The reactivity of electrogenerated bromine with cyclohexene has been studied on a platinum microelectrode by linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry in both the room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, and the conventional aprotic solvent, acetonitrile. Variation in the voltammetric response was observed in the two solvents, indicating that the bromination reaction proceeded via separate mechanisms. To identify the different products, electrolysis was conducted on the preparative scale and NMR spectroscopy confirmed that while bromination of the organic substrate in the ionic liquid yields trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane, in acetonitrile, trans-1-(N-acetylamino)-2-bromocyclohexane is instead obtained as the major product. The reaction mechanism for bromination in acetonitrile has been modeled using digital simulation.

The formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during a combustion process is difficult to avoid because of the large exotherm and the consequent problem of avoiding local high-temperature spikes. Consequently, for many applications, such as for automotive power generation, there will be a continuing need to use catalytic after-treatment to reduce harmful emissions. The investigation of the mechanisms of the key catalytic reactions in environmental catalysis can provide an insight into the action of the catalyst, and time-resolved methods offer a powerful means to study these processes under realistic conditions. The use of Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) and Steady State Isotopic Transient Kinetic Analysis (SSITKA) methods to investigate the reduction of NOx under various experimental conditions is described. From a detailed analysis of the SSITKA profiles, it is shown that at low temperatures the mechanism for the formation of N-2 and N2O from NO may differ from the conventional high-temperature mechanism. This is supported by density functional theory calculations, which show that the barrier to the formation of N2O from the reaction of N(ads) and NO(ads) may be too high to allow this process to occur at low temperatures. The alternative reaction of NO(ads) + NO(ads) = N2O(g) + O(ads) is shown to be much more favorable and is consistent with the SSITKA analysis. The remarkable effect of hydrogen as a reductant at low temperatures is described, and alternative interpretations of the role of hydrogen are discussed.

Research on the selective reduction of NOx with hydrocarbons under lean-burn conditions using non-zeolitic oxides and platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts has been critically reviewed. Alumina and silver-promoted alumina catalysts have been described in detail with particular emphasis on an analysis of the various reaction mechanisms that have been put forward in the literature. The influence of the nature of the reducing agent, and the preparation and structure of the catalysts have also been discussed and rationalised for several other oxide systems. It is concluded for non-zeolitic oxides that species that are strongly adsorbed on the surface, such as nitrates/nitrites and acetates, could be key intermediates in the formation of various reduced and oxidised species of nitrogen, the further reaction of which leads eventually to the formation of molecular nitrogen. For the platinum group metal catalysts, the different mechanisms that have been proposed in the literature have been critically assessed. It is concluded that although there is indirect, mainly spectroscopic, evidence for various reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface, it is difficult to confirm that any of these are involved in a critical mechanistic step because of a lack of a direct quantitative correlation between infrared and kinetic measurements. A simple mechanism which involves the dissociation of NO on a reduced metal surface to give N(ads) and O(ads), with subsequent desorption of N-2 and N2O and removal of O(ads) by the reductant can explain many of the results with the platinum group metal catalysts, although an additional contribution from organo-nitro-type species may contribute to the overall NOx reduction activity with these catalysts.

The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which adults with Down syndrome (DS) are able to utilise advance information to prepare reach to grasp movements. The study comprised ten adults with DS; ten children matched to an individual in the group with DS on the basis of their intellectual ability, and twelve adult controls. The participants used their right hand to reach out and grasp illuminated perspex blocks. Four target blocks were positioned on a table surface, two to each side of the midsagittal plane. In the complete precue condition, participants were provided with information specifying the location of the target. In the partial precue condition, participants were given advance information indicating the location of the object relative to the midsagittal plane (left or right). In the null condition, advance information concerning the position of the target object was entirely ambiguous. It was found that both reaction times and movement times were greater for the participants with DS than for the adults without DS. The reaction times exhibited by individuals with DS in the complete precue condition were lower than those observed in the null condition, indicating that they had utilised advance information to prepare their movements. In the group with DS, when advance information specified only the location of the target object relative to the midline, reaction times were equivalent to those obtained when ambiguous information was given. In contrast, the adults without DS exhibited reaction times that were lower in both the complete and partial precue conditions when compared to the null condition. The pattern of results exhibited by the children was similar to that of the adults without DS. The movement times exhibited by all groups were not influenced by the precue condition. In summary, our findings indicate that individuals with DS are able to use advance information if it specifies precisely the location of the target object in order to prepare a reach to grasp movement. The group with DS were unable, however, to obtain the normal advantage of advance information specifying only one dimension of the movement goal (i.e., the position of an object relative to the body midline). Voltammetry is reported for chlorine, Cl-2, dissolved in various room temperature ionic liquids using platinum microdisk electrodes. A single reductive voltammetric wave is seen and attributed to the two-electron reduction of chlorine to chloride. Studies of the effect of voltage scan rate reveal uniquely unusual behavior in which the magnitude of the currents decrease with increasing scan rates. A model for this is proposed and shown to indicate the presence of strongly adsorbed species in the electrode reaction mechanism, most likely chlorine atoms, Cl*((ads)).

