I have used recent laboratory studies on the reactions of the phosphorus hydride ions, PH(n)+ (n = 0-4) to construct a new model of phosphorus chemistry in interstellar clouds. I find that the non-detection of PN in cold, dark clouds in consistent with the chemical models only if the depletion of phosphorus in large, approximately 10(4) in TMC-1. Although the laboratory studies indicate that organo-phosphorus chains C(n)P can be formed, this large depletion precludes the detection of any phosphorus-bearing moleclues in cold clouds. However, in warm clouds associated with star formation, the depletion of phosphorus may be reduced. In this case one can reproduce the PN abundance toward Orion KL with a depletion factor of about 300. Interestingly, if the organo-phosphorus species are not destroyed by O atoms, I predict fractional abundances in Ori KL of between 10(-11) and 10(-10) for C(n)P (n = 2-4) and HCCP.

Voltage-sensitive ionic currents were identified and characterised in ventricular myocytes of the bivalve mollusc, Mytilus edulis, using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique. Two outward currents could be distinguished. A potassium A current (I-A) activated at - 30 mV from a holding potential of - 60 mV. This transient current was inactivated by holding the cells at a potential of - 40 mV and was also blocked by applying 4-aminopyridine (3 mM) to the external bath solution. A second current was identified as a delayed rectifier (I-K). This also activated at - 30 mV but exhibited a sustained time course and was still activated at a holding potential of - 40 mV. Both outward currents were reduced in the presence of tetraethylammonium ions (30 mM). A small number of heart cells also showed an inward sodium current (I-Na). This current appeared at potentials more positive than - 50 mV, reached a maximum at - 20 mV, and decreased with further depolarisation. I-Na was inactivated at a holding potential of - 40 mV and was blocked by tetrodotoxin (1 mu M). A second inward current had a sustained time course and was not inactivated by holding the cell at a potential of -40 mV, and was also not abolished by tetrodotoxin. This current peaked at 0 mV, decreasing with further depolarisation. Furthermore, it was enhanced by the addition of barium ions (3 mM) to the bath and was blocked by external cobalt (2 mM) or nifedipine (15 mu M) These findings are consistent with this being an L-type calcium current (I-Ca) The possible physiological roles of these currents in M. edulis heart are discussed. The localization and distribution of the serotoninergic components of the nervous system in the hydatid organism, Echinococcus granulosus, were determined by immunocytochemical techniques in conjunction with confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM). The distribution of serotonin immunoreactivity (IR) paralleled that previously described for cholinesterase activity, although it was more widespread. Nerve cell bodies and nerve fibres immunoreactive for 5-HT were present throughout the central nervous system (CNS), occurring in the paired lateral, posterior lateral and rostellar ganglia, their connecting commissures and nerve rings in the scolex and in the ten longitudinal nerve cords that run posteriorly throughout the body of the worm. A large population of nerve cell bodies was associated with the lateral nerve cords. In the peripheral nervous system (PNS), immunoreactive nerve fibres occurred in well-developed nerve plexuses innervating the somatic musculature and the musculature of the rostellum and suckers. The genital atrium and associated reproductive ducts were richly innervated with serotoninergic nerve cell bodies and nerve fibres.
