane. In this study, selective production of methyl bromide was investigated over sulfated ZrO2 included SBA-15 structures. It was observed that the higher the ZrO2 amounts the higher the conversion, while the catalyst remained >99% selective for the monobrominated methane. Over 25 mol.% ZrO2 included SBA-15 catalyst with a BET surface area of 246 m(2)/g, methane was brominated with 69% conversion at 340 degrees C and only CH3Br was selectively produced. In order to prepare high surface area highly acidic catalysts, different weight loadings of ZrO2 were incorporated in the SBA-15 structures which are subsequently sulfated by treating in 0.25 M H2SO4. The catalysts were characterized by means of TEM, XRD, N-2 adsorption, and H-1 MAS NMR. Bronsted type acidities of sulfated zirconia included SBA-15 materials were identified by a sharp H-1 MAS NMR line at 10.6 ppm. The highest acidity was obtained in the 25 mol% ZrO2 included SBA-15 catalyst with a BET surface area of 246 m(2)/g.

The behaviour of Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) loaded perpendicular to glulam timber elements was investigated. It was found that pull-out load increased approximately linearly with the bonded length up to maximum which occurred at a bonded length of 250 mm (~15 times the hole diameter) and did not increase beyond this bonded length. Failure mode of the samples was mostly shear fracture which was located at the cylindrical zone at the timber/adhesive interface. Increased bonded lengths resulted in corresponding decrease in interfacial bond stress. At 250 mm bonded length, the pull-out capacity of the proposed design model was about 2% lower than that of the tests. The results also showed that the bond stress of the theoretical model (at the ascending and descending branches) of the stress–slip curve was approximately 5–10% of that of the experiment.
