Results are presented for e(+) scattering by H- in the impact energy range 0less than or equal toE(0)less than or equal to10 eV. These include integrated cross sections for Ps formation in the 1s, 2s, and 2p states, as well as in an aggregate of states with ngreater than or equal to3, and for direct ionization. Differential cross sections for Ps formation in the 1s, 2s, and 2p states are also exhibited. The calculations are based on a coupled pseudostate approach employing 19 Ps pseudostates centered on the e(+). It is found that Ps formation in the 2p state dominates that in the 1s or 2s states below 8 eV, that formation in states with ngreater than or equal to3 exceeds the sum of the n=1 and n=2 cross sections above 2.5 eV, and that direct ionization outstrips total Ps formation above 6.3 eV. The threshold law (E-0-->0) for exothermic Ps formation, which includes the cases Ps(1s), Ps(2s), and Ps(2p), is shown to be 1/E-0.

Results are presented of high-resolution scattering experiments involving electron collisions with CO2 and CS2, between a few meV and 200 meV impact energy. Virtual state scattering is shown to dominate the low-energy behaviour for both species. The most striking features of the scattering spectrum for CS2 are, however, giant resonances with cross sections greater by more than an order of magnitude than those generally encountered in low-energy scattering. A strong feature centred at 15 meV is attributed to the involvement of CS2- and is interpreted to be a consequence of the virtual state effect.

Experimental data are presented for the scattering of cold electrons by CS2, for both integral and backward scattering, between a few meV and a few hundred meV impact energy. Giant resonances with cross sections in excess of 50 Angstrom(2) are observed below 100 meV, associated with the transient formation of CS2- at 15 meV and with the bend and symmetric stretch of CS2 at thresholds of 49 and 82 meV, respectively. The resonance at 49 meV is 2 orders of magnitude greater in cross section than a dipole impulsive model predicts. These structures are superimposed on a sharp rise in the scattering cross section at low energy, which may be attributed to virtual state scattering.

Experimental data are presented for the scattering of electrons by H2O between 17 and 250 meV impact energy. These results are used in conjunction with a generally applicable method, based on a quantum defect theory approach to electron-polar molecule collisions, to derive the first set of data for state-to-state rotationally inelastic scattering cross sections based on experimental values.

A broad survey of harmonic dynamics in AB(2) clusters with up to N = 3000 atoms is performed using a simple rigid ion model, with ionic radii selected to give rutile as the ground state structure for the corresponding extended crystal. The vibrational density of states is already close to its bulk counterpart for N similar to 500, with characteristic differences due to surfaces, edges and vertices. Two methods are proposed and tested to map the cluster vibrational states onto the rutile crystal phonons. The net distinction between infrared (IR) active and Raman active modes that exists for bulk rutile becomes more and more blurred as the cluster size is reduced. It is found that, in general, the higher the IR activity of the mode, the more this is affected by the system size. IR active modes are found to spread over a wide frequency range for the finite clusters. Simple models based on either a crude confinement constraint or surface pressure arguments fail to reproduce the results of the calculations. The effects of the stoichiometry and dielectric properties of the surrounding medium on the vibrational properties of the clusters are also investigated.

Translational energy spectroscopy (TES) has been used to study state-selective one-electron capture by H and He-like ions of C, N and O in both H and H-2 within the range 250-900 eV amu(- 1). The main collision mechanisms leading to state-selective electron capture have been identified, their relative importance assessed and compared, where possible, with theoretical predictions and with any previous measurements based on photon emission spectroscopy. For one-electron capture in H-2, the relative importance of contributions from non- dissociative and dissociative capture as well as from two- electron capture into autoionizing states is found to be strikingly different for the cases considered. Our TES measurements in atomic hydrogen provide an important extension of previous measurements to energies below 1000 eV amu(-1) and show that, as the impact energy decreases, electron capture becomes more selective until only a single n product channel is significant. These product main channels are well described by reaction windows calculated using a Landau-Zener approach. However, the same approach applied to the more complex energy- change spectra observed in H-2 is found to be less successful.

