Generally, the solid and liquid fractions (digestate) from Anaerobic Digestion (AD) energy production are considered as waste. This has a negative impact on the sustainability of AD processes because of the financial outlay required to treat digestate before being discharged into municipal water treatment plants or natural water bodies. The main aim of this research was to investigate feasibility of producing an organic fertiliser using anaerobic digestate and limestone powders as the raw materials employing a high shear granulation process. Two-level factorial experimental design was used to determine the influence of granulation process variables on, the strength, resistance to attrition and yield of the granules. It was concluded from the study that it is technically feasible to produce organic fertiliser granules of acceptable strength and product yield. Increasing the liquid-to-solid ratio during granulation leads to increased granule strength and better product yield. Although the strength of the granules produced was lower than typical strength of commercial synthetic fertiliser granules (about 5 to 7. MPa), this could be improved by mixing the digestate with a polymeric binder or coating the particles post granulation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

A new compound, IrMnSi, has been synthesized, and its crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated by means of neutron powder diffraction, magnetization measurements, and first-principles theory. The crystal structure is found to be of the TiNiSi type (ordered Co2P, space group Pnma). The Mn-projected electronic states are situated at the Fermi level, giving rise to metallic binding, whereas a certain degree of covalent character is observed for the chemical bond between the It and Si atoms. A cycloidal, i.e., noncollinear, magnetic structure was observed below 460 K, with the propagation vector q=[0,0,0.4530(5)] at 10 K. The magnetism is dominated by large moments on the Mn sites, 3.8 mu(B)/atom from neutron diffraction. First-principles theory reproduces the propagation vector of the experimental magnetic structure as well as the angles between the Mn moments. The calculations further result in a magnetic moment of 3.21 mu(B) for the Mn atoms, whereas the Ir and Si moments are negligible, in agreement with observations. A calculation that more directly incorporates electron-electron interactions improves the agreement between the theoretical and experimental magnetic moments. A band mechanism is suggested to explain the observed magnetic order.

An extensive investigation of the ferromagnetic compound TlCo2S2 has resulted in new information on the electronic and magnetic structure. Electronic structure calculations showed that magnetic ordering is energetically favorable with a clear driving force for ferromagnetic coupling within the cobalt layers. TlCo2S2 is metallic and the conductivity is due to holes in the valence band. XPS single crystal measurements did not show evidence of mixed oxidation states of cobalt. Neutron powder diffraction resulted in a ferromagnetic structure with the magnetic moment in the ab-plane. The derived magnetic moment of the cobalt atom is 0.65(2) mu(B) at 10 K and is in very good agreement with the value, mu(sat) = 0.65(1) mu(B) at 10 K, inferred from the magnetic hysteresis curve. We present here a detailed study of the complex relationship between the electromagnetic near-field and far-field responses of "real" nanostructured metallic surfaces. The near-field and far-field responses are specified in terms of (spectra of) the surface-enhanced Raman-scattering enhancement factor (SERS EF) and optical extinction, respectively. First, it is shown that gold nanorod- and nanotube-array substrates exhibit three distinct localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs): a longitudinal, a transverse, and a cavity mode. The cavity mode simultaneously has the largest impact on the near-field behavior (as observed through the SERS EF) and the weakest optical interaction: It has a "near-field-type" character. The transverse and longitudinal modes have a significant impact on the far-field behavior but very little impact on SERS: They have a "far-field-type" character. We confirm the presence of the cavity mode using a combination of SERS EF spectra, electron microscopy, and electromagnetic modeling and thus clearly illustrate and explain the (lack of) correlation between the SERS EF spectra and the optical response in terms of the contrasting character of the three LSPRs. In doing so, we experimentally demonstrate that, for a surface that supports multiple LSPRs, the near-field and far-field properties can in fact be tuned almost independently. It is further demonstrated that small changes in geometrical parameters that tune the spectral location of the LPSRs can also drastically influence the character of these modes, resulting in certain unusual behavior, such as the far-field resonance redshift as the near-field resonance blueshifts. In most granulation processes involving processing of a mixture of powders, the powders have comparable densities and similar particle size distributions. Granulation of powders with large variation differences in powder densities is usually avoided due problems such as particle segregation. The granular product being designed in this work required the use of two different powders namely limestone and teawaste; these materials have different bulk and particle densities. The overall aim of the project was to obtain a granular product in
the size range 2 to 4mm. The two powders were granulated in different proportions using carboxymethyl cellose (CMC) as the binder. The effect of amount of binder added, relative composition of the powder, and type of tea wasted on the product yield was studied. The results show that the optimum product yield was a function of both relative powder composition and the amount of binder used; increasing the composition of teawaste in the powder increased the amount of binder required for successful granulation.Increasing the mass fraction of teawaste in the powder mix must be accompanied by an increase in the amount of binder to achieve the desired product yield. It was found that attrition losses decreased with increasing binder content.

Strawberry flavonoids are potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that have been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors in prospective cohort studies. Effects of strawberry supplementation on metabolic risk factors have not been studied in obese populations. We tested the hypothesis that freeze-dried strawberry powder (FSP) will lower fasting lipids and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation at four weeks compared to baseline. We also tested the tolerability and safety of FSP in subjects with metabolic syndrome. FSP is a concentrated source of polyphenolic flavonoids, fiber and phytosterols.

We simulate and discuss the local electric-field enhancement in a system of a dielectric nanoparticle placed very near to a metallic substrate. We use finite-element numerical simulations in order to understand the field-enhancement mechanism in this dielectric NP-on-mirror system. Under appropriate excitation conditions, the gap between the particle and the substrate becomes a "hot spot", i.e., a region of intense electromagnetic field. We also show how the optical properties of the dielectric NP placed on a metallic substrate affect the plasmonic field enhancement in the nanogap and characterize the confinement in the gap. Our study helps to understand and design systems with dielectric NPs on metallic substrates which can be equally as effective for SERS, fluorescence, and nonlinear phenomena as conventional all plasmonic structures.
