In this research, we have investigated the effects of addition of different percentages of nanoclay to the ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) on the characteristics of these rubbers as seal material. Properties such as tensile strength, modulus at different extensions, elongation at break, compressive set, hardness, and permeability and abrasion resistance are tested to assess the effect of addition of the nanoclay. Results indicate that addition of nanoclay at certain compositions could slightly reduce the strength of the rubber. However more stable modulus at different strains are provided, the hardness of the rubber is preserved and slightly enhanced, the permeability is reduced in both rubbers especially considerable decrease in EPDM is observed which is desirable in diminishing the effect of explosive decompression. At the same time the compression test shows that the nanoclay improves the performance of the rubbers under compression which is essential in seal application. The X-ray diffraction tests clarify that the dispersion of the nanoclay in the NBR samples is of high quality. In the EPDM samples, the dispersion is in need of improvement. POLYM. Unlike other BCC metals, the plastic deformation of nanocrystalline Tantalum during compression is regulated by deformation twinning. Whether or not this twinning exhibits anisotropy was investigated through simulation of displacement-controlled nanoindentation test using molecular dynamics simulation. MD data was found to correlate well with the experimental data in terms of surface topography and hardness measurements. The mechanism of the transport of material was identified due to the formation and motion of prismatic dislocations loops (edge dislocations) belonging to the 1/2<111> type and <100> type Burgers vector family. Further analysis of crystal defects using a fully automated dislocation extraction algorithm (DXA) illuminated formation and migration of twin boundaries on the (110) and (111) orientation but not on the (010) orientation and most importantly after retraction all the dislocations disappeared on the (110) orientation suggesting twinning to dominate dislocation nucleation in driving plasticity in tantalum. A significant finding was that the maximum shear stress (critical Tresca stress) in the deformation zone exceeded the theoretical shear strength of tantalum (Shear modulus/ 2π~10.03 GPa) on the (010) orientation but was lower than it on the (110) and the (111) orientations. In light to this, the conventional lore of assuming the maximum shear stress being 0.465 times the mean contact pressure was found to break down at atomic scale.

