Research has focused on in vitro expansion of bone marrow stromal cells with the aim of developing cell-based therapies or tissue-engineered constructs. There is debate over whether there is a reduction in stem cells/osteoprogenitors in the bone marrow compartment with increasing age. The aim of this study was to investigate patient factors that affect the progenitor pool in bone marrow samples. Six milliliters of marrow aspirate was obtained from the femoral canal of 38 primary hip replacement patients (aged 28-91). Outcome measures were total nucleated cell count, colony-forming efficiency, alkaline phosphatase expression, and expression of stem cell markers. There was a nonsignificant negative correlation between age and both colony-forming efficiency and stem cell marker expression. However, body mass index showed a positive, significant correlation with colony area and number in men-accounting for up to 75% of the variation. In conclusion, body mass index, not age, was highly predictive of the number of progenitors found in bone marrow, and this relationship was sex specific. These results may inform the clinician's treatment choice when considering bone marrow-based therapies. Further, it highlights the need to widen research into patient factors that affect the adult stem cell population beyond age and reinforces the need to consider sexes separately.

Background: Recent research has questioned the reliability and validity of the Nursing Work Index-Revised (NWI-R) instrument, raising the possibility that managers reconfiguring hospitals in line with the factors derived from the NWI-R may be misdirecting resources.

We investigate the nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic waves in left-handed materials. For this purpose, we consider a set of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger (CNLS) equations, which govern the dynamics of coupled electric and magnetic field envelopes. The CNLS equations are used to obtain a nonlinear dispersion, which depicts the modulational stability profile of the coupled plane-wave solutions in left-handed materials. An exact (in)stability criterion for modulational interactions is derived, and analytical expressions for the instability growth rate are obtained.

We report the discovery of a transiting planet orbiting the star TYC 6446-326-1. The star, WASP-22, is a moderately bright (V = 12.0) solar-type star (Teff = 6000 ± 100 K, [Fe/H] = -0.05 ± 0.08). The light curve of the star obtained with the WASP-South instrument shows periodic transit-like features with a depth of about 1% and a duration of 0.14 days. The presence of a transit-like feature in the light curve is confirmed using z-band photometry obtained with Faulkes Telescope South. High-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the CORALIE and HARPS spectrographs confirms the presence of a planetary mass companion with an orbital period of 3.533 days in a near-circular orbit. From a combined analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric data assuming that the star is a typical main-sequence star we estimate that the planet has a mass M p = 0.56 ± 0.02M Jup and a radius R p = 1.12 ± 0.04R Jup. In addition, there is a linear trend of 40 m s-1 yr-1 in the radial velocities measured over 16 months, from which we infer the presence of a third body with a long-period orbit in this system. The companion may be a low mass M-dwarf, a white dwarf, or a second planet.

The purpose of this article is twofold. First, we introduce a novel definition of financial networks obtained from time series data from the stock market. Second, we demonstrate that these networks can be used as an index with the property to reflect critical states of the market, respectively, crashes sufficiently. Our work aims to advocate a network-based analysis in the context of the stock market, because such a collective phenomenon can not only be economically described by networks but also analyzed as demonstrated in this article. Densities ([rho]) and viscosities ([eta]) of binary mixtures containing the Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL), pyrrolidinium octanoate with five molecular solvents: water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, and acetonitrile are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature and within the whole composition range. The refractive index of all mixtures (nD) is measured at 298.15†K. The excess molar volumes VE and deviation from additivity rules of viscosities [eta]E and refractive index [Delta][phi]n, of pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions were then deduced from the experimental results as well as apparent molar volumes V[phi]i, partial molar volumes and thermal expansion coefficients [alpha]p. The excess molar volumes VE are negative over the entire mole fraction range for mixture with water, acetonitrile, and methanol indicating strong hydrogen-bonding interaction for the entire mole fraction. In the case of longest carbon chain alcohols (such as ethanol and n-butanol)†+†pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions, the VE variation as a function of the composition describes an S shape. The deviation from additivity rules of viscosities is negative over the entire composition range for the acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, and butanol, and becomes less negative with increasing temperature. Whereas, [eta]E of the {[Pyrr][C7CO2]†+†water} binary mixtures is positive in the whole mole fraction range and decreases with increasing temperature. the excess Gibbs free energies of activation of viscous flow ([Delta]G*E) for these systems were calculated. The deviation from additivity rules of refractive index [Delta][phi]n are positive over the whole composition range and approach a maximum of 0.25 in PIL mole fraction for all systems. The magnitude of deviation for [Delta][phi]n describes the following order: water†>†methanol†>†acetonitrile†>†ethanol. Results have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures.
