Colourless single crystals of [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](NO3)(3) were obtained from a reaction of silver(l) nitrate and 3,5-dimethyl-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (Dat). In the crystal structure (orthorhombic, Fdd2, Z = 8, a = 1100.1(2), b = 3500.3(2), c = 1015.4(3) pm, R, = 0.0434) there are two crystallographically non-equivalent silver sites in a one (Ag1) to two ratio (Ag2). Both resemble linear N-Ag-N coordination although angles are 163 degrees and 144 degrees, respectively Each Dat ligand coordinates with the two ring nitrogen atoms at 216 to 219 pm and with one amino-nitrogen atom at 229 pro. According to the composition [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](3+) = [(Dat)Ag-3/2](3+), a polymeric structure is built with all Ag+ ions bridging.

This paper reports a systematic study of the dependence on atomic number of the dielectronic recombination resonance strengths for He-like, Li-like and Be-like ions. Recent measurements of dielectronic recombination resonance strengths for the KLL and KLM manifolds for iron, yttrium, iodine, holmium, and bismuth are also described. The resonance strengths were normalized to calculated electron impact ionization cross sections. The measured resonance strengths generally agree well with theoretical calculations using the distorted wave approximation. However, KLM resonance strength measurements on high atomic number open-shell ions gave higher values than those suggested by calculations. Using recently measured data, along with existing results, scaling laws have been generated as a function of atomic number for He-like, Li-like, and Be-like ions in the KLL and KLM manifolds.

A many-body theory approach developed by the authors [Phys. Rev. A 70, 032720 (2004)] is applied to positron bound states and annihilation rates in atomic systems. Within the formalism, full account of virtual positronium (Ps) formation is made by summing the electron-positron ladder diagram series, thus enabling the theory to include all important many-body correlation effects in the positron problem. Numerical calculations have been performed for positron bound states with the hydrogen and halogen negative ions, also known as Ps hydride and Ps halides. The Ps binding energies of 1.118, 2.718, 2.245, 1.873 and 1.393 eV and annihilation rates of 2.544, 2.482, 1.984, 1.913 and 1.809 ns^{-1}, have been obtained for PsH, PsF, PsCl, PsBr and PsI, respectively.

We present an efficient and accurate method to study electron detachment from negative ions by a few-cycle linearly polarized laser pulse. The adiabatic saddle-point method of Gribakin and Kuchiev [Phys. Rev. A 55, 3760 (1997)] is adapted to calculate the transition amplitude for a short laser pulse. Its application to a pulse with N optical cycles produces 2(N + 1) saddle points in complex time, which form a characteristic "smile." Numerical calculations are performed for H(-) in a 5-cycle pulse with frequency 0.0043 a.u. and intensities of 10(10), 5 x 10(10), and 10(11) W/cm(2), and for various carrier-envelope phases. We determine the spectrum of the photoelectrons as a function of both energy and emission angle, as well as the angle-integrated energy spectra and total detachment probabilities. Our calculations show that the dominant contribution to the transition amplitude is given by 5-6 central saddle points, which correspond to the strongest part of the pulse. We examine the dependence of the photoelectron angular distributions on the carrier-envelope phase and show that measuring such distributions can provide a way of determining this phase.

The Nonlinear self-modulation of dust acoustic waves is studied in the presence of non-thermal (non-Maxwellian) ion and electron populations. By employing a multiple scale technique, a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation (NLSE) is derived for the wave amplitude. The influence of non-thermality, in addition to obliqueness (between the propagation and modulation directions), on the conditions for modulational instability to occur is discussed. Different types of localized solutions (envelope excitations) which may possibly occur are discussed, and the dependence of their characteristics oil physical parameters is traced. The ion deviation from a Maxwellian distribution comes out to be more important than the electron analogous deviation alone. Both yield a de-stabilizing effect oil (the amplitude of) DAWs propagating in a dusty plasma with negative dust grains, and thus favour the formation of bright- (rather than dark-) type envelope structures, (solitons) in the plasma. A similar tendency towards amplitude de-stabilization is found for the ease of the presence of positively charged dust in the plasma.

