Simulations of the injection stretch-blow moulding process have been developed for the manufacture of poly(ethylene terephthalate) bottles using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS/standard. Initially a simulation of the manufacture of a 330 mL bottle was developed with three different material models (hyperelastic, creep, and a non-linear viscoelastic model (Buckley model)) to ascertain their suitability for modelling poly(ethylene terephthalate). The Buckley model was found to give results for the sidewall thickness that matched best with those measured from bottles off the production line. Following the investigation of the material models, the Buckley model was chosen to conduct a three-dimensional simulation of the manufacture of a 2 L bottle. It was found that the model was also capable of predicting the wall thickness distribution accurately for this bottle. In the development of the three-dimensional simulation a novel approach, which uses an axisymmetric model until the material reaches the petaloid base, was developed. This resulted in substantial savings in computing time. © 2000 IoM Communication Ltd.

The methane solubility in five pure electrolyte solvents and one binary solvent mixture for lithium ion batteries â such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), diethyl carbonate (DEC) and the (50:50 wt%) mixture of EC:DMC was studied experimentally at pressures close to atmospheric and as a function of temperature between (280 and 343) K by using an isochoric saturation technique. The effect of the selected anions of a lithium salt LiX (X = hexafluorophosphate,
<img height="16" border="0" style="vertical-align:bottom" width="27" alt="View the MathML source" title="View the MathML source" src="http://origin-ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-S0021961414002146-si1.gif">PF6-; tris(pentafluoroethane)trifluorurophosphate, FAPâˆ; bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, TFSIâˆ) on the methane solubility in electrolytes for lithium ion batteries was then investigated using a model electrolyte based on the binary mixture of EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dmâˆ3 of lithium salt in the same temperature and pressure ranges. Based on experimental solubility data, the Henryâs law constant of the methane in these solutions were then deduced and compared together and with those predicted by using COSMO-RS methodology within COSMOthermX software. From this study, it appears that the methane solubility in each pure solvent decreases with the temperature and increases in the following order: EC < PC < EC:EMC (50:50 wt%) < DMC < EMC < DEC, showing that this increases with the van der Walls force in solution. Additionally, in all investigated EC:DMC (50:50 wt%) + 1 mol · dmâˆ3 of lithium salt electrolytes, the methane solubility decreases also with the temperature and the methane solubility is higher in the electrolyte containing the LiFAP salt, followed by that based on the LiTFSI one. From the variation of the Henryâs law constants with the temperature, the partial molar thermodynamic functions of solvation, such as the standard Gibbs free energy, the enthalpy, and the entropy where then calculated, as well as the mixing enthalpy of the solvent with methane in its hypothetical liquid state. Finally, the effect of the gas structure on their solubility in selected solutions was discussed by comparing methane solubility data reported in the present work with carbon dioxide solubility data available in the same solvents or mixtures to discern the more harmful gas generated during the degradation of the electrolyte, which limits the battery lifetime.

A series of supramolecular aggregates were prepared using a poly(propylene oxide) poly(ethylene oxide) poly(propylene oxide) (PPO-PEO-PPO) block copolymer and beta- or alpha-cyclodextrins (CD). The combination of beta-CD and the copolymer yields inclusion complexes (IC) with polypseudorotaxane structures. These are formed by complexation of the PPO blocks with beta-CD molecules producing a powder precipitate with a certain crystallinity degree that can be evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). In contrast, when combining alpha-CD with the block copolymer, the observed effect is an increase in the viscosity of the mixtures, yielding fluid gels. Two cooperative effects come into play: the complexation of PEO blocks with alpha-CD and the hydrophobic interactions between PPO blocks in aqueous media. These two combined interactions lead to the formation of a macromoleculaf network. The resulting fluid gels were characterized using different techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry, and XRD measurements.

The phase behavior of two types of poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) copolymers in aqueous solutions was studied by light scattering, viscometry, and infrared spectroscopy. Both the reverse poloxamer (Pluronic 10R5) and the star type poloxamine (Tetronic 90R4) have practically the same PEO/PPO ratio with their hydrophobic blocks (PPO) located in the outer part. The temperature-composition phase diagrams show that both 10R5 and 90R4 tend to form aggregates in water. Up to four different phases can be detected in the case of Tetronic 90R4 for each temperature: unimers, random networks, micellar networks, and macrophase separation. Viscometric and infrared measurements complemented the results obtained by light scattering and visual inspection.

