Double slits have been incorporated in a flat field spectrometer to record spatially resolved and integrated spectra simultaneously. Variation of the absorbed irradiance and ionisation stage along the fibre plasmas has been monitored. By comparison of the spatially resolved and integrated resonance line ratios, it is found that the spatially integrated values deviated significantly from the real experimental circumstances due to nonuniformity along the plasmas.

In an immunocytochemical study, using an antiserum and a monoclonal antibody specific for the amino acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), GABA-like immunoreactivity (GLIR) has been demonstrated for the first time in parasitic flatworms. In Moniezia expansa (Cestoda), GLIR was seen in nerve nets which were closely associated with the body wall musculature and in the longitudinal nerve cords. In the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica (Trematoda), the GLIR occurred in the longitudinal nerve cords and lateral nerves in the posterior half of the worm. GLIR was also detected in subtegumental fibres in F. hepatica. The presence of GABA was verified, using high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detection. The concentration of GABA (mean+/-S.D.) in M. expansa anterior region was 124.8+/-15.3 picomole/mg wet weight, while in F. hepatica it was 16.8+/-4.9 picomole/mg. Since several insecticides and anti-nematodal drugs are thought to interfere with GABA-receptors, the findings indicate that GABAergic neurotransmission may be a potential target for chemotherapy in flatworms too.

Surface treatments are used as part of either a maintenance programme or repair work. In both cases, they provide additional protection to the concrete by either arresting or reducing the penetration of aggressive substances from the environment, Numerous materials are available for this purpose and their inherent generic properties differ considerably. Quite often this poses difficulties to practising engineers when selecting a surface treatment for a specific situation, In this review an attempt is made to explain the protective aspects of various surface treatments so that their selection can be made easier, The basic aspects of surface treatments are discussed: function, classification and performance requirements.

BACKGROUND: We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify common risk variants for schizophrenia. METHODS: The discovery scan included 1606 patients and 1794 controls from Ireland, using 6,212,339 directly genotyped or imputed single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A subset of this sample (270 cases and 860 controls) was subsequently included in the Psychiatric GWAS Consortium-schizophrenia GWAS meta-analysis. RESULTS: One hundred eight SNPs were taken forward for replication in an independent sample of 13,195 cases and 31,021 control subjects. The most significant associations in discovery, corrected for genomic inflation, were (rs204999, p combined = 1.34 × 10(-9) and in combined samples (rs2523722 p combined = 2.88 × 10(-16)) mapped to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region. We imputed classical human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles at the locus; the most significant finding was with HLA-C*01:02. This association was distinct from the top SNP signal. The HLA alleles DRB1*03:01 and B*08:01 were protective, replicating a previous study. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides further support for involvement of MHC class I molecules in schizophrenia. We found evidence of association with previously reported risk alleles at the TCF4, VRK2, and ZNF804A loci.

Using reversed-phase HPLC in combination with a radioimmunoassay for ovine corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), a peptide with CRH-like immunoreactivity was isolated in pure form from an extract of the caudal spinal cord region of the spotted dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula. The primary structure of the peptide was established as Pro-Ala-Glu-Thr-Pro-Asn-Ser-Leu-Asp-Leu(10)-Thr-Phe-His-Leu-Leu-Arg-Glu-Met-Ile-Glu(20)-Ile-Ala-Lys-His-Glu-Asn-Gln-Gln-Met-Gln(30)-Ala-Asp-Ser-Asn-Arg-Arg-Ile-Met-Asp-Thr(40)-Ile . NH2. This amino acid sequence shows moderate structural similarity to Catostomus urotensin I (51%) and to human CRH (56%). The data provide, therefore, chemical evidence to support the conclusions of earlier immunohistochemical studies that the diffuse caudal neurosecretory system of elasmobranchs produces a peptide that is immunochemically related to teleost urotensin I peptides. However, the primary structure of urotensin I has been poorly conserved during evolution. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

Urotensin II (UII) is traditionally regarded as a product of the neurosecretory cells in the caudal portion of the spinal cord of jawed fishes. A peptide related to UII has been recently isolated from the frog brain, thereby providing the first evidence that UII is also present in the central nervous system of a tetrapod. In the present study, we have investigated the distribution of UII-immunoreactive elements in the brain and spinal cord of the frog Rana ridibunda by immunofluorescence using an antiserum directed against the conserved cyclic region of the peptide. Two distinct populations of UII-immunoreactive perikarya were visualized. The first group of positive neurons was found in the nucleus hypoglossus of the medulla oblongata, which controls two striated muscles of the tongue. The second population of immunoreactive cell bodies was represented by a subset of motoneurons that were particularly abundant in the caudal region of the cord (34% of the motoneuron population). The telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon, and metencephalon were totally devoid of UII-containing cell bodies but displayed dense networks of UII-immunoreactive fibers, notably in the thalamus, the tectum, the tegmentum, and the granular layer of the cerebellum. In addition, a dense bundle of long varicose processes projecting rostrocaudally was observed coursing along the ventral surface of the brain from the midtelencephalon to the medulla oblongata. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of frog brain, medulla oblongata, and spinal cord extracts revealed that, in all three regions, UII-immunoreactive material eluted as a single peak which exhibited the same retention time as synthetic frog UII. Taken together, these data indicate that UII, in addition to its neuroendocrine functions in fish, is a potential regulatory peptide in the central nervous system of amphibians.
