The structure of a Pt(111) electrode after treatment in an electrolyte and subsequent transfer to an UHV chamber was investigated ex situ by combined low energy electron diffraction (LEED), reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Treatment of the sample in a CO saturated 0.1 M HClO solution at potentials between -0.2 and 0.2 V versus Ag/AgCl caused a maximum CO coverage of about 0.75 as probed by cyclic voltammetry, which dropped by partial desorption to about 0.25 upon transfer to the UHV chamber. This adlayer exhibited a (distorted) 3×3 R30° pattern by RHEED (but not with LEED) exhibiting an average domain size of 2.3 nm at room temperature. This is identified with the same phase reported before from gas phase studies, as also corroborated by the similarities of the vibrational spectroscopic data. The same structure (albeit even more poorly ordered) was found after dissociative adsorption of methanol.

The adsorption and electro-oxidation of formaldehyde, formic acid and methanol at the Ru(0001) electrode in perchloric acid solution have been studied as a function of temperature, potential and time using in situ FTIR spectroscopy, and the results interpreted in terms of the surface chemistry of the Ru(0001) electrode and compared to those obtained during our previous studies on the adsorption of CO under the same conditions. It was found that no dissociative adsorption or electro-oxidation of methanol takes place at Ru(0001) at potentials 1000 mV, both the oxidation of formic acid to CO and the oxidation of formaldehyde to both CO and formic acid were significantly increased, and the oxidation of methanol to CO and methyl formate was observed, all of which were attributed to the formation of an active RuO phase on the Ru(0001) surface.

An anode structure based on Ti mesh has been developed for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This new anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition of a ~ 3 µ m PtRu catalyst layer on ~ 50 µ m Ti mesh. It has a thinner structure compared to that of a porous carbon-based conventional anode. The Ti mesh anode shows a performance comparable to, and exceeding that, of the conventional anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen at 90 C. However, it shows a lower performance of the cell when higher concentrations of methanol was employed. This may be attributed to its thin and open structure, which could facilitate the transport of methanol from the flow field to the anode catalyst layer and carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. © 2006 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

The acidic properties of nanolayered ZSM-5 zeolites synthesized with the aid of multiquaternary ammonium surfactants were investigated in detail. A substantial fraction of Al is present in highly dispersed form at extraframework positions indicative of the defective nature of the calcined nanolayered zeolites. Acidity characterization reveals that the Brønsted acid sites are similar in strength to those in bulk HZSM-5. Nanolayered zeolites contain a higher amount of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) at their external (mesopore) surface. Unilamellar zeolites have a higher concentration of external BA and silanol sites than multilamellar ones. The number of BAS in the nanolayered zeolites is considerably lower than the tetrahedral Al content, the difference increasing with nanolayer thickness. Except for one particular sample (nanolayered ZSM-5 synthesized from COH template), the total turnover of methanol normalized per BAS trends inversely with the concentration of BAS. There is no correlation with the concentration of external BAS. Catalyst deactivation due to coke mainly depends on the BAS concentration. A unilamellar ZSM-5 zeolite prepared using COH displayed substantially improved performance in terms of a much lower rate of coke deactivation in line with earlier data Choi et al. [10]. Since the acidic and textural properties of this zeolite did not differ significantly from the others, it remains to be determined why this zeolite performs so much better. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Biomass pyrolysis is an efficient way to transform raw biomass or organic waste materials into useable energy, including liquid, solid, and gaseous materials. Levoglucosan (1,6-anhydro-β-d-glucopyranose) and formaldehyde are two important products in biomass pyrolysis. The formation mechanism of these two products was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) method based on quantum mechanics. It was found that active anhydroglucose can be obtained from a cellulose homolytic reaction during high-temperature steam gasification of the biomass process. Anhydroglucose undergoes a hydrogen-donor reaction and forms an intermediate, which can transform into the products via three pathways, one (path 1) for the formation of levoglucosan and two (paths 2 and 3) for formaldehyde. A total of six elementary reactions are involved. At a pressure of 1 atm, levoglucosan can be formed at all of the temperatures (450-750 K) considered in this simulation, whereas formaldehyde can be formed only when the temperature is higher than 475 K. Moreover, the energy barrier of levoglucosan formation is lower than that of formaldehyde, which is in agreement with the mechanism proposed in the experiments. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