In order to combine the mechanical properties of yttria-stabilised zirconia (ZrO2-3 mol% Y2O3; code Y-ZrO2) with the bioactivity of titania (TiO2), Y-ZrO2-TiO2, green compacts with 0-40vol.% TiO2 were sintered at 1300, 1400, and 1500degreesC for 4h, respectively. The microstructural features such as grains, pores, and phases were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical properties such as hardness and toughness were also determined using the methods of Vickers indentation and Knoop indentation. All the composites showed the major tetragonal Y-ZrO2 phase regardless of the content of the added TiO2. However, rutile TiO2 phase was obtained at 1300degreesC, whereas zirconium titanate (ZrTi04) phase was found at 1400 and 1500degreesC. The Y-ZrO2-ZrTiO4 Composites sintered at 1500degreesC showed relatively high hardness (860-1000 kg/mm(2)) and toughness (4.0-4.5 MPa m(0.5)), whereas the Y-ZrO2-TiO2 composites sintered at 1300degreesC had slightly lower hardness (720-950kg/mm(2)) and fracture toughness (3.1-3.3 MPa m(0.5)). The abrasion seen on some of the retrieved CoCrMo hip joints has been reported to be caused by entrained hard particles in vivo. However, little work has been reported on the abrasion mechanisms of CoCrMo alloy in simulated body environments. Therefore. this study covers the mapping of micro-abrasion wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo induced by third body hard particles under a wide range of abrasive test conditions. This study has a specific focus on covering the possible in vivo wear modes seen on metal-on-metal (MoM) surfaces. Nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were also employed to further investigate the secondary wear mechanisms-nano-scale material deformation that involved in micro-abrasion processes. This work addresses the potential detrimental effects of third body hard particles in vivo such as increased wear rates (debris generation) and corrosion (metal-ion release). The abrasive wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo have been investigated under various wear-corrosion conditions employing two abrasives, SiC (similar to 4 mu m) and Al(2)O(3) (similar to 1 mu m), in two test solutions, 0.9% NaCl and 25% bovine serum. The specific wear rates, wear mechanisms and transitions between mechanisms are discussed in terms of the abrasive size, volume fraction and the test solutions deployed. The work shows that at high abrasive volume fractions, the presence of protein enhanced the wear loss due to the enhanced particle entrainment, whereas at much lower abrasive volume fractions, protein reduced the wear loss by acting as a boundary lubricant or rolling elements which reduced the abrasivity (load per particle) of the abrasive particles. The abrasive wear rate and wear mechanisms of the CoCrMo are dependent on the nature of the third body abrasives, their entrainment into the contact and the presence of the proteins. Some retrieved CoCrMo hip implants have shown that abrasive wear is one of the possible wear mechanisms invoked within such joints. To date, little work has focused on the third body abrasion of CoCrMo and therefore there is a general lack of understanding of the effect of abrasive size and volume concentration on the tribo-corrosion performance of the CoCrMo alloys. The present work assessed the tribo-corrosion behaviour of cast CoCrMo (F-75) under various abrasion-corrosion conditions by using a modified microabrasion tester incorporating a three-electrode electrochemical cell. The effects of reduced abrasive size/hardness and volume concentration, as well as the role of proteins on the tribo-corrosion performance of the cast CoCrMo alloy were addressed. The correlation between electrochemical and mechanical processes for different abrasion-corrosion test conditions has been discussed in detail. Results show that the reduction in abrasive size and volume concentration can significantly affect the abrasion-corrosion wear mechanisms and the wear-induced corrosion response of the material. The finding of this study implies that the smaller/softer third body particles generated in vivo could also result in significant wear-induced corrosion and therefore potential metal ion release, which could be potentially detrimental to both the patient health and the life span of the implants. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The abrasion damage on retrieved CoCrMo based hip joints is reported to be influenced by the entrainment of micron and sub-micron sized debris/hard particles. This paper represents the first attempt to look into the effects of relatively soft abrasives with micron and sub-micron dimensions on the abrasion mechanisms and the abrasion-corrosion performance of the cast CoCrMo in simulated hip joint environments. A modified micro-abrasion tester incorporating a liquid tank and a three-electrode electrochemical cell was used. Al O (300 nm and 1 μm) and sub-micron sized BaSO abrasives were chosen as being comparable in the size and hardness to the wear particles found in vivo. Results show that the specific wear rates of cast CoCrMo are dependent on the abrasive particle size, hardness and volume concentration. Larger particle size, higher hardness and greater abrasive volume fractions gave greater wear rates. The wear-induced corrosion current generally increases with increasing wear rates, and the presence of proteins seems to suppress the wear-induced corrosion current especially when abrasive volume fractions were high. This study shows that the nature of abrasives and the test solutions are both important in determining the wear mechanisms and the abrasion-corrosion response of cast CoCrMo. These findings provide new and important insights into the in vivo wear mechanisms of CoCrMo. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this study, ceria-yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) free-standing coatings, deposited by air plasma spraying (APS), were isothermally annealed at 1315 °C in order to explore the effect of sintering on the microstructure and the mechanical properties (i.e., hardness and Young's modulus). To this aim, coating microstructure, before and after heat treatment, was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, and image analysis was carried out in order to estimate porosity fraction. Moreover, Vickers microindentation and depth-sensing nanoindentation tests were performed in order to study the evolution of hardness and Young's modulus as a function of annealing time. The results showed that thermal aging of CYSZ coatings leads to noticeable microstructural modifications. Indeed, the healing of finer pores, interlamellar, and intralamellar microcracks was observed. In particular, the porosity fraction decreased from ~10 to ~5% after 50 h at 1315 °C. However, the X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that high phase stability was achieved, as no phase decomposition occurred after thermal aging. In turn, both the hardness and Young's modulus increased, in particular, the increase in stiffness (with respect to "as produced" samples) was equal to ~25%, whereas the hardness increased to up to ~60%. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are widely adopted to protect mechanical components in gas turbine engines operating at high temperature. Basically, the surface temperature of these components must be low enough to retain material properties within acceptable bounds and to extend component life. From this standpoint, air plasma-sprayed (APS) ceria and yttria co-stabilized zirconia (CYSZ) is particularly promising because it provides enhanced thermal insulation capabilities and resistance to hot corrosion. However, essential mechanical properties, such as hardness and Young's modulus, have been less thoroughly investigated. Knowledge of Young's modulus is of concern because it has a significant effect on strain tolerance and stress level and, hence, on durability. The focus of the present study was to determine the mechanical properties of APS CYSZ coatings. In particular, X-ray diffraction (XRD) is adopted for phase analysis of powders and as-sprayed coatings. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis (IA) are employed to explore coating microstructure and porosity. Finally, the Young's modulus of the coating is determined using nanoindentation and a resonant method. The results obtained are then discussed and a cross-check on their consistency is carried out by resorting to a micromechanical model. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

