Copper-manganese spinel containing anodes were synthesized by a facile sol-gel method and evaluated in lithium-ion battery applications for the first time. The synergistic effects between copper-manganese and the aqueous binder (sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) provided a high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance. It was found that the specific capacity of the copper-manganese spinel remained at 608 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g−1. Furthermore, a relatively high reversible capacity of 278 mAh g−1 could be obtained at a current density of 2000 mA g−1, indicating a good rate capability. These studies suggest that copper-manganese spinel is a promising material for lithium-ion battery applications due to a combination of good electrochemical performance and low cost.

A FORTRAN 90 program is presented which calculates the total cross sections, and the electron energy spectra of the singly and doubly differential cross sections for the single target ionization of neutral atoms ranging from hydrogen up to and including argon. The code is applicable for the case of both high and low Z projectile impact in fast ion-atom collisions. The theoretical models provided for the program user are based on two quantum mechanical approximations which have proved to be very successful in the study of ionization in ion-atom collisions. These are the continuum-distorted-wave (CDW) and continuum-distorted-wave eikonal-initial-state (CDW-EIS) approximations. The codes presented here extend previously published. codes for single ionization of. target hydrogen [Crothers and McCartney, Comput. Phys. Commun. 72 (1992) 288], target helium [Nesbitt, O'Rourke and Crothers, Comput. Phys. Commun. 114 (1998) 385] and target atoms ranging from lithium to neon [O'Rourke, McSherry and Crothers, Comput. Phys. Commun. 131 (2000) 129]. Cross sections for all of these target atoms may be obtained as limiting cases from the present code. The sulfur tolerance of a barium-containing NOx storage/reduction trap was investigated using infrared analysis. It was confirmed that barium carbonate could be replaced by barium sulfate by reaction with low concentrations of sulfur dioxide (50 ppm) in the presence of large concentrations of carbon dioxide (10%) at temperatures up to 700 degreesC. These sulfates could at least be partially removed by switching to hydrogen-rich conditions at elevated temperatures. Thermodynamic calculations were used to evaluate the effects of gas composition and temperature on the various reactions of barium sulfate and carbonate under oxidizing and reducing conditions. These calculations clearly showed that if, under a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, carbon dioxide is included as a reactant and barium carbonate as a product then barium sulfate can be removed by reaction with carbon dioxide at a much lower temperature than is possible by decomposition to barium oxide. It was also found that if hydrogen sulfide was included as a product of decomposition of barium sulfate instead of sulfur dioxide then the temperature of reaction could be significantly lowered. Similar calculations were conducted using a selection of other alkaline-earth and alkali metals. In this case calculations were simulated in a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide with partial pressures similar to those encountered in real exhausts during switches to rich conditions. The results indicated that there are metals such as lithium and strontium with less stable sulfates than barium, which may also possess sufficient NOx storage capacity to give sulfur-tolerant NOx traps.

We report the discovery of a 7.3 M-J exoplanet WASP-14b, one of the most massive transiting exoplanets observed to date. The planet orbits the 10th-magnitude F5V star USNO-B1 11118-0262485 with a period of 2.243 752 d and orbital eccentricity e = 0.09. A simultaneous fit of the transit light curve and radial velocity measurements yields a planetary mass of 7.3 +/- 0.5 M-J and a radius of 1.28 +/- 0.08 R-J. This leads to a mean density of about 4.6 g cm(-3) making it the densest transiting exoplanets yet found at an orbital period less than 3 d. We estimate this system to be at a distance of 160 +/- 20 pc. Spectral analysis of the host star reveals a temperature of 6475 +/- 100 K, log g = 4.07 cm s(-2) and v sin i = 4.9 +/- 1.0 km s(-1), and also a high lithium abundance, log N(Li) = 2.84 +/- 0.05. The stellar density, effective temperature and rotation rate suggest an age for the system of about 0.5-1.0 Gyr.

