The design, fabrication, and characterization of single-screen perturbed frequency-selective surfaces (FSS) at infrared frequencies for single and multiband applications are reported. Single-band FSS based on parallel strips have been perturbed by decreasing the length of every second strip within the array in order to achieve dual band-stop responses. The same principle has been extended to design FSS exhibiting tri- and quadreflection bands. In addition, strip FSSs have been perturbed by replacing every second strip for a metallic ring, resulting in dual-band filters with different polarization responses of the bands. These designs have been fabricated on large thin polyimide membranes using sacrificial silicon wafers. An oxide interlayer between the sacrificial silicon wafer and the polyimide membrane is employed to stop the silicon etching and is wet etched subsequently by a solution of ammonium fluoride and acetic acid that does not attack either the polyimide membrane or the aluminium FSS elements. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements are presented to validate the predicted responses of the fabricated prototypes.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based biosensor technology has been widely used in life science research for many applications. While the advantages of speed, ruggedness, versatility, sensitivity and reproducibility are often quoted, many researchers have experienced severe problem of non-specific binding (NSB) to chip surfaces when performing analysis of biological samples Such as bovine serum. Using the direct measurement of the bovine protein leptin, present in bovine serum samples as a model, a unique buffering system has been developed and optimised which was able to significantly reduce the non-specific interactions of bovine serum components with the carboxymethyl dextran chip (CM5) surface on a Biacore SPR The developed NSB buffering system comprised of HBS-EP buffer, containing 0.5 M NaCl, 0.005% CM-dextran pH 9.0. An average NSB reduction (n = 20) of 85.9% and 87.3% was found on an unmodified CM5 surface and a CM5 with bovine leptin immobilised on the chip surface, respectively. A reduction in NSB of up to 94% was observed on both surfaces. The concentration of the constitutive components and pH of the buffer were crucial in achieving this outcome. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Silicone elastomer systems have been shown to offer potential for the fabrication of medical devices and sustained release drug delivery devices comprising low molecular weight drugs and protein therapeutics. For drug delivery systems in particular, there is often no clear rationale for selection of the silicone elastomer grade, particularly in respect of optimizing the manufacturing conditions to ensure thermal stability of the active agent and short cycle times. In this study, the cure characteristics of a range of addition-cure and condensation-cure, low-consistency, implant-grade silicone elastomers, either as supplied or loaded with the model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the model hydrophilic excipient glycine, were investigated using oscillatory rheology with a view to better understanding the isothermal cure characteristics. The results demonstrate the influence of elastomer type, cure temperature, protein loading, and glycine loading on isothermal cure properties. By measuring the cure time required to achieve tan delta values representative of early and late-stage cure conditions, a ratio t(1)/t(2) was defined that allowed the cure characteristics of the various systems to be compared. Sustained in vitro release of BSA from glycine-loaded silicone elastomer covered rod devices was also demonstrated over 14 days. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Multiresonant high impedance surfaces (HIS) without grounding vias that perform as artificial magnetic conductors (AMC) in multiple frequency bands and furthermore exhibit electromagnetic band gaps (EBG) in the same bands are presented. This is achieved by introducing perturbed frequency selective surface (FSS) arrays printed on grounded dielectric substrates. Arrays of linear dipoles are employed as an example. Perturbations are introduced by means of reducing the length of every other array element. Starting from the characteristics of a perturbed free-standing FSS, the authors present the effect of the perturbation on the excited currents and on the reflection properties of a corresponding AMC. Conclusions about the performance limitations are derived. Subsequently, a parametric study on practical HIS is presented and an optimised design with dual-band AMC and EBG response is demonstrated. Method of moments-based software has been developed and utilised for the fast and accurate analysis of such arrays. Experimental results validate the performance of the optimised structure.

This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010.
