Carboxyl-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been successfully radiolabelled with cobalt-57 (57Co) (T1/2 = 270 days) via the attachment of the bifunctional caged ligand MeAMN3S3sar. In this study MeAMN3S3sar has been synthesized and coupled to MWCNTs to form the conjugate MWCNT–MeAMN3S3sar. Synthesis was confirmed with nuclear magnetic resonance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the conjugation. Non-radioactive labelling of this conjugate was completed with Cu(II) ions to confirm the stability of the MeAMN3S3sar after coupling with the MWCNTs. The complexation of the Cu(II) was also confirmed with XPS. Transmission electron microscopy was used to demonstrate that the coupling reaction had a negligible effect on the size and shape of the MWCNTs. Radiolabelling of the MWCNT–MeAMN3S3sar conjugate and pristine (untreated) MWCNTs (non-specific) with the gamma-emitting radioactive isotope 57Co were compared. The radiolabelling efficiency of the MWCNT–MeAMN3S3sar conjugate was significantly higher (95% vs. 0.1%) (P ⩽ 0.001) than for the unconjugated pristine MWCNTs. This will allow for the potential tracking of nanoparticle movement in vitro and in vivo.

The abrasion seen on some of the retrieved CoCrMo hip joints has been reported to be caused by entrained hard particles in vivo. However, little work has been reported on the abrasion mechanisms of CoCrMo alloy in simulated body environments. Therefore. this study covers the mapping of micro-abrasion wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo induced by third body hard particles under a wide range of abrasive test conditions. This study has a specific focus on covering the possible in vivo wear modes seen on metal-on-metal (MoM) surfaces. Nano-indentation and nano-scratch tests were also employed to further investigate the secondary wear mechanisms-nano-scale material deformation that involved in micro-abrasion processes. This work addresses the potential detrimental effects of third body hard particles in vivo such as increased wear rates (debris generation) and corrosion (metal-ion release). The abrasive wear mechanisms of cast CoCrMo have been investigated under various wear-corrosion conditions employing two abrasives, SiC (similar to 4 mu m) and Al(2)O(3) (similar to 1 mu m), in two test solutions, 0.9% NaCl and 25% bovine serum. The specific wear rates, wear mechanisms and transitions between mechanisms are discussed in terms of the abrasive size, volume fraction and the test solutions deployed. The work shows that at high abrasive volume fractions, the presence of protein enhanced the wear loss due to the enhanced particle entrainment, whereas at much lower abrasive volume fractions, protein reduced the wear loss by acting as a boundary lubricant or rolling elements which reduced the abrasivity (load per particle) of the abrasive particles. The abrasive wear rate and wear mechanisms of the CoCrMo are dependent on the nature of the third body abrasives, their entrainment into the contact and the presence of the proteins. This paper brings together and analyzes recent work based on the interpretation of the electrochemical measurements made on a modified micro-abrasion-corrosion tester used in several research programmes. These programmes investigated the role of abradant size, test solution pH in abrasion-corrosion of biomaterials, the abrasion-corrosion performance of sintered and thermally sprayed tungsten carbide surfaces under downhole drilling environments and the abrasion-corrosion of UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel. Various abrasion tests were conducted under two-body grooving, three-body rolling and mixed grooving-rolling abrasion conditions, with and without abrasives, on cast F75 cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy in simulated body fluids, 2205 in chloride containing solutions as well as sprayed and sintered tungsten carbide surfaces in simulated downhole fluids. Pre- and post-test inspections based on optical and scanning electron microscopy analysis are used to help interpret the electrochemical response and current noise measurements made in situ during micro-abrasion-corrosion tests. The complex wear and corrosion mechanisms and their dependence on the microstructure and surface composition as a function of the pH, abrasive concentration, size and type are detailed and linked to the electrochemical signals. The electrochemical versus mechanical processes are plotted for different test parameters and this new approach is used to interpret tribo-corrosion test data to give greater insights into different tribo-corrosion systems. Thus new approaches to interpreting in-situ electrochemical responses to surfaces under different abrasive wear rates, different abrasives and liquid environments (pH and NaCl levels) are made. This representation is directly related to the mechano-electrochemical processes on the surface and avoids quantification of numerous synergistic, antagonistic and additive terms associated with repeat experiments. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare two different tooth replacement strategies for partially dentate older patients; namely functionally orientated treatment according to the principles of the shortened dental arch (SDA) and conventional treatment using removable partial dentures (RPDs) using a randomised controlled clinical trial. The primary outcome measure for this study was impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) measured using the short form of the oral health impact profile (OHIP-14).