Detection of Li-6 has been shown for energetic solar events, one chromospherically active binary, and several dwarf halo stars. We had previously found a Li-6/Li-7 = 0.03 +/- 0.01 for active K dwarf GJ 117 using VLT UVES observations. Here we present high signal-to-noise (> 1000) high spectral resolution observations taken with the McDonald Observatory's 2.7 m and echelle spectrometer of GJ 117. We have used the solar spectrum and template stars to eliminate possible blends, such as Ti I, in the Li-6 spectral region. Our new analysis, using an updated PHOENIX model atmosphere, finds Li-6/Li-7 = 0.05 +/- 0.02. In addition, bisector analysis showed no significant red asymmetries that would affect the lithium line profile. No changes above the statistical uncertainties are found between the VLT and McDonald data. The amount of Li-6 derived for GJ 117 is consistent with creation in spallation reactions on the stellar surface, but we caution that uncertainties in the continuum level may cause additional uncertainty in the Li-6 fraction.

Synthesis of the unsym. Homalium alkaloids hopromine (I, R = H, R1 = pentyl), hoprominol (I, R = OH, R1 = pentyl) and hopramalinol (I, R = OH, R1 = Ph), in diastereoisomeric mixt. form, is reported. The component eight-membered azalactams are first prepd. N-(3-halogenopropyl)-4-pentyl- and 4-heptylazetidin-2-ones are aminated and ring expanded in liq. ammonia to give, after reductive methylation, the corresponding 4-alkyl-5-methyl-1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-ones. Synthesis of the 4-(2-hydroxyheptyl)-5-methyl-1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-one required for hoprominol and hopromalinol is carried out via 4-allyl ?-lactam ring expansion to the eight-membered 4-allylazalactam, followed by methylation, epoxidn. and epoxide opening with lithium dibutylcuprate. A similar epoxidn.-cuprate sequence was carried out on the epoxypropyl ?-lactam, as its N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl deriv., and led to a convenient copper-catalyzed N- to O-migration of the protection; this migration is examd. Alkylation gave O-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-protected N-(3-chloropropyl)-4-(2-hydroxyheptyl)azetidin-2-one which could be aminated and transamidated in excellent yield, to give, after methylation, a superior sequence to the required eight-membered hydroxy azalactam. Although satisfactory for attachment of the first azalactam unit, a dibromobutane coupling system proved unreactive for the second. Couplings with unmethylated, methylated, and benzyloxycabronyl-protected azalactams were examd. using (E)-1,4-dibromobutene and (Z)-1,4-dichlorobutene as the bridging unit. Employing the latter, coupling the first N-methylated azalactam with potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide as the base, and then the second with bis(trimethylsilyl)amide-sodium hydride as the base system, provided a satisfactory synthetic outcome. Hydrogenation under acidic conditions gave the unsym. structures hopromine, hoprominol and hopromalinol, as well as the more simple and sym. alkaloid, homaline.

We announce the discovery of a new low-mass, pre-main sequence eclipsing binary, MML 53. Previous observations of MML 53 found it to be a pre-main sequence spectroscopic multiple associated with the 15-22 Myr Upper Centaurus-Lupus cluster. We identify the object as an eclipsing binary for the first time through the analysis of multiple seasons of time series photometry from the SuperWASP transiting planet survey. Re-analysis of a single archive spectrum shows MML 53 to be a spatially unresolved triple system of young stars which all exhibit significant lithium absorption. Two of the components comprise an eclipsing binary with period, P = 2.097891(6) ± 0.000005 and mass ratio, q ~ 0.8. Here, we present the analysis of the discovery data.

