The electrochemical oxidation of catechol and dopamine has been studied at a platinum micro-electrode (10 pm diameter) in two room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs): 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C(4)mim][BE4]). For catechol in [C(2)mim][NTf2], an electrochemically quasi-reversible oxidation peak was observed at 1.1 V vs. Pt with a back peak at 0.4 V vs. Pt. This is assigned to the two-electron oxidation of catechol to doubly protonated o-benzoquinone. Double-step chronoamperometry gave a diffusion coefficient for the catechol and the oxidised species which is 3.8 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) for both. For catechol in [C(4)mim][BF4], a two-electron oxidation wave was observed at 1.0 V vs. Pt with no back peak. Another peak at less positive potential was also observed at 0.6 V vs. Pt in [C(4)mim][BF4] but not in [C(2)mim][NTf2] which is assigned to the adsorption of electrochemically formed neutral o-benzoquinone on the platinum electrode. The oxidised protonated o-benzoquinone is suggested to be deprotonated by the [BF4](-) anion, but not by the [NTf2](-) anion: hence adsorption of the neutral species at the platinum electrode, not the charged species. For dopamine in both RTILs, two chemically irreversible oxidation peaks were observed at 0.75 V and 1.1 V vs. Pt, and assigned to the oxidation of dopamine to the corresponding semi-quinone and the quinone. Potential-step chronoamperometry was carried out on the oxidation waves of dopamine in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and the diffusion coefficient of species in solution was calculated to be 6.85 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and confirmed that the waves corresponded to one and two electron processes. A third wave was observed at 1.8 V vs. Pt which is attributed to the oxidation of the amine group to a radical cation with likely subsequent follow up chemistry. In [C(4)mim][BF4] a peak at less positive potential was observed for dopamine, similar to catechol which is assigned to the adsorption of the neutral quinone species on the platinum electrode formed by the reaction of the removal of protons from the oxidised dopamine with the [BF4](-) anion. This article describes an approach for quantifying microsphere deposition onto iron-oxide-coated sand under the influence of adsorbed Suwannee River Humic Acid (SRHA). The experimental technique involved a triple pulse injection of model latex microspheres (microspheres) in pulses of (1) microspheres, followed by (2) SRHA, and then (3) microspheres, into a column filled with iron-coated quartz sand as a water-saturated porous medium. A random sequential adsorption model (RSA) simulated the gradual rise in the first (microsphere) breakthrough curve (BTC). Using the same model calibration parameters a dramatic increase in concentration at the start of the second particle BTC, generated after SRHA injection, could be simulated by matching microsphere concentrations to extrapolated RSA output. RSA results and microsphere/SRHA recoveries showed that 1 mg of SRHA could block 5.90 plus or minus 0.14 x 10^9 microsphere deposition sites. This figure was consistent between experiments injecting different SRHA masses, despite contrasting microsphere deposition/release regimes generating the second microsphere BTC.

Arsenic and its compounds are toxic pollutants for the environment and all living organisms. At present, there is considerable interest in studying new sorbent materials for the removal of arsenic from aqueous solutions. This work discusses the feasibility of arsenic uptake onto dolomite which is considered to be a potential inexpensive adsorbent. Thermodynamic and kinetic experiments were undertaken to assess the capacity and rate of As uptake onto dolomite. Experimental data were mathematically described using adsorption kinetic models, namely pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The arsenic removal was found to be dependent on the dosage of dolomite, adsorbent particle size and the presence of various anions. Thermodynamic results indicate that the adsorption follows an exothermic chemisorption process. The experimental data indicate successful removal of As(V) ion from aqueous solution indicating that dolomite be used as an inexpensive treatment process. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Natural Bulgarian clinoptilolite from the south-eastern Rhodopes mountain was modified through treatment with hydrochloric acid with various normality, both single and repeatedly, as well as through a charring of a preliminary obtained NH4-form. The parameters concerning the uptake of the ion-exchangeable cations (Ca2+, Na+ and K+), as well as the uptake of aluminium from the natural material were calculated on the basis of the chemical contents. The highest extent of cations removal was attained in the case of the treatment with NH4Cl solution, while the highest aluminium deficiency was established in the samples treated by hydrochloric acid solutions with increasing concentration. Sulfur dioxide adsorption on the obtained decationised and dealuminised samples was studied according to the frontal-dynamic method. The parameters of the breakthrough curves, namely breakthrough time, saturation time and some of the statistical moments of the curve distribution, were determined. The dynamic adsorption capacities were also specified. Comparing the momentum values it was established that as a result of the natural zeolite treatment with NH4Cl and with low concentrated acid, the diffusion resistance decreases because of the dominant exchange of the presenting exchangeable cations in the samples with the smaller size protons and because of enlargement of the pores opening. Intensified dealuminisation was observed when more concentrated acid solutions are used. The capacity is enhanced, probably due to an increase in the total pore volume.

