After their oceanic migration, juvenile European eels Anguilla anguilla enter estuaries as glass eels, develop into pigmented elvers and migrate into fresh water. Fisheries often transfer such eels abruptly between salinities, principally glass eels and elvers from estuarine to fresh water. It is usually assumed that survival rates are high, but this required systematic investigation. Survival was found to be 100% over 21 days of glass eels and semipigmented elvers transferred abruptly from estuary conditions into fresh water, 50% sea water and full sea water. Fully pigmented elvers, however, showed significantly reduced survival when transferred into sea water. Salinity preference experiments with juvenile eels have historically been inconclusive. Here, in a choice chamber design, a clear developmental shift in salinity preference was found, with glass eels preferring 100% sea water, semipigmented elvers showing no clear preference and fully pigmented elvers preferring fresh water. We conclude that eel fisheries enhancement by abrupt transfer of juveniles among salinities is largely vindicated. In addition, developmental shifts in salinity preference have been clarified and this aids in the interpretation of eel migration patterns.

There is evidence that active, pre-emergence maternal brood care in amphipod crustaceans may be associated with 'harsh' environmental conditions. We examined, in the rockpool amphipod Apherusa jurinei, behavioural activities that may function as a form of active brood care. Only ovigerous females showed 'curl' and 'stretch' activities, with consequent flushing of the brood pouch and cycling of the eggs therein. There was a significant decline in these activities as embryonic development advanced and brood care almost ceased when well-developed embryos showed a heart pulse and self-ventilation. We propose that this pattern of brood care reflects changes in the physiological requirements of embryos as they develop within the egg membrane. In addition, ovigerous females showed significantly higher levels of brood care under lowered oxygen conditions. They achieved this by increasing the average duration of the 'stretch' component, with other brood care components remaining constant. Thus, developmental and environmental cues alter the components of active brood care in distinct ways. Experimental removal showed that the physical presence of eggs in the brood pouch is important in controlling the expression of brood care activities. However, females with all of their eggs removed continued to brood at low levels, suggesting that a maternal state also controls brood care. The sophisticated expression of active maternal brood care in amphipods under 'harsh' environmental conditions such as rockpools has implications both for individual reproductive success and the distribution and abundance of brooding versus nonbrooding species. In chloroform, [RuCl2(nbd)(py)(2)] (1) (nbd = norbornadiene; py = pyridine) reacts with 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,2,3,4-tetramethyl-1,3-butadiene (1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS) to give the dimer [Ru2Cl3(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)]Cl (2a), whereas, in THF [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(PY)(2)] (3) is isolated as the sole product of reaction. Compound 2 exists as a 4:1 mixture of two noninterconverting isomers, the major with C, symmetry and the minor with either C, or C-2 symmetry. A single-crystal X-ray analysis of [Ru2Cl3 (eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(2)] [SbF6] (2b), the hexafluoroantimonate salt of 2a, revealed that the diphosphine coordinates in an unusual manner, as a eta(4)-six-electron donor, bonded through both P atoms and one of the double bonds of the butadiene tether. Compounds 2a and 3 react with 1,2-ethylenediamine (en) in THF to afford [RuCl2(1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] (4), which rapidly dissociates a chloride ligand in chloroform to give [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)] [Cl] (5a). Complexes 4 and 5a cleanly and quantitatively interconvert in a solvent-dependent equilibrium, and in THF 5a readily adds chloride to displace the eta(2)-interaction and re-form 4. A single-crystal X-ray structure determination of [RuCl(eta(4)-1,2,3,4-Me-4-NUPHOS)(en)][ClO4] (5b) confirmed that the diphosphine coordinates in an eta(4)-manner as a facial six-electron donor with the eta(2)-coordinated double bond occupying the site trans to chloride. The eta(4)-bonding mode can be readily identified by the unusually high-field chemical shift associated with the phosphorus atom adjacent to the eta(2)-coordinated double bond. Complexes 2a, 2b, 4, and 5a form catalysts that are active for transfer hydrogenation of a range of ketones. In all cases, catalysts formed from precursors 2a and 2b are markedly more active than those formed from 4 and 5a.

Enantiomerically pure N,N'-bis(-2,2'-dipyridyl-5-yl)carbonyl-(S/R,S/R)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine has been synthesised by linking two 2,2'-bipyridine units by (R,R)- and (S,S)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine. The ligands possess a hindered rotation between the bipyridine chromophores, which are held together by intramolecular hydrogen bonds. ES mass spectroscopy confirmed that reaction with Fe(II), Co(III) and Cd(II) afforded dinuclear complexes. CD spectroscopy implied that enantiopure ligands conferred helicity to the metals centre giving a dominant triple helicate diastereoisomer (with the RR isomer giving a P helicate). H-1 NMR spectroscopy of the cadmium complex confirmed the presence of a single diastereoisomer. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The enantiomerically pure ligand L-3RR (2R, 3R)-bis(2,2'-dipyridyl-5-methoxyl) butane has been synthesised by linking two 2,2'-bipyridine units with (2R, 3R)-butandiol. The reaction of L-3RR with Zn(II) afforded a mononuclear species and the H-1 NMR spectroscopy points to a C-1 symmetry, expected for a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination environment. These observations were confirmed by MM2 calculations and electrospray mass spectrometry. The reaction of L-3RR with iron(II) indicated the formation of a dinuclear species by mass spectrometry. Solution state CD spectroscopy indicates that both complexes adopt a Lambda-configuration, implying a single stranded dinuclear iron(II) complex is present rather than the anticipated triple helical architecture.

In this study we investigate the coordination between rhythmic flexion-extension (FE) and supination-pronation (SP) movements at the elbow joint-complex, while manipulating the intersegmental dynamics by means of a 2-degrees of freedom (df) robot arm. We hypothesized that constraints imposed by the structure of the neuromuscular-skeletal system would (1) result in predominant pattern(s) of coordination in the absence of interaction torques and (2) influence the capabilities of participants to exploit artificially induced interaction torques. Two experiments were conducted in which different conditions of interaction torques were applied on the SP-axis as a function of FE movements. These conditions promoted different patterns of coordination between the 2-df. Control trials conducted in the absence of interaction torques revealed that both the in-phase (supination synchronized with flexion) and the anti-phase (pronation synchronized with flexion) patterns were spontaneously established by participants. The predominance of these patterns of coordination is explained in terms of the mechanical action of bi-articular muscles acting at the elbow joint-complex, and in terms of the reflexes that link the activity of the muscles involved. Results obtained in the different conditions of interaction torques revealed that those neuromuscular-skeletal constraints either impede or favor the exploitation of intersegmental dynamics depending on the context. Interaction torques were indeed found to be exploited to a greater extent in conditions in which the profiles of interaction torques favored one of the two predominant patterns of coordination (i.e., in-phase or anti-phase) as opposed to other patterns of coordination (e.g., 90 degrees or 270 degrees). Those results are discussed in relation to recent studies reporting exploitation of interaction torques in the context of rhythmic movements.