The plain fatigue and fretting fatigue tests of Ti-1023 titanium alloy were performed using a high-frequency push-pull fatigue testing machine. Both σmax versus number of cycles to failure curves were obtained for comparative analysis of the fretting effect on fatigue performance of the titanium alloy. Meanwhile, by analyzing the fracture of plain fatigue and fretting fatigue, the fretting scar and the fretting debris observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the mechanism of fretting fatigue failure of Ti-1023 titanium alloy is discussed. The fretting fatigue strength of Ti-1023 titanium alloy is 175 MPa under 10 MPa contact pressure, which is 21% of plain fatigue strength (836 MPa). Under fretting condition, the Ti-1023 titanium alloy fatigue fracture failure occurs in a shorter fatigue life. When it comes to σmax versus number of cycles to failure curves, data points in the range of 106–107 cycles under plain fatigue condition moved to the range of 105–106 under fretting fatigue condition. The integrity of the fatigue specimen surface was seriously damaged under the effect of fretting. With the alternating stress loaded on specimen, the stress concentrated on the surface of fretting area, which brought earlier the initiation and propagation of crack.

The electroless nickel composite (ENC) with various silicon carbide contents was deposited onto aluminium alloy (LM24) substrate. The wear behaviour and the microhardness of the composite coating samples were investigated and compared with particles free and aluminium substrate samples using micro-scale abrasion tester and microhardness tester respectively. The wear scar marks and wear volume were analysed by optical microscope. The wear tracks were further studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The embedded particles were found to get pressed into the matrix which helps resisting further wearing process for composite samples. However, random orientation of microcuts and microfallow were seen for ENC sample but more uniform wearing was observed for EN sample. The composite coating with low content of SiC was worn minimum. Early penetration into the substrate was seen for samples with higher SiC content. Microhardness was improved after heat treatment for all the samples containing various SiC content. Under dry sliding condition, inclusion of particles in the matrix did not improve the wearing resistance performance in as-deposited state. The wearing worsened as the content of the particles increased generally. However, on heat treatment, the composite coatings exhibited improved wear resistance and the best result was obtained from the one with low particle contents.

A Fe-8.46%Mn-0.24%Nb-0.038%C (wt.%) manganese steel was investigated. The steel has a 100% bcc structure after heat treatment at 850°C for 1.5 h, water quenching or air cooling. Martensite interlocked microstructure consisting of fine martensite plates/needles with different spatial orientations was found. Austenite forms, in small amounts, after a 600°C reheating treatment. Scanning electron microscopy images and energy dispersive spectrometry of the fracture surfaces revealed both ductile and brittle types of failure and precipitates. Deep quenching after the heat treatments does not change the phase composition or the hardness. NbC is formed in the steel, in high number densities. It plays a role in the impact fracture process, by acting as void nucleation sites, facilitating ductile fracture with dimples appearing on the fracture surface.

