RC beams shear-strengthened with externally-bonded FRP side strips or U-strips usually fail by debonding. As such debonding occurs in a brittle manner at relatively small shear crack widths, some of the internal steel stirrups may not have reached yielding at beam shear failure. Consequently, the internal steel stirrups cannot be fully utilized. This adverse shear interaction between internal steel stirrups and external FRP strips may significantly reduce the benefit of shear-strengthening FRP but has not been considered by any of the existing FRP strengthening design guidelines. In this paper, an improved shear strength model capable of accounting for the effect of the above shear interaction is first presented, in which the unfavorable effect of shear interaction is reflected through a reduction factor (i.e. shear interaction factor). Using a large test database established in the present study, the performance of the proposed model as well as that of three other shear strength models is then assessed. This assessment shows that the proposed shear strength model performs better than the three existing models. The assessment also shows that the inclusion of the proposed shear interaction factor in the existing models can significantly improve their performance.

This paper presents the results of a real bridge field experiment, carried out on a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) pedestrian truss bridge of which nodes are reinforced with stainless steel plates. The aim of this paper is to identify the dynamic parameters of this bridge by using both conventional techniques and a model updating algorithm. In the field experiment, the bridge was instrumented with accelerometers at a number of locations on the bridge deck, recording both vertical and transverse vibrations. It was excited via jump tests at particular locations along its span and the resulting acceleration signals are used to identify dynamic parameters, such as the bridge mode shape, natural frequency and damping constant. Pedestrianinduced vibrations are also measured and utilized to identify dynamic parameters of the bridge. For a complete analysis of the bridge, a numerical model of the FRP bridge is created whose properties are calibrated utilizing a model updating algorithm. Comparable frequencies and mode shapes to those from the experiment were obtained by the FE models considering the reinforcement by increasing elastic modulus at every node of the bridge by stainless steel plate. Moreover, considering boundary conditions at both ends as fixed in the model resulted in modal properties comparable/similar to those from the experiment. This study also demonstrated that the effect of reinforcement and boundary conditions must be properly considered in an FE model to analyze real behavior of the FRP bridge.

Different plasticizers, including phosphate-, phthalate-and adipate-based types were used in the creation of a range of colorimetric plastic film sensors for CO2, The different types of plasticizer used in the formulation of a colorimetric plastic film sensor for CO2 affect the response and recovery times of the sensor differently, An effective plasticizer was taken as one that decreased the response and recovery times of the final film sensor when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of 0-5% CO2. On this basis, the most efficient plasticizers appeared to be phosphate-based, followed by phthalate- and adipate-based plasticizers, This trend appears to reflect the degree of the polymer-plasticizer compatibility. Increasing the amount of plasticizer in the film formulation decreased the response and recovery times of the sensor dramatically, The sensitivity of the film sensor towards CO2 appears to decrease with increasing plasticizer effectiveness; thus, the general order of film CO2 sensitivity with respect to plasticizer type was found to be adipate > phthalate > phosphate. In general, the response of the optical films towards CO2 was found to be temperature sensitive [typically, Delta H = -(44-55) kJ mol(-1)], The phosphate-based plasticized films appear to be less temperature sensitive than the other plasticized films, and 2-ethylhexyl diphenylphosphate appears particularly effective in this respect (Delta H = -18.5 kJ mol(-1)).

The method of preparation of a novel plastic thin-film sensor that incorporates the fluorescent dye 8-hydroxypryrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid is described; the shelf-life of the film is over 6 months. The results of a study on the equilibrium response of the sensor towards different levels of gaseous CO2 fit a model there is a 1 + 1 equilibrium reaction between the deprotonated form of the dye (present in the film as an ion pair) and the concentration of gaseous CO2 present. In contrast to the situation in aqueous solution, in the plastic film the pK(a) of the excited form of the dye appears close to that of the ground-state form, although this does not interfere with its use as 8 CO2 sensor. The 0 to 90% response and recovery times of the film when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of air and 5% CO2 are typically 4.3 and 7.1 s, respectively.

The equilibrium responses of three new colorimetric plastic film sensors for CO2 as a function of % CO2 and temperature are described. The results fit a model in which there is a 1:1 equilibrium reaction between the deprotonated form of the dye (present in the film as an ion pair) and CO2. The 0-50% and 0-90% response and recovery times of each of these films when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of air and 5% CO2 are determined and in two cases are typically less than 3 s. The shelf life of the films is long (many months); however, prolonged use of the films leads to the permanent generation of the protonated form of the dye over a period of 20-100 h. A possible cause of this latter effect is discussed.

Milling of plant and soil material in plastic tubes, such as microcentrifuge tubes, over-estimates carbon (C) and under-estimates nitrogen (N) concentrations due to the introduction of polypropylene into milled samples, as identified using Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy.

This study compares C and N concentrations of roots and soil milled in microcentrifuge tubes versus stainless steel containers, demonstrating that a longer milling time, greater milling intensity, smaller sample size and inclusion of abrasive sample material all increase polypropylene contamination from plastic tubes leading to overestimation of C concentrations by up to 8 % (0.08 g g(-1)).

Erroneous estimations of C and N, and other analytes, must be assumed after milling in plastic tubes and milling methods should be adapted to minimise such error.

A new method combining electrospinning of SPEEK and direct spinning of CNT forests has been used to prepare sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)/directly spinnable carbon nanotube (dsCNT) composite proton exchange membranes. The SPEEK/dsCNT membrane is more robust than SPEEK alone, and in a fuel cell significantly outperforms both SPEEK and the commercial Nafion 212 membranes.
