Comparisons between experimentally measured time-dependent electron energy distribution functions and optical emission intensities are reported for low-frequency (100 and 400 kHz) radio-frequency driven discharges in argon. The electron energy distribution functions were measured with a time-resolved Langmuir probe system. Time-resolved optical emissions of argon resonance lines at 687.1 and 750.4 nm were determined by photon-counting methods. Known ground-state and metastable-state excitation cross sections were used along with the measured electron energy distribution functions to calculate the time dependence of the optical emission intensity. It was found that a calculation using only the ground-state cross sections gave the best agreement with the time dependence of the measured optical emission. Time-dependent electron density, electron temperature, and plasma potential measurements are also reported.

Wearable antenna performance measurements were used to characterize a synthetic variable layered phantom testbed, representative of human tissue for operation in the 868/915 MHz, and 2400 MHz industrial, scientific and medical frequency bands. Antenna radiation efficiency measurements on the phantom were compared with measurements on the thorax region of a human test subject. The results show that the phantom is representative of the human body for the application of wireless vital sign monitors, where conductive connections are made to the tissue.

The fluorophore-spacer1-receptor1-spacer2-receptor2 system (where receptor2 alone is photoredox-inactive) shows ionically tunable proton-induced fluorescence off-on switching, which is reminiscent of thermionic triode behavior. This also represents a new extension to modular switch systems based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) towards the emulation of analogue electronic devices.

Following a brief introduction to the principle of fluorescent PET (photoinduced electron transfer) sensors and switches, the outputs of laboratories in various countries from the past year or two are categorized and critically discussed. Emphasis is placed on the molecular design and the experimental outcomes in terms of target-induced fluorescence enhancements and input/output wavelengths. The handling of single targets takes up a major fraction of the review, but the extension to multiple targets is also illustrated. Conceptually new channels of investigation are opened up by the latter approach, e.g. ‘lab-on-a-molecule’ systems and molecular keypad locks. The growing trends of theoretically-fortified design and intracellular application are pointed out.

A novel approach to the modelling of passive intermodulation (PIM) generation in passive components with distributed weak nonlinearities is outlined. Based upon the formalism of X-parameters, it provides a unified framework for co-design of antenna beamforming networks, filters, combiners, phase shifters and other passive and active devices containing nonlinearities at RF front-end. The effects of discontinuities and complex circuit layouts can be efficiently evaluated with the aid of the equivalent networks of the canonical nonlinear elements. The main concepts are illustrated by examples of numerical simulations of PIM generation in the transmission lines and comparison with the measurement results.

Photoresponsive oligonucleotides (ONs) incorporating isoxazole-linked azobenzene (AB) moieties were prepared by resin-supported nitrile oxide-alkyne cycloaddition (NOAC) chemistry. The thermal and photochromic properties of the modified ONs were significantly influenced by the extent of pi-conjugation between the isoxazole and the AB modules.
