The government of the UK has set an ambitious target that all newly built homes be carbon neutral by 2016 and to achieving an overall 80% carbon emission by 2050. Carbon Trust in 2009 published a research revealing that non-domestic buildings accounted for 18% of the emissions in the UK. They argued that to achieve the targets of low carbon emission there is need for better building stock that are better used. The evaluation of the performance of buildings is therefore critical if the understanding of how they are used is to be known. This paper is a brief building performance evaluation of the newly build library at Queens University Belfast carried out during the summer of 2010. It employed the Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) methodology to assess its performance. The results reveal that despite the intelligent technologies in the building there was a mismatch between the measured data and the perception of users of its performance. The study suggests the need for further study for reasons of dichotomy of the data. Keywords: building performance evaluation, carbon reduction strategies, passive environmental design techniques, active renewable energy technologies, Northern Ireland

The ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}amide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) was tested as solvent for the separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons containing 7 or 8 carbon atoms (the C-7- and C-8-fractions). The liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) of the ternary systems (heptane + toluene + [C(2)mim][NTf2]) and (octane + ethylbenzene + [C(2)mim][NTf2]), at 25 degrees C, were experimentally determined. The performance of the ionic liquid as the solvent in such systems was evaluated by means of the calculation of the solute distribution ratio and the selectivity. The results were compared to those previously reported for the extraction of benzene from its mixtures with hexane by using the same ionic liquid, therefore analysing the influence of the size of the hydrocarbons. It was found that the ionic liquid is also good for the extraction of C-7- and C-8- fraction aromatic compounds, just a greater amount of ionic liquid being needed to perform an equivalently efficient separation than for the C-6-fraction. It is also discussed how [C(2)mim][NTf2] performs comparably better than the conventional solvent sulfolane. The original 'Non-Random Two-Liquid' (NRTL) equation was used to adequately correlate the experimental LLE data.

A dynamic global security-aware synthesis flow using the SystemC language is presented. SystemC security models are first specified at the system or behavioural level using a library of SystemC behavioural descriptions which provide for the reuse and extension of security modules. At the core of the system is incorporated a global security-aware scheduling algorithm which allows for scheduling to a mixture of components of varying security level. The output from the scheduler is translated into annotated nets which are subsequently passed to allocation, optimisation and mapping tools for mapping into circuits. The synthesised circuits incorporate asynchronous secure power-balanced and fault-protected components. Results show that the approach offers robust implementations and efficient security/area trade-offs leading to significant improvements in turnover.

Privacy has now become a major topic not only in law but in computing, psychology, economics and social studies, and the explosion in scholarship has made it difficult for the student to traverse the field and identify the significant issues across the many disciplines. This series brings together a collection of significant papers with a multi-disciplinary approach which enable the reader to navigate through the complexities of the issues and make sense of the prolific scholarship published in this field.

The three volumes in this series address different themes: an anthropological approach to what privacy means in a cultural context; the issue of state surveillance where the state must both protect the individual and protect others from that individual and also protect itself; and, finally, what privacy might mean in a world where government and commerce collect data incessantly. The regulation of privacy is continually being called for and these papers help enable understanding of the ethical rationales behind the choices made in the sphere of regulation of privacy.

The articles presented in each of these collections have been chosen for the quality of their scholarship and their utility to the researcher, and feature a variety of approaches. The articles which debate the technical context of privacy are accessible to those from the arts and humanities; overall, the breadth of approach taken in the choice of articles has created a series which is an invaluable and important resource for lecturers, researchers and student.