The kinetics of the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of cellobiose in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(2)mim]Cl, was studied as a model for general lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis in ionic liquid systems. The results show that the rate of the two competing reactions, polysaccharide hydrolysis and sugar decomposition, vary with acid strength, and that for acids with an aqueous pK(a) below approximately zero, the hydrolysis reaction is significantly faster than the degradation of glucose, thus allowing hydrolysis to be performed with a high selectivity in glucose. In tests with soluble cellulose, hemicellulose (xylan), and lignocellulosic biomass (Miscanthus grass), comparable hydrolysis rates were observed with bond scission occurring randomly along the biopolymer chains, in contrast to end-group hydrolysis observed with aqueous acids.

Lanthanide(III) complexes of p-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(p-NBSA)(3), m-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(m-NBSA)(3), and 2,4-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid, Ln(2,4-NBSA)(3), were prepared, characterized and examined as catalyst for the nitration of benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, bromobenzene and chlorobenzene. The initial screening of the catalysts showed that lanthanum(III) complexes were more effective than the corresponding ytterbium(III) complexes, and that catalysts containing the bulky 2,4-NBSA ligand were less effective than the catalyst containing p-NBSA (nosylate) or m-NBSA ligands. Examination of a series of Ln(p-NBSA)(3) and Ln(m-NBSA)(3) catalysts revealed that there is a clear correlation between the ionic radii of the lanthanide(III) ions and the yields of nitration, with the lighter lanthanides being more effective. The X-ray single crystal structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3).6H(2)O shows that two m-NBSA ligands are directly bound to the metal centre while the third ligand is not located in the first coordination sphere, but it is hydrogen bonded to one of the water molecules which is coordinated to ytterbium(III). NMR studies suggest that this structure is preserved under the conditions used in the nitration reaction. The structure of Yb(m-NBSA)(3) is markedly different from the structure of the well-known ytterbium(III) triflate catalyst. The coordination of the nitrobenzenesulfonate counterion to the lanthanide(III) ion suggests that steric effects might play an important role in determining the efficiency of these novel nitration catalysts. Intramolecular Heck cyclisation of (E)-vinyl bromides leads to indolizidines, related to pumiliotoxin alkaloids, in which the stereochemistry of the trisubstituted double bond undergoes inversion. A cyclopropyl intermediate, which is believed to be responsible for the double bond inversion, has been intercepted by forcing an 'early' beta-hydride elimination on this species. The relative stereochemistry of this cyclopropyl intermediate determines the regioselectivity of the final beta-hydride elimination. In this case all three beta-hydride eliminations were stereochemically permitted, giving rise to a mixture of three isomeric products, differing in the position of a double bond. (Z)-Vinyl bromides were found to be less reactive than (E)-vinyl bromides, but on cyclisation gave the required conjugated diene, with inversion of the vinyl bromide stereochemistry, as the sole reaction product. This methodology will allow rapid stereoselective access to the diene-based pumiliotoxin alkaloids.

A thermodynamic analysis of the experimental conditions of the Beckmann rearrangement reaction of oximes into amides has been undertaken to examine whether the reaction is under thermodynamic or kinetic control. To answer this question, the thermodynamic properties of the typical Beckmann rearrangement reactions in the ideal gaseous state-cyclohexanone oxime to caprolactam and 2-butanone oxime to N-methylpropanarnide-were studied by using the quantum mechanical method. Gibbs energy and equilibrium constants of the Beckmann rearrangement have been assessed in the gaseous and the liquid phases. Results of the thermodynamic analysis have shown that Beckmann rearrange ments are kinetically controlled. Thus, a search for possible active ionic liquid based catalysts for the mild reaction conditions has been performed.