Electron attachment to nitroaromatic compound 2-nitro-m-xylene in gas phase has been performed utilizing a double focusing two sector mass spectrometer with high mass resolution (m/Delta m approximate to 2500). At low energy (below 20 eV), electron interactions with the neutral 2-nitro-m-xylene molecule reveal a very rich fragmentation pattern. A total of 60 fragment anions have been detected and the ion yield for all observed negative ions has been recorded as a function of the incident electron energy, among them a long lived (metastable) non-dissociated parent anion which is formed at energies near zero eV, and some ions observed at the mass numbers 26,42 and 121. Comparison of calculated isotopic patterns with measured ion yields for these fragment anions and their successors in the mass spectrum, allows the assignment of the chemical composition of these fragments as CN- (26 Da), CNO- (42 Da) and C8H9O- (121 Da). Electron attachment to 2-nitro-m-xylene leads to anion formation at four energy ranges. Between 0 eV and 2 eV only few product ions are formed. Between 4.6 eV and 6.1 eV all fragment anions are formed and for most of them the anion yield reaches its maximum value in this range. NO2- which is the most abundant product [M-H](-) and O- are the only fragments that exhibit a feature at 7.4eV, 8.1 eV and 7.9eV, respectively. About half of the fragment anions exhibit a broad, mostly low-intensity resonance between 9 eV and 10 eV. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We undertake a detailed analysis of the non-local properties of the fundamental problem of two trapped, distinguishable neutral atoms that interact with a short-range potential characterized by an s-wave scattering length. We show that this interaction generates continuous variable (CV) entanglement between the external degrees of freedom of the atoms and consider its behaviour as a function of both, the distance between the traps and the magnitude of the inter-particle scattering length. We first quantify the entanglement in the ground state of the system at zero temperature and then, adopting a phase-space approach, test the violation of the Clauser-Horn-Shimony-Holt inequality at zero and non-zero temperature and under the effects of general dissipative local environments.

Two semianalytical relations [Nature, 1996, 381, 137 and Phys. Rev. Lett. 2001, 87, 245901] predicting dynamical coefficients of simple liquids on the basis of structural properties have been tested by extensive molecular dynamics simulations for an idealized 2:1 model molten salt. In agreement with previous simulation studies, our results support the validity of the relation expressing the self-diffusion coefficient as a Function of the radial distribution functions for all thermodynamic conditions such that the system is in the ionic (ie., fully dissociated) liquid state. Deviations are apparent for high-density samples in the amorphous state and in the low-density, low-temperature range, when ions condense into AB(2) molecules. A similar relation predicting the ionic conductivity is only partially validated by our data. The simulation results, covering 210 distinct thermodynamic states, represent an extended database to tune and validate semianalytical theories of dynamical properties and provide a baseline for the interpretation of properties of more complex systems such as the room-temperature ionic liquids.

Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We employ time-dependent R-matrix theory to study ultra-fast dynamics in the doublet 2s2p(2) configuration of C+ for a total magnetic quantum number M = 1. In contrast to the dynamics observed for M = 0, ultra-fast dynamics for M = 1 is governed by spin dynamics in which the 2s electron acts as a flag rather than a spectator electron. Under the assumption that m(S) = 1/2, m(2s) = 1/2 allows spin dynamics involving the two 2p electrons, whereas m(2s) = -1/2 prevents spin dynamics of the two 2p electrons. For a pump-probe pulse scheme with (h) over bar omega(pump) = 10.9 eV and (h) over bar omega(probe) = 16.3 eV and both pulses six cycles long, little sign of spin dynamics is observed in the total ionization probability. Signs of spin dynamics can be observed, however, in the ejected-electron momentum distributions. We demonstrate that the ejected-electron momentum distributions can be used for unaligned targets to separate the contributions of initial M = 0 and M = 1 levels. This would, in principle, allow unaligned target ions to be used to obtain information on the different dynamics in the 2s2p(2) configuration for the M = 0 and M = 1 levels from a single experime

Ultrasound promotes the reduction of hexacyanoferrate(III) by thiosulfate ions mediated by RuO2 . xH(2)O under diffusion-controlled conditions. There is a strong correlation between the measured first-order rate constant and the absorbance of the dispersion, which, in turn, is closely related to the specific surface area of the catalyst. The enhancement in rate with ultrasonic irradiation appears to be largely associated with the dispersive action of the ultrasound on the aggregated particles of RuO2 . xH(2)O. The rate of reaction increases with increasing %duty cycle and ultrasonic intensity. The measured overall activation energies for the reaction with and without ultrasound, i.e. 18 +/- 1 and 20 +/- 1 kJ mol(-1), respectively, are very similar to those expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction. The homogeneous reaction is not promoted by ultrasound.

The results of a kinetic study of the oxidative dissolution of ruthenium dioxide hydrate to ruthenium tetroxide by periodate ions, IO4-, in acidic solution are described. The kinetics of dissolution give a good fit to a 'soft-centre' model in which the particles of RuO2.xH2O are assumed to be monodispersed, spherical but inhomogeneous in composition, comprising a difficult-to-corrode outer shell and a more easy-to-corrode inner core. In this work metaperiodate appears to act as a two-electron oxidant. The observed kinetics fit a reaction scheme in which the rate-determining step is the reaction between a surface site and an adsorbed IO4 ion and there is competitive adsorption by any IO3- present. In the absence and presence of an excess of IO3- ions, the overall activation energy for the corrosion reaction was determined to be 38 +/- 2 and 54 +/- 4 kJ mol-1, respectively.