An artificial neural network (ANN) model is developed for the analysis and simulation of the correlation between the properties of maraging steels and composition, processing and working conditions. The input parameters of the model consist of alloy composition, processing parameters (including cold deformation degree, ageing temperature, and ageing time), and working temperature. The outputs of the ANN model include property parameters namely: ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction in area, hardness, notched tensile strength, Charpy impact energy, fracture toughness, and martensitic transformation start temperature. Good performance of the ANN model is achieved. The model can be used to calculate properties of maraging steels as functions of alloy composition, processing parameters, and working condition. The combined influence of Co and Mo on the properties of maraging steels is simulated using the model. The results are in agreement with experimental data. Explanation of the calculated results from the metallurgical point of view is attempted. The model can be used as a guide for further alloy development.

One possible loosening mechanism of the femoral component in total hip replacement is fatigue cracking of the cement mantle. A computational method capable of simulating this process may therefore be a useful tool in the preclinical evaluation of prospective implants. In this study, we investigated the ability of a computational method to predict fatigue cracking in experimental models of the implanted femur construct. Experimental specimens were fabricated such that cement mantle visualisation was possible throughout the test. Two different implant surface finishes were considered: grit blasted and polished. Loading was applied to represent level gait for two million cycles. Computational (finite element) models were generated to the same geometry as the experimental specimens, with residual stress and porosity simulated in the cement mantle. Cement fatigue and creep were modelled over a simulated two million cycles. For the polished stem surface finish, the predicted fracture locations in the finite element models closely matched those on the experimental specimens, and the recorded stem displacements were also comparable. For the grit blasted stem surface finish, no cement mantle fractures were predicted by the computational method, which was again in agreement with the experimental results. It was concluded that the computational method was capable of predicting cement mantle fracture and subsequent stem displacement for the structure considered. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A eukaryotic cell attaches and spreads on substrates, whether it is the extracellular matrix naturally produced by the cell itself, or artificial materials, such as tissue-engineered scaffolds. Attachment and spreading require the cell to apply forces in the nN range to the substrate via adhesion sites, and these forces are balanced by the elastic response of the substrate. This mechanical interaction is one determinant of cell morphology and, ultimately, cell phenotype. In this paper we use a finite element model of a cell, with a tensegrity structure to model the cytoskeleton of actin filaments and microtubules, to explore the way cells sense the stiffness of the substrate and thereby adapt to it. To support the computational results, an analytical 1D model is developed for comparison. We find that (i) the tensegrity hypothesis of the cytoskeleton is sufficient to explain the matrix-elasticity sensing, (ii) cell sensitivity is not constant but has a bell-shaped distribution over the physiological matrix-elasticity range, and (iii) the position of the sensitivity peak over the matrix-elasticity range depends on the cytoskeletal structure and in particular on the F-actin organisation. Our model suggests that F-actin reorganisation observed in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in response to change of matrix elasticity is a structural-remodelling process that shifts the sensitivity peak towards the new value of matrix elasticity. This finding discloses a potential regulatory role of scaffold stiffness for cell differentiation.

Background and purpose: The addition of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) to tumours leads to an increase in dose due to their high density and energy absorption coefficient, making it a potential radiosensitiser. However, experiments have observed radiosensitisations significantly larger than the increase in dose alone, including at megavoltage energies where gold's relative energy absorption is lowest. This work investigates whether GNPs create dose inhomogeneities on a sub-cellular scale which combine with non-linear dose dependence of cell survival to be the source of radiosensitisation at megavoltage energies.

Traditional static analysis fails to auto-parallelize programs with a complex control and data flow. Furthermore, thread-level parallelism in such programs is often restricted to pipeline parallelism, which can be hard to discover by a programmer. In this paper we propose a tool that, based on profiling information, helps the programmer to discover parallelism. The programmer hand-picks the code transformations from among the proposed candidates which are then applied by automatic code transformation techniques.