A novel technique for the separation of monocytes from human peripheral blood preparations has been developed. The technique is based on the use of expanded-bed adsorption and a solid perfluorocarbon derivatized with avidin or streptavidin for the indirect positive or negative capture of cells labeled with biotinylated monoclonal antibodies. The perfluorocarbon support was prepared and characterized and the contactor design and operating conditions, that enable cells to be selectively isolated, were investigated. Experiments consisted of applying an immunolabeled pulse of 1 x 10(8) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), isolated by density gradient centrifugation, directly onto a refrigerated expanded bed. The major cell types remaining were T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, and monocytes. Monocytes could be positively adsorbed, following labeling with anti-CD14 mAb, with a clearance of up to 89% and a depletion factor of 7.6. They could also be

Recently polymeric adsorbents have been emerging as highly effective alternatives to activated carbons for pollutant removal from industrial effluents. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polymerized using the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique has been investigated for its feasibility to remove phenol from aqueous solution. Adsorption equilibrium and kinetic investigations were undertaken to evaluate the effect of contact time, initial concentration (10-90 mg/L), and temperature (25-55 degrees C). Phenol uptake was found to increase with increase in initial concentration and agitation time. The adsorption kinetics were found to follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The intra-particle diffusion analysis indicated that film diffusion may be the rate controlling step in the removal process. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models namely Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin and Redlich-Peterson by non-linear least square regression and their goodness-of-fit evaluated in terms of mean relative error (MRE) and standard error of estimate (SEE). The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson isotherms. Thermodynamic parameters such as Delta G degrees and Delta H degrees indicated that the sorption process is exothermic and spontaneous in nature and that higher ambient temperature results in more favourable adsorption. Cationic dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), Thionine (TH) and Basic Fuschin (BF), but not anionic dyes, such as Acid Orange 7 (AO7), Acid Blue 9 (AB9) and Acid Fuschin (AF), are readily adsorbed onto mesoporous titania films at high pH (pH 11), i.e. well above the pzc of titania (pH 6.5), due to electrostatic forces of attraction and repulsion, respectively. The same anionic dyes, but not the cationic dyes, are readily adsorbed on the same titania films at low pH (pH 3), i.e. well below titania's pzc. MB appears to adsorb on mesoporous titania films at pH 11 as the trimer (lambda(max) = 570 nm) but, upon drying, although the trimer still dominates, there is an absorption peak at 665 nm, especially notable at low [MB], which may be due to the monomer, but more likely MB J-aggregates. In contrast, the absorption spectrum of AO7 adsorbed onto the mesoporous titania film at low pH is very similar to the dye monomer. For both MB and AO7 the kinetics of adsorption are first order and yield high rate constants (3.71 and 1.481 g(-1) min(-1)), indicative of a strong adsorption process. Indeed, both MB and AO7 stained films retained much of their colour when left overnight in dye-free pH 11 and 3 solutions, respectively, indicating the strong nature of the adsorption. The kinetics of the photocatalytic bleaching of the MB-titania films at high pH are complex and not well-described by the Julson-Ollis kinetic model [A.J. Julson, D.F. Ollis, Appl. Catal. B. 65 (2006) 315]. Instead, there appears to be an initial fast but not simple demethylation step, followed by a zero-order bleaching and further demethylation steps. In contrast, the kinetics of photocatalytic bleaching of the AO7-titania film give a good fit to the Julson-Ollis kinetic model, yielding values for the various fitting parameters not too dissimilar to those reported for AO7 adsorbed on P25 titania powder. A happy medium: Volumetric adsorption of carbon monoxide at 308 K and UHR-HAADF-STEM, HREM, and computer modeling techniques were compared. Experimental CO/Au ratios at saturation coverage for two supported gold catalysts were shown to fit very well the predictions of a nanostructural model that considers CO adsorption on gold sites with coordination numbers of less than eight.

Particulate colloids often occur together with proteins in sewage-impacted water. Using Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) as a surrogate for protein in sewage, column experiments investigating the capacity of iron-oxide coated sands to remove latex microspheres from water revealed that microsphere attenuation mechanisms depended on antecedent BSA coverage. Dual pulse experiment (DPE) results suggested that where all BSA was adsorbed, subsequent multiple pore volume microsphere breakthrough curves reflected progressively reduced colloid deposition rates with increasing adsorbed BSA content. Modelling colloid responses suggested adsorption of 1 µg BSA generated the same response as blockage by between 7.1x108 and 2.3x109 deposited microspheres. By contrast, microsphere responses in DPEs where BSA coverage of the deposition sites approached/ reached saturation revealed the coated sand maintained a finite capacity to attenuate microspheres, even when incapable of further BSA adsorption. Subsequent microsphere breakthrough curves demonstrated the matrix’s colloid attenuation capacity progressively increased with continued microsphere deposition. Experimental findings suggested BSA adsorption on the sand surface approaching/ reaching saturation generated attractive deposition sites for colloids, which became progressively more attractive with further colloid deposition (filter ripening). Results demonstrate that adsorption of a single type of protein may either enhance or inhibit colloid mobility in saturated porous media.

The observed adsorption of acid orange 7, AO7(-), on P25 titania over a range of pH values (pH 2-8) gives a good fit to data generated using a charge distribution, multisite complexation, i.e. CD-MUSIC, model, modified for aggregated dye adsorption. For this system the model predicts that both the apparent dark Langmuir adsorption constant. K-L, and the number of adsorption sites, n(o), increase with decreasing pH, and are negligible above pH 6. At pH 2 the CD-MUSIC model predicts the fraction of singly co-ordinated sites occupied by the dye,f(AO7), is ca. 32% under the in situ monitoring experimental conditions used in this work to study the photocatalytic bleaching of AO7(-) under UV light illumination ([TiO2] = 20 mgdm(-3); [AO7(-)](total) = 4.86 x 10(-5) M). Although AO7(-) adsorption on P25 titania is insignificant above pH 6 and increases almost linearly and markedly below this pH, the measured initial rate of bleaching of AO7(-), photocatalysed by titania using UV appears to only increase modestly (