Digital signatures are an important primitive for building secure systems and are used in most real-world security protocols. However, almost all popular signature schemes are either based on the factoring assumption (RSA) or the hardness of the discrete logarithm problem (DSA/ECDSA). In the case of classical cryptanalytic advances or progress on the development of quantum computers, the hardness of these closely related problems might be seriously weakened. A potential alternative approach is the construction of signature schemes based on the hardness of certain lattice problems that are assumed to be intractable by quantum computers. Due to significant research advancements in recent years, lattice-based schemes have now become practical and appear to be a very viable alternative to number-theoretic cryptography. In this article, we focus on recent developments and the current state of the art in lattice-based digital signatures and provide a comprehensive survey discussing signature schemes with respect to practicality. Additionally, we discuss future research areas that are essential for the continued development of lattice-based cryptography.

YAl2p/Mg-14Li-1Al composite was made by a stir-casting technique. The aging behavior of the composite was investigated using hardness test, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the microhardness variations of both the matrix alloy and its composite are related to the precipitation and decomposition of θ-MgLi2Al phase. The strengthening of the composite is from the addition of YAl2 particulates and the precipitation in matrix alloy. The former contribution is stable, but the latter is unstable and depends on the aging behavior. The addition of YAl2 particulates delays occurring of the aging behavior of composite.

Electroless nickel (EN) and electroless nickel composite (ENC) coatings were deposited on aluminium alloy substrate, LM24. The micro abrasion test was conducted to study the wear behaviour of the coatings with the effect of SiC concentration. Microhardness of the coatings was tested also. The wear scars were analysed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The wear resistance was found to be improved in composite coating that has higher microhardness as compared to particles free and the bare aluminium substrate. In as-deposited condition for the composite coating, the wear volume increases on increase in SiC percentage in the coating but is found to be minimum for lower SiC percentage. The increase in hardness on heat treatment at 400°C is due to the hardening or grain coarsening with the formation Ni3P.

Context. Although the question of progenitor systems and detailed explosion mechanisms still remains a matter of discussion, it is commonly believed that Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are production sites of large amounts of radioactive nuclei. Even though the gamma-ray emission due to radioactive decays is responsible for powering the light curves of SNe Ia, gamma rays themselves are of particular interest as a diagnostic tool because they directly lead to deeper insight into the nucleosynthesis and the kinematics of these explosion events. Aims: We study the evolution of gamma-ray line and continuum emission of SNe Ia with the objective of analyzing the relevance of observations in this energy range. We seek to investigate the chances for the success of future MeV missions regarding their capabilities for constraining the intrinsic properties and the physical processes of SNe Ia. Methods: Focusing on two of the most broadly discussed SN Ia progenitor scenarios - a delayed detonation in a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf (WD) and a violent merger of two WDs - we used three-dimensional explosion models and performed radiative transfer simulations to obtain synthetic gamma-ray spectra. Both chosen models produce the same mass of 56Ni and have similar optical properties that are in reasonable agreement with the recently observed supernova SN 2011fe. We examine the gamma-ray spectra with respect to their distinct features and draw connections to certain characteristics of the explosion models. Applying diagnostics, such as line and hardness ratios, the detection prospects for future gamma-ray missions with higher sensitivities in the MeV energy range are discussed. Results: In contrast to the optical regime, the gamma-ray emission of our two chosen models proves to be quite different. The almost direct connection of the emission of gamma rays to fundamental physical processes occurring in SNe Ia permits additional constraints concerning several explosion model properties that are not easily accessible within other wavelength ranges. Proposed future MeV missions such as GRIPS will resolve all spectral details only for nearby SNe Ia, but hardness ratio and light curve measurements still allow for a distinction of the two different models at 10 Mpc and 16 Mpc for an exposure time of 106 s. The possibility of detecting the strongest line features up to the Virgo distance will offer the opportunity to build up a first sample of SN Ia detections in the gamma-ray energy range and underlines the importance of future space observatories for MeV gamma rays.