BACKGROUND:
Phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) regulation of the Rho-like GTPase Cdc42 has a central role in epithelial polarised growth, but effects of this molecular network on apoptosis remain unclear.
METHODS:
To investigate the role of Cdc42 in PTEN-dependent cell death, we used flow cytometry, in vitro pull-down assays, poly(ADP ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage and other immunoblots in isogenic PTEN-expressing and -deficient colorectal cells (HCT116PTEN(+/+), HCT116PTEN(-/-), Caco2 and Caco2 ShPTEN cells) after transfection or treatment strategies.
RESULTS:
The PTEN knockout or suppression by short hairpin RNA or small interfering RNA (siRNA) inhibited Cdc42 activity, PARP cleavage and/or apoptosis in flow cytometry assays. Transfection of cells with wild-type or constitutively active Cdc42 enhanced PARP cleavage, whereas siRNA silencing of Cdc42 inhibited PARP cleavage and/or apoptosis. Pharmacological upregulation of PTEN by sodium butyrate (NaBt) treatment enhanced Cdc42 activity, PARP cleavage and apoptosis, whereas Cdc42 siRNA suppressed NaBt-induced PARP cleavage. Cdc42-dependent signals can suppress glycogen synthase kinase-ß (GSK3ß) activity. Pharmacological inhibition of GSK3ß by lithium chloride treatment mimicked effects of Cdc42 in promotion of PARP cleavage and/or apoptosis.
CONCLUSION:
Phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 may influence apoptosis in colorectal epithelium through Cdc42 signalling, thus providing a regulatory framework for both polarised growth and programmed cell death.

2-Phosphanylethylcyclopentadienyl lithium compounds, Li[C5R'(4)(CH2)(2)PR2] (R = Et, R' = H or Me, R = Ph, R' = Me), have been prepared from the reaction of spirohydrocarbons C5R'(4)(C2H4) with LiPR2. C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2, was prepared from reaction of Li[C5Et4] with Me2SiCl2 followed by Me2PCH2Li. The lithium salts were reacted with [RhCl(CO)2]2,[IrCl(CO)3] or [Co-2(CO)(8)] to give [M(C5R'(4)(CH2) 2PR2)(CO)] (M = Rh, R = Et, R' = H or Me, R= Ph, R' = Me; M = Ir or Co, R = Et, R' = Me), which have been fully characterised, in many cases crystallographically as monomers with coordination of the phosphorus atom and the cyclopentadienyl ring. The values of nu(CO) for these complexes are usually lower than those for the analogous complexes without the bridge between the cyclopentadienyl ring and the phosphine, the exception being [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (Cp' = C5Me4), the most electron rich of the complexes. [Rh(C5Et4SiMe2CH2PMe2)(CO)] may be a dimer. [Co-2(CO)(8)] reacts with C5H5(CH2)(2)PEt2 or C5Et4HSiMe2CH2PMe2 (L) to give binuclear complexes of the form [Co-2(CO)(6)L-2] with almost linear PCoCoP skeletons. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] and [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] are active for methanol carbonylation at 150 degrees C and 27 bar CO, with the rate using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PPh2)(CO)] (0.81 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) being higher than that for [RhI2(CO)(2)](-) (0.64 mol dm(-3) h(-1)). The most electron rich complex, [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)] (0.38 mol dm(-3) h(-1)) gave a comparable rate to [Cp*Rh(PEt3)(CO)] (0.30 mol dm(-3) h(-1)), which was unstable towards oxidation of the phosphine. [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)I-2], which is inactive for methanol carbonylation, was isolated after the methanol carbonylation reaction using [Rh(Cp'(CH2)(2)PEt2)(CO)].

For a better understanding of the adsorption behavior of alkylcarbonate-based electrolytes on graphite electrodes and Celgard separator for Li-ion batteries applications, the interface parameters are determined by contact angle and surface tension measurements. The correlation between these parameters and chemical compositions made of alkyl carbonate with a varying nature of lithium salts (LiPF6 and LiTFSI) and volume fractions of binary and ternary mixtures containing propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is investigated. From the obtained contact angle and surface tension (?L) values for each liquid, the dispersive and polar components of the surface tension (?Ld and ?Lp) of the electrolyte and interfacial free energy between the solid and liquid (?SL) were then calculated using the Young’s equation. The variation of contact angle (?) and the surface tension, as well as the work of adhesion (WA) of binary PC/DMC mixtures on PP, PE, and PET model surfaces were also measured and commented as function of volume fraction of PC in DMC. Finally, the Zisman’s critical surface tension (?C) for studied surfaces was then obtained showing positives slopes of cos ? versus ?L. This behavior is explained by a relative higher adsorption of alkylcarbonates to the hydrogenated supports or graphite. These results are decisive to understand the performance of electrolyte/electrode material/separator interfaces in lithium-ion battery devices.