In exploration of low-cost electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), Pt modified tungsten carbide (WC) materials are found to be great potential candidates for decreasing Pt usage whilst exhibiting satisfactory reactivity. In this work, the mechanisms, onset potentials and activity for electrooxidation of methanol were studied on a series of Pt-modified WC catalysts where the bare W-terminated WC(0001) substrate was employed. In the surface energy calculations of a series of Pt-modified WC models, we found that the feasible structures are mono- and bi-layer Pt-modified WCs. The tri-layer Pt-modified WC model is not thermodynamically stable where the top layer Pt atoms tend to accumulate and form particles or clusters rather than being dispersed as a layer. We further calculated the mechanisms of methanol oxidation on the feasible models via methanol dehydrogenation to CO involving C-H and O-H bonds dissociating subsequently, and further CO oxidation with the C-O bond association. The onset potentials for the oxidation reactions over the Pt-modified WC catalysts were determined thermodynamically by water dissociation to surface OH* species. The activities of these Pt-modified WC catalysts were estimated from the calculated kinetic data. It has been found that the bi-layer Pt-modified WC catalysts may provide a good reactivity and an onset oxidation potential comparable to pure Pt and serve as promising electrocatalysts for DMFCs with a significant decrease in Pt usage.

The mono(μ-oxo) dicopper cores present in the pores of Cu-ZSM-5 are active for the partial oxidation of methane to methanol. However, copper on the external surface reduces the ratio of active, selective sites to unselective sites. More efficient catalysts are obtained by controlling the copper deposition during synthesis. Herein, the external exchange sites of ZSM-5 samples were passivated by bis(trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA) followed by calcination, promoting selective deposition of intraporous copper during aqueous copper ion exchange. At an optimum level of 1–2 wt % SiO2, IR studies showed a 64 % relative reduction in external copper species and temperature-programmed oxidation analysis showed an associated increase in the formation of methanol compared with unmodified Cu-ZSM-5 samples. It is, therefore, reported that the modified zeolites contained a significantly higher proportion of active, selective copper species than their unmodified counterparts with activity for partial methane oxidation to methanol.

Toward the starburst nucleus of NGC 253, C-12/C-13 line intensity ratios from six carbon bearing molecules (CO, CN, CS, HCN, HCO+, and HNC) are used to confine the possible range of carbon and oxygen isotope ratios. A detailed analysis yields C-12/C-13 approximately 40 and O-16/O-18 approximately 200. Also reported are first detections of (CS)-C-13 and of the 0(0) - 1(-1) E line of methanol (CH3OH) in an extragalactic source.