BACKGROUND: Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) arise from the spontaneous reaction of reducing sugars with the amino groups of macromolecules. AGEs accumulate in tissue as a consequence of diabetes and aging and have been causally implicated in the pathogenesis of several of the end-organ complications of diabetes and aging, including cataract, atherosclerosis, and renal insufficiency. It has been recently proposed that components in mainstream cigarette smoke can react with plasma and extracellular matrix proteins to form covalent adducts with many of the properties of AGEs. We wished to ascertain whether AGEs or immunochemically related molecules are present at higher levels in the tissues of smokers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lens and coronary artery specimens from nondiabetic smokers and nondiabetic nonsmokers were examined by immunohistochemistry, immunoelectron microscopy, and ELISA employing several distinct anti-AGE antibodies. In addition, lenticular extracts were tested for AGE-associated fluorescence by fluorescence spectroscopy.

RESULTS: Immunoreactive AGEs were present at significantly higher levels in the lenses and lenticular extracts of nondiabetic smokers (p < 0.003). Anti-AGE immunogold staining was diffusely distributed throughout lens fiber cells. AGE-associated fluorescence was significantly increased in the lenticular extracts of nondiabetic smokers (p = 0.005). AGE-immunoreactivity was significantly elevated in coronary arteries from nondiabetic smokers compared with nondiabetic nonsmokers (p = 0.015).

CONCLUSIONS: AGEs or immunochemically related molecules are present at higher levels in the tissues of smokers than in nonsmokers, irrespective of diabetes. In view of previous reports implicating AGEs in a causal association with numerous pathologies, these findings have significant ramifications for understanding the etiopathology of diseases associated with smoking, the single greatest preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States.

Microkinetic model is developed in the free energy landscape based on density functional theory (DFT) to quantitatively investigate the reaction mechanism of chemoselective partial hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde to crotyl alcohol over Pt(1 1 1) at the temperature of 353 K. Three different methods (mobile, immobile and collision theory models) were carried out to obtain free energy barrier of adsorption/desorption processes. The results from mobile and collision theory models are similar. The calculated TOFs from both models are close to the experiment value. However, for the immobile model, in which the free energy barrier of desorption approaches the energy barrier, the calculated TOF is 2 orders of magnitude lower than the other models. The difficulty of adsorption/ desorption may be overestimated in the immobile model. In addition, detailed analyses show that for the surface hydrogenation elementary steps, the entropy and internal energy effects are small under the reaction condition, while the zero-point-energy (ZPE) correction is significant, especially for the multi-step hydrogenation reaction. The total energy with the ZPE correction approaches to the full free energy calculation for the surface reaction under the reaction condition. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pt-ceria catalysts present different surface chemistries depending on the preparation method and the pretreatment. The catalytic behavior of Pt/CeO2 catalysts in the hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) to ethylene was examined as a function of the pretreatment conditions and the noble metal precursor salts. Using FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, significant differences were observed in the surface properties of Pt/CeO2 prepared from the H2PtCl6 precursor after different pretreatment procedures (i.e.. reduction or oxidation-reduction). These surface changes are related to chloride residues from the synthesis. Strong changes were observed in the selectivity of the catalysts to ethylene depending on the pretreatment conditions. The 0.5%Pt/CeO2 catalyst showed a 13% selectivity toward ethylene after reduction, whereas alter oxidation, followed by reduction, the selectivity increased up to 85% at the same conversion level. This effect was only observed when a chloride-containing precursor was used in the preparation. In this way, it is demonstrated that the use of a Cl-containing Pt precursor and an air treatment prior to reduction strongly improves the ethylene selectivity of Pt-CeO2 dechlorination catalysts. This can be explained by formation or a CeOCl phase during the synthesis that decomposes upon air tempering, producing oxygen vacancies on the ceria support. We propose that these oxygen vacancies are active for cleaving off Cl from the TCE. Pt then supplies II to clean-off Cl as HCl. Reaction of TCE on Pt produces rather ethane, so Pt may be partly Cl-poisoned for the hydrodechlorination reaction but not for II, dissociation or CO adsorption.

We have investigated the effects of depletion of the elements C, N and O on the chemical composition of dark clouds, using both isothermal and isochoric cloud models. Our work differs from previous approaches in that we have considered a much larger range of CNO depletions. We have included the chemistry of the ortho-and para-forms of H2 and the exothermic reaction between N+ and ortho-H2, which synthesizes NH3. In the isothermal models, the ortho:para ratio is very small at large depletions, but NH3 formation is still efficient owing to reactions between He+ and CN or HCN. In the isochoric models, the equilibrium temperature of the gas is larger, and a thermal ortho:para ratio, which is large enough to drive NH3 formation, results. In all cases, the fractional abundance of NH3 is close to 10(-8) and this may help to explain the puzzling observation that, in dark clouds, the column density of NH3 is always close to 10(15) cm-2.