METHODS: Patients aged 65 years and older were randomly allocated to two different treatment groups: the RPD group and the SDA group. For the RPD group each patient was restored to complete arches with cobalt-chromium RPDs used to replace missing teeth. For the SDA group, patients were restored to a premolar occlusion of 10 occluding pairs of natural and replacement teeth using resin bonded bridgework (RBB). OHRQoL was measured using the OHIP-14 questionnaire administered at baseline, 1 month, 6 months and 12 months after treatment intervention.

RESULTS: In total, 89 patients completed the RCT: 44 from the RPD group and 45 from the SDA group. Analysis using a mixed model of covariance (ANCOVA) illustrated that treatment according to the SDA concept resulted in significantly better mean OHIP-14 scores compared with RPD treatment (p<0.05). This result was replicated in both treatment centres used in the study.

CONCLUSIONS: In terms of impact on OHRQoL, treatment based on the SDA concept achieved significantly better results than that based on RPDs 12 months after treatment intervention (trial registration no. ISRCTN26302774).

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Functionally orientated treatment delivery resulted in significantly better outcomes compared to removable dentures in terms of impact on OHRQoL.

A swing-lock denture is useful in partially dentate patients where the configuration of the remaining teeth means that either the retention or stability available for a conventional removable partial denture is compromised. Such removable prostheses can also prove to be extremely useful when providing prosthodontic rehabilitation following surgical resection of oral cancer. A 20 year-old patient was referred to the Restorative Department of Cork University Dental Hospital following segmental mandibulectomy to treat a calicifying epithelial odontogenic tumour (Pindborg Tumour). Initial treatment using a conventional lower partial denture failed. This paper outlines the successfully rehabilitation using a lower Cobalt-Chromium swing-lock partial denture.

Objective: To compare caries incidence following two different tooth replacement strategies for partially dentate older patients; namely functionally orientated treatment according to the principles of the Shortened Dental Arch (SDA) and conventional treatment using Removable Partial Dentures (RPDs). Method:A randomised controlled clinical trial (RCT) was conducted of partially dentate patients aged 65 years and older. Patients were randomly allocated to two different treatment groups: the RPD group and the SDA group. Each member of the RPD group was restored to complete arches with cobalt-chromium RPDs used to replace missing teeth. Patients in the SDA group were restored to a shortened arch of 10 occluding pairs of natural and replacement teeth using adhesive bridgework. All of the operative treatment was completed by a single operator. Caries incidence was measured over a 2-year period following treatment intervention and recorded using the International Caries and Detection System (ICDAS). Result:In total, 89 patients completed the RCT (45 SDAs and 44 RPDs). Patients in the RPD group recorded a significantly higher incidence of new carious lesions (p<0.001) and recurrent carious lesions (p<0.001) compared to the SDA group. A mixed model of covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that treatment group (p<0.001) and co-morbidity (p<0.001) were significant predictors of caries incidence. Conclusion:Two years after provision of prosthodontic treatment there was a significantly higher incidence of new and recurrent caries lesions in subjects provided with RPDs compared with SDA treatment. This will have a significant impact on the ongoing maintenance costs for these two treatment groups.

Background: Maternal smoking is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for low birthweight, which is strongly associated with increased cardiometabolic disease risk in adulthood. Maternal smoking reduces the levels of the methyl donor vitamin B12 and is associated with altered DNA methylation at birth. Altered DNA methylation may be an important mechanism underlying increased disease susceptibility; however, the extent to which this can be induced in the developing fetus is unknown.

Methods: In this retrospective study, we measured concentrations of cobalt, vitamin B12, and mRNA transcripts encoding key enzymes in the 1-carbon cycle in 55 fetal human livers obtained from 11 to 21 weeks of gestation elective terminations and matched for gestation and maternal smoking. DNA methylation was measured at critical regions known to be susceptible to the in utero environment. Homocysteine concentrations were analyzed in plasma from 60 fetuses.

Results: In addition to identifying baseline sex differences, we found that maternal smoking was associated with sex-specific alterations of fetal liver vitamin B12, plasma homocysteine and expression of enzymes in the 1-carbon cycle in fetal liver. In the majority of the measured parameters which showed a sex difference, maternal smoking reduced the magnitude of that difference. Maternal smoking also altered DNA methylation at the imprinted gene IGF2 and the glucocorticoid receptor (GR/NR3C1).