The oxidation of trimethoxymethane (TMM) (trimethyl orthoformate) in a direct oxidation PBI fuel cell was examined by on-line mass spectroscopy and on-line FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that TMM was almost completely hydrolyzed in a direct oxidation fuel cell which employs an acid doped polymer electrolyte to form a mixture of methylformate, methanol and formic acid. It also found that TMM was hydrolyzed in the presence of water at 120°C even without acidic catalyst. The anode performance improves in the sequence of methanol, TMM, formic acid/methanol, and methylformate solutions. Since formic acid is electrochemically more active than methanol, these results suggest that formic acid is probably a key factor for the improvement of the anode performance by using TMM instead of methanol under these conditions. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Although the use of ball milling to induce reactions between solids (mechanochemical synthesis) can provide lower-waste routes to chemical products by avoiding solvent during the reaction, there are further potential advantages in using one-pot multistep syntheses to avoid the use of bulk solvents for the purification of intermediates. We report here two-step syntheses involving formation of salen-type ligands from diamines and hydroxyaldehydes followed directly by reactions with metal salts to provide the corresponding metal complexes. Five salen-type ligands 2,2'-[1,2-ethanediylbis[(E)-nitrilomethylidyne]] bisphenol, ` salenH2', 1; 2,2'-[(+/-)-1,2-cyclohexanediylbis-[(E)-nitrilomethylidyne]] bis-phenol, 2; 2,2'-[1,2-phenylenebis( nitrilomethylidyne)]-bis-phenol, ` salphenH2' 3; 2-[[(2-aminophenyl) imino] methyl]-phenol, 4; 2,2'-[(+/-)-1,2-cyclohexanediylbis[(E)-nitrilomethylidyne]]-bis[4,6-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)]-phenol, ` Jacobsen ligand', 5) were found to form readily in a shaker-type ball mill at 0.5 to 3 g scale from their corresponding diamine and aldehyde precursors. Although in some cases both starting materials were liquids, ball milling was still necessary to drive those reactions to completion because precipitation of the product and or intermediates rapidly gave in thick pastes which could not be stirred conventionally. The only ligand which required the addition of solvent was the Jacobsen ligand 5 which required 1.75 mol equivalents of methanol to go to completion. Ligands 1-5 were thus obtained directly in 30-60 minutes in their hydrated forms, due to the presence of water by-product, as free-flowing yellow powders which could be dried by heating to give analytically pure products. The one-armed salphen ligand 4 could also be obtained selectively by changing the reaction stoichiometry to 1 : 1. SalenH(2) 1 was explored for the onepot two-step synthesis of metal complexes. In particular, after in situ formation of the ligand by ball milling, metal salts (ZnO, Ni(OAc)2 center dot 4H(2)O or Cu(OAc)(2)center dot H2O) were added directly to the jar and milling continued for a further 30 minutes. Small amounts of methanol (0.4-1.1 mol equivalents) were needed for these reactions to run to completion. The corresponding metal complexes [M(salen)] (M = Zn, 6; Ni, 7; or Cu, 8) were thus obtained quantitatively after 30 minutes in hydrated form, and could be heated briefly to give analytically pure dehydrated products. The all-at-once ` tandem' synthesis of [Zn(salen)] 6 was also explored by milling ZnO, ethylene diamine and salicylaldehyde together in the appropriate mole ratio for 60 minutes. This approach also gave the target complex selectively with no solvent needing to be added. Overall, these syntheses were found to be highly efficient in terms of time and the in avoidance of bulk solvent both during the reaction and for the isolation of intermediates. The work demonstrates the applicability of mechanochemical synthesis to one-pot multi-step strategies.

The conversion of biomass for the production of liquid fuels can help reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are predominantly generated by the combustion of fossil fuels. Oxymethylene ethers (OMEs) are a series of liquid fuel additives that can be obtained from syngas, which is produced from the gasification of biomass. The blending of OMEs in conventional diesel fuel can reduce soot formation during combustion in a diesel engine. In this research, a process for the production of OMEs from woody biomass has been simulated. The process consists of several unit operations including biomass gasifi- cation, syngas cleanup, methanol production, and conversion of methanol to OMEs. The methodology involved the development of process models, the identification of the key process parameters affecting OME production based on the process model, and the development of an optimal process design for high OME yields. It was found that up to 9.02 tonnes day1 of OME3, OME4, and OME5 (which are suitable as diesel additives) can be produced from 277.3 tonnes day1 of wet woody biomass. Furthermore, an optimal combination of the parameters, which was generated from the developed model, can greatly enhance OME production and thermodynamic efficiency. This model can further be used in a techno- economic assessment of the whole biomass conversion chain to produce OMEs. The results of this study can be helpful for petroleum-based fuel producers and policy makers in determining the most attractive pathways of converting bio-resources into liquid fuels.