This paper contributes to the literature by presenting a profiling tool for discovering thread-level parallelism. We track dependencies at the whole-data structure level rather than at the element level or byte level in order to limit the profiling overhead. We perform a thorough analysis of the needs and costs of this technique. Furthermore, we present and validate the belief that programs with complex control and data flow contain significant amounts of exploitable coarse-grain pipeline parallelism in the program’s outer loops. This observation validates our approach to whole-data structure dependencies. As state-of-the-art compilers focus on loops iterating over data structure members, this observation also explains why our approach finds coarse-grain pipeline parallelism in cases that have remained out of reach for state-of-the-art compilers. In cases where traditional compilation techniques do find parallelism, our approach allows to discover higher degrees of parallelism, allowing a 40% speedup over traditional compilation techniques. Moreover, we demonstrate real speedups on multiple hardware platforms.

Thermal fatigue analysis based on 2D finite difference and 3D finite element methods is carried out to study the performance of solar panel structure during micro-satellite life time. Solar panel primary structure consists of honeycomb structure and composite laminates. The 2D finite difference (I-DEAS) model yields predictions of the temperature profile during one orbit. Then, 3D finite element analysis (ANSYS) is applied to predict thermal fatigue damage of solar panel structure. Meshing the whole structure with 2D multi-layer shell elements with sandwich option is not efficient, as it misses thermal response of the honeycomb structure. So we applied a mixed approach between 3D solid and 2D shell elements to model the solar panel structure without the sandwich option.

Mounting accuracy of satellite payload and
ADCS (attitude determination and control subsystem) seats
is one of the requirements to achieve the satellite mission
with satisfactory performance. Deviation of the position of
the mounting seat for Multi-Band-Earth-Imager (MBEI) is
caused by cracks in the plate of the basis unit and bracket
for attachment of MBEI. These cracks were detected during
inspection of the satellite strength mock-up after vibration
testing for air transportation phase. Most probable reason of
the cracking is fatigue damage as strength mock-up
structure was subjected to prolonged vibration loading
during various loading cases. Total vibration duration
during testing is about 56 hours. In order to study the
cracking reasons, finite element modeling of the structural
parts of the basis unit including MBEI bracket and
instrument MBEI is subjected to harmonic response to
simulate vibration loading for the case of air transportation.
Numerical results are compared with the experimental ones,
and mechanical design of the basis-plate unit is modified

The small-satellite thermal subsystem main function is to control temperature ranges on equipments, and payload for the orbit specified. Structure subsystem has to ensure the satellite structure integrity. Structure integrity should meet two constraints; first constraint is accepted fatigue damage due to cyclic temperature, and second one is tolerable mounting accuracy at payload and Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem (ADCS) equipments’ seats. First, thermal analysis is executed by applying finitedifference method (IDEAS) and temperature profile for satellite components case is evaluated. Then, thermal fatigue analysis is performed applying finite-element analysis (ANSYS) to calculate the resultant damage due to on-orbit cyclic stresses, and structure deformations at the payload and ADCS equipments seats.

Mounting accuracy of satellite payload and ADCS (attitude determination and control subsystem) seats is one of the requirements to achieve the satellite mission with acceptable performance. Components of mounting inaccuracy are technological inaccuracies, residual plastic deformations after loading (during transportation and orbital insertion), elastic deformations, and thermal deformations during orbital operation. This paper focuses on estimation of thermal deformations of satellite structure. Thermal analysis is executed by applying finite-difference method (IDEAS) and temperature profile for satellite components case is evaluated. Then, Perform thermal finite-element analysis applying the finite-difference model results as boundary conditions; and calculate the resultant thermal strain. Next, applying the resultant thermal strain, perform finite-element structure analysis to evaluate structure deformations at the payload and ADCS equipments seats.