Different types of gels were prepared by combining poloxamines (Tetronic), i.e. poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(propylene oxide) (PEO/PPO) octablock star copolymers, and cyclodextrins (CD). Two different poloxamines with the same molecular weight (ca. 7000) but different molecular architectures were used. For each of their four diblock arms, direct Tetronic 904 presents PEO outer blocks while in reverse Tetronic 90R4 the hydrophilic PEO blocks are the inner ones. These gels were prepared by combining alpha-CD and poloxamine aqueous solutions. The physicochemical properties of these systems depend on several factors such as the structure of the block copolymers and the Tetronic/alpha-CD ratio. These gels were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), viscometry and X-ray diffraction measurements. The 90R4 gels present a consistency that makes them suitable for sustained drug delivery. The resulting gels were easily eroded: these complexes were dismantled when placed in a large amount of water, so controlled release of entrapped large molecules such as proteins (Bovine Serum Albumin, BSA) is feasible and can be tuned by varying the copolymer/CD ratio.

This work provides a study of mixtures of the azepanium-based ionic liquid (IL) N-methyl, N-butyl-azepanium bis[(trifluoromethane) sulfonyl]imide (Azp14TFSI) and propylene carbonate (PC) as electrolyte components in electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). The considered mixtures' properties were then compared to the properties of mixtures of N-butyl, N-methylpyrrolidinium bis[(trifluoromethane) sulfonyl]imide (Pyr14TFSI) and PC in terms of viscosity, conductivity and electrochemical behavior. The mixtures' operative potentials were found to be comparable to each other, leading to operative voltages as high as 3.5 V, while retaining the low viscosities and high conductivities of PC based EDLC electrolytes.

Transition metals are often introduced to a catalyst as promoters to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we study the promotion effect of transition metals on Co, the preferred catalytic metal for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis because of its good compromise of activity, selectivity and stability, for ethylene chemisorption using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, aiming to provide some insight into improving the alpha-olefin selectivity. In order to obtain the general trend of influence on ethylene chemisorption, twelve transition metals (Zr, Mn, Re, Ru, Rh, It, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au) are calculated. We find that the late transition metals (e.g. Pd and Cu) can decrease ethylene chemisorption energy. These results suggest that the addition of the late transition metals may improve alpha-olefin selectivity. Electronic structure analyses (both charge density distributions and density of states) are also performed and the understanding of calculated results is presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V.
A comparative study between a classic and a wireless electrochemical promotion experiment was undertaken as a tool towards the better understanding of both systems. The catalytic modification of a platinum catalyst for ethylene oxidation was studied. The catalyst was supported on yttria-stabilised-zirconia (YSZ), a known pure oxide ion conductor, for the classic experiment and La 0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O 3-δ-a mixed oxide ion electronic conductor-was used for the wireless experiment. The two systems showed certain similarities in terms of the reaction classification (in both cases electrophobic behaviour was observed) and the promotion mechanism. Significant difference was observed in the time scales and the reversibility of the induced rate modification. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

This paper investigates the effects of polyethylene glycol (PEG), on the mechanical and thermal properties of nalidixic acid/ploy ε-caprolactone (NA)/PCL blends prepared by hot melt extrusion. The blends were characterized by tensile and flexural analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction. Experimental data indicated that the addition of NA caused loss of the tensile strength and toughness of PCL. Thermal analysis of the PCL showed that on addition of the thermally unstable NA, thermal degradation occurred early and was autocatalytic. However, the NA did benefit from the heat shielding provided by the PCL matrix resulting in more thermally stable NA particles. Results show that loading PEG in the PCL had a detrimental effect on the tensile strength and toughness of the blends, reducing them by 20-40%. The partial miscibility of the PCL-PEG system, causes an increase in Tg. While increases in the crystallinity is attributed to the plasticisation effect of PEG and the nucleation effect of NA. The average crystal size increased by 8% upon PEG addition.

This paper highlights for the first time a full comprehension of the deformation procedure during the injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) process of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) containers, namely thin-walled rigid bottles. The processes required to form PET bottles are complicated and extensive; any development in understanding the nature of material deformation can potentially improve the bottle optimisation process. Removing the bottle mould and performing free-stretch-blow (FSB) experiments revealed insight into the bottle forming characteristics at various preform temperatures and blowing rates. Process outputs cavity pressure and stretch-rod force were recorded using at instrumented stretch-rod and preform surface strain mapping was determined using a combination of a unique patterning procedure and high speed stereoscopic digital image correlation. The unprecedented experimental analysis reveals that the deformation behaviour varies considerably with contrasting process input parameters. Investigation into the effect on deformation mode, strain rate and final bottle shape provide a basis for full understanding of the process optimisation and therefore how the process inputs may aid development of the preferred optimised container.