Conclusions: Our unique data strengthen studies linking in utero exposures to altered DNA methylation by showing, for the first time, that such changes are present in fetal life and in a key metabolic target tissue, human fetal liver. Furthermore, these data propose a novel mechanism by which such changes are induced, namely through alterations in methyl donor availability and changes in 1-carbon metabolism.

Understanding and then designing efficient catalysts for CO oxidation at low temperature is one of the hottest topics in heterogeneous catalysis. Among the existing catalysts. Co3O4 is one of the most interesting systems: Morphology-controlled Co3O4 exhibits exceedingly high activity. In this study, by virtue of extensive density functional theory (OFT) calculations, the favored reaction mechanism in the system is identified. Through careful analyses on the energetics of elementary reactions on Co3O4(1 1 0)-A, Co3O4(1 1 0)-B, Co3O4(1 1 1) and Co3O4(1 0 0), which are the commonly exposed surfaces of Co3O4, we find the following regarding the relation between the activity and structure: (i) Co3+ is the active site rather than Co2+: and (ii) the three-coordinated surface oxygen bonded with three Co3+ may be slightly more reactive than the other two kinds of lattice oxygen, that is, the two-coordinated 0 bonded with one Co2+ and one Co3+ and the three-coordinated 0 bonded with one Co2+ and two Co3+. Following the results from Co3O4, we also extend the investigation to MnO2(1 1 0), Fe3O4(1 1 0), CuO(1 1 0) and CuO(1 1 1), which are the common metal oxide surfaces, aiming to understand the oxides in general. Three properties, such as the CO adsorption strength, the barrier of CO reacting with lattice 0 and the redox capacity, are identified to be the determining factors that can significantly affect the activity of oxides. Among these oxides, Co3O4 is found to be the most active one, stratifying all the three requirements. A new scheme to decompose barriers is introduced to understand the activity difference between lattice O-3c and O-2c on (1 1 0)-B surface. By utilizing the scheme, we demonstrate that the origin of activity variance lies in the geometric structures. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Transition metals are often introduced to a catalyst as promoters to improve catalytic performance. In this work, we study the promotion effect of transition metals on Co, the preferred catalytic metal for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis because of its good compromise of activity, selectivity and stability, for ethylene chemisorption using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, aiming to provide some insight into improving the alpha-olefin selectivity. In order to obtain the general trend of influence on ethylene chemisorption, twelve transition metals (Zr, Mn, Re, Ru, Rh, It, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au) are calculated. We find that the late transition metals (e.g. Pd and Cu) can decrease ethylene chemisorption energy. These results suggest that the addition of the late transition metals may improve alpha-olefin selectivity. Electronic structure analyses (both charge density distributions and density of states) are also performed and the understanding of calculated results is presented. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Selectivity is a fundamental issue in heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, the CH(4) selectivity in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is chosen to be investigated: CH4 selectivity on Rh, Co, Ru, Fe, and Re surfaces is computed by first-principles methods. In conjunction with kinetic analyses, we are able to derive the effective barrier difference between methane formation and chain growth (Delta E(eff)) to quantify the CH(4) selectivity. By using this energy descriptor, the ranking of methane selectivity predicted from density functional theory (DFT) calculations is consistent with experimental work. Moreover, a linear correlation between Delta E(eff) and the chemisorption energy of C + 4H (Delta H) is found. This fundamental finding possesses the following significance: (i) it shows that the selectivity, which appears to have kinetic characteristics, is largely determined by thermodynamic properties; and (ii) it suggests that an increase of the binding strength of C + 4H will suppress methane selectivity.

As the potassium fractional coverage of a cobalt {1010BAR} surface is increased over the range 0.2 to 0.6 monolayer the adlayer passes through a series of phase transitions. A commensurate phase is formed at exactly 0.5 monolayer, and corresponds to adatoms bonded in high-symmetry hollow sites on the unreconstructed cobalt surface, with an effective adatom radius lying between the ionic and covalent radii of potassium. A detailed structural study shows that the structural transitions can be characterised within a one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model, with small lateral displacements of adatoms away from hollow sites in the low and high coverage phases. The low coverage phases progress from a distributed vacancy structure to a low density domain-wall structure; while the high coverage phase formed above half a monolayer is a high density asymmetric domain-wall structure.

