• Stable isotope ratios of organic compounds are valuable tools for determining the geographical origin, identity, authenticity or history of samples from a vast range of sources such as sediments, plants and animals, including humans. • Hydrogen isotope ratios (d2H values) of methoxyl groups in lignin from wood of trees grown in different geographical areas were measured using compound-specificpyrolysis isotope ratio mass spectrometry analysis. • Lignin methoxyl groups were depleted in 2H relative to both meteoric water andwhole wood. A high correlation (r2=0.91) was observed between the d2 H valuesof the methoxyl groups and meteoric water, with a relatively uniform fractionation of –216±19 recorded with respect to meteoric water over a range of d2H values from –110 in northern Norway to + 20‰ in Yemen. Thus, woods from northernlatitudes can be clearly distinguished from those from tropical regions. By contrast, the d2H values of bulk wood were only relatively poorly correlated (r 2 = 0.47) with those of meteoric water. • Measurement of the d 2H values of lignin methoxyl groups is potentially a powerful tool that could be of use not only in the constraint of the geographical origin of lignified material but also in paleoclimate, food authenticity and forensic investigations.

In this letter, a standard postnonlinear blind source separation algorithm is proposed, based on the MISEP method, which is widely used in linear and nonlinear independent component analysis. To best suit a wide class of postnonlinear mixtures, we adapt the MISEP method to incorporate a priori information of the mixtures. In particular, a group of three-layered perceptrons and a linear network are used as the unmixing system to separate sources in the postnonlinear mixtures, and another group of three-layered perceptron is used as the auxiliary network. The learning algorithm for the unmixing system is then obtained by maximizing the output entropy of the auxiliary network. The proposed method is applied to postnonlinear blind source separation of both simulation signals and real speech signals, and the experimental results demonstrate its effectiveness and efficiency in comparison with existing methods.

The comparison of three ionic liquid-mediated catalytic processes for the benzoylation of anisole with benzoic anhydride is presented. A detailed understanding of the mechanism by which the zeolite and metal triflate reactions in bis{trifluoromethanesulfonyl}imide-based ionic liquids has been reported previously, and these routes are considered together with an indium chloride-based ionic liquid system. Solvent extraction and vacuum/steam distillation have been assessed as possible workup procedures, and an overall preliminary economic evaluation of each overall process is reported. Although the predominant activity is associated with the in situ formation of a homogeneous acid catalyst, the low cost and facile separation of the zeolite-catalysed process leads to this route being the most economically viable overall option. The results of a continuous flow miniplant based on the zeolite catalyst are also presented and compared with the reaction using a small plug How reactor.