We present in this work a comparative study on density and transport properties, such as the conductivity (sigma), viscosity (eta) and self-diffusion coefficients (D), for electrolytes based on the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; or on the lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorophosphate, LiFAP dissolved in a binary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) (50:50 wt%). For each electrolyte, the temperature dependence on transport properties over a temperature range from 10 to 80 degrees C and 20 to 70 degrees C for viscosity and conductivity, respectively, exhibits a non-Arrhenius behavior. However, this dependence is correctly correlated by using the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) type fitting equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy and ideal glass transition temperature were then extracted. The self-diffusion coefficients (D) of the Li+ cation and PF6- or FAP(-) anions species, in each studied electrolyte, were then independently determined by observing Li-3, F-19 and P-31 nuclei with the pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR technique over the same temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. Results show that even if the diffusion of the lithium cation is quite similar in both electrolytes, the anions diffusion differs notably. In the case of the LiPF6-based electrolyte, for example at T approximate to 75 degrees C (high temperature), the self-diffusion coefficients of Li+ cations in solution (D (Li+)approximate to 5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)) is 1.6 times smaller than that of PF6- anions (D (PF6-) = 8.5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)), whereas in the case of the LiFAP-based electrolyte, FAP(-) anions diffuse at same rate as the Li+ cations (D (FAP(-)) = 5 x 10(-1) m(2) s(-1)). Based on these experimental results, the transport mobility of ions were then investigated through Stokes-Einstein and Nernst-Einstein equations to determine the transport number of lithium t(Li)(+), effective radius of solvated Li+ and of PF6- and FAP(-) anions, and the degree of dissociation of these lithium salts in the selected EC/DMC (50:50 wt%) mixture over a the temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. This study demonstrates the conflicting nature of the requirements and the advantage of the well-balanced properties as ionic mobility and dissociation constant of the selected electrolytes. Scanning probe microscopy methods have been used to electrodeposit and cycle micron-scale Li anodes deposited electrochemically under nanofabricated Au current collectors. An average Li volume of 5 x 10(8) nm(3) was deposited and cycled with 100% coulombic efficiency for similar to 160 cycles. Integrated charge/discharge values agree with before/after topography, as well as in situ dilatometry, suggesting this is a reliable method to study solid-state electrochemical processes. In this work we illustrate the possibility to deposit highly cyclable nanometer thick Li electrodes by mature SPM and nanofab techniques which can pave the way for inexpensive nanoscale battery arrays.

Wound healing, angiogenesis and hair follicle maintenance are often impaired in the skin of diabetic patients, but the pathogenesis has not been well understood. Here, we report that circulation levels of kallistatin, a member of the serine proteinase inhibitor (SERPIN) superfamily with anti-angiogenic activities, were elevated in Type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic vascular complications. To test the hypothesis that elevated kallistatin levels could contribute to a wound healing deficiency via inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, we generated kallistatin-transgenic (KS-TG) mice. KS-TG mice had reduced cutaneous hair follicle density, microvascular density, and panniculus adiposus layer thickness as well as altered skin microvascular hemodynamics and delayed cutaneous wound healing. Using Wnt reporter mice, our results showed that Wnt/β-catenin signaling is suppressed in dermal endothelium and hair follicles in KS-TG mice. Lithium, a known activator of β-catenin via inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3β, reversed the inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling by kallistatin and rescued the wound healing deficiency in KS-TG mice. These observations suggest that elevated circulating anti-angiogenic serpins in diabetic patients may contribute to impaired wound healing through inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, at a level downstream of Wnt receptors, may ameliorate the wound healing deficiency in diabetic patients.Journal of Investigative Dermatology accepted article preview online, 24 January 2014. doi:10.1038/jid.2014.40.

We report on differential etching behavior of the different orientations of the polarization in BiFeO3 (BFO), similar to other ferroelectrics, such as LiNbO3. We show how this effect can be used to fabricate epitaxial BiFeO3 nanostructures. By means of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) domains of arbitrary shape and size can be poled in an epitaxial BiFeO3 film, which are then reproduced in the film morphology by differential etching. Structures with a lateral size smaller than 200 nm were fabricated and very good retention properties as well as a highly increased piezoelectric response were detected by PFM.