The surface structure of the clean Co{1010BAR} surface and a c(2 x 2) potassium overlayer have been determined by quantitative low energy electron diffraction. The Co{1010BAR} sample has been shown to be laterally unreconstructed with the surface being uniquely terminated by an outermost closely packed double layer (dz12 = 0.68 angstrom). A damped oscillatory relaxation of the outermost three atomic layers occurs, with relaxations DELTA-dz12 = -6.5 +/- 2% and DELTA-dz23 = +1.0 +/- 2%.

The c(2 x 2) overlayer formed at a coverage of 0.5 ML was subjected to a full I-V analysis. A range of adsorption sites were tested including fourfold hollow, on-top, and both long and short bridge sites in combination with both "long" and "short" cobalt interlayer terminations. A clear preference was found for adsorption in the maximal coordination fourfold hollow site. No switching of surface termination occurs. The potassium adatoms reside in the [1210BAR] surface channels directly above second layer cobalt atoms with a potassium to outermost cobalt interlayer separation of 2.44 +/- 0.05 angstrom. Potassium-cobalt bond lengths of 3.40 +/- 0.05 and 3.12 +/- 0.05 angstrom between the four (one) outermost (second) layer nearest-neighbour substrate atoms suggests a potassium effective radius of 1.87 +/- 0.05 angstrom, somewhat smaller than the Pauling covalent radius and considerably larger than the ionic radius (1.38 angstrom). The alkali-surface bonding is thus predominantly "covalent"/"metallic".

The microstructural evolution during short-term (up to 3000 hours) thermal exposure of three 9/12Cr heat-resistant steels was studied, as well as the mechanical properties after exposure. The tempered martensitic lath structure, as well as the precipitation of carbide and MX type carbonitrides in the steel matrix, was stable after 3000 hours of exposure at 873 K (600 °C). A microstructure observation showed that during the short-term thermal exposure process, the change of mechanical properties was caused mainly by the formation and growth of Laves-phase precipitates in the steels. On thermal exposure, with an increase of cobalt and tungsten contents, cobalt could promote the segregation of tungsten along the martensite lath to form Laves phase, and a large size and high density of Laves-phase precipitates along the grain boundaries could lead to the brittle intergranular fracture of the steels.

It is crucial to develop a catalyst made of earth-abundant elements highly active for a complete oxidation of methane at a relatively low temperature. NiCo2O4 consisting of earth-abundant elements which can completely oxidize methane in the temperature range of 350-550 °C. Being a cost-effective catalyst, NiCo2O4 exhibits activity higher than precious-metal-based catalysts. Here we report that the higher catalytic activity at the relatively low temperature results from the integration of nickel cations, cobalt cations and surface lattice oxygen atoms/oxygen vacancies at the atomic scale. In situ studies of complete oxidation of methane on NiCo2O4 and theoretical simulations show that methane dissociates to methyl on nickel cations and then couple with surface lattice oxygen atoms to form -CH3O with a following dehydrogenation to -CH2O; a following oxidative dehydrogenation forms CHO; CHO is transformed to product molecules through two different sub-pathways including dehydrogenation of OCHO and CO oxidation.

Aims: This study aimed to gain insight into patient’s perceptions of natural tooth loss and explored their experiences of oral rehabilitation according to a functionally orientated approach (SDA) and Removable Partial Dentures (RPD).
Study Design: For this qualitative study, a purposive sample of 15 partially dentate older patients
were recruited from Cork Dental School and Hospital. These patients had previously participated in a randomised controlled clinical trial (RCT) where they were provided with either SDA treatment using adhesive bridgework or provided with Cobalt Chromium framework RPDs. In- depth interviews were undertaken and thematic analysis was utilised to interpret the data.
Results: The findings of this study indicated strong satisfaction with SDA treatment. Patients referred to the ease in which they adapted to the adhesive prostheses as they were “lightweight”, “neat” and “fixed”. Irrespective of treatment option, patients indicated that they felt
their new prostheses were durable and an improvement on previous treatments. Most patients indicated that, previous to the RCT, they had not attended a general dentist for a number of years and only then for acute issues. They had concerns that treatment which was provided to them as part of the RCT would not be available to them in primary care. Interestingly, although they do not want their condition to dis-improve, if their prostheses failed they stated that they would not seek alternative treatment but would revert back
to adopting previous coping mechanisms.
Conclusion: This study illustrates that partially dentate older patients were very satisfied with oral rehabilitation according to a functionally orientated approach. Unfortunately they did not believe that this treatment would currently be made available to them in a primary care setting.
