A superlens based on a single aluminum layer operating at deep ultraviolet UV wavelengths is investigated both, theoretically and experimentally. Using a wavelength of 157 nm double slits with a center-to-center separation of only 70 nm were experimentally resolved and simulations indicate a possible resolution down to 29 nm with experimentally feasible arrangements. The results demonstrate the significance of aluminum as plasmonic material for the deep UV.

Fibroblast activation protein-a (FAP-a) promotes tumor growth and cell invasiveness through extracellular matrix degradation. How ultraviolet radiation (UVR), the major risk factor for malignant melanoma, influences the expression of FAP-a is unknown. We examined the effect of UVR on FAP-a expression in melanocytes, keratinocytes and fibroblasts from the skin and in melanoma cells. UVR induces upregulation of FAP-a in fibroblasts, melanocytes and primary melanoma cells (PM) whereas keratinocytes and metastatic melanoma cells remained FAP-a negative. UVA and UVB stimulated FAP-a-driven migration and invasion in fibroblasts, melanocytes and PM. In co-culture systems UVR of melanocytes, PM and cells from regional metastases upregulated FAP-a in fibroblasts but only supernatants from non-irradiated PM were able to induce FAP-a in fibroblasts. Further, UV-radiated melanocytes and PM significantly increased FAP-a expression in fibroblasts through secretory crosstalk via Wnt5a, PDGF-BB and TGF-ß1. Moreover, UV radiated melanocytes and PM increased collagen I invasion and migration of fibroblasts. The FAP-a/DPPIV inhibitor Gly-ProP(OPh)2 significantly decreased this response implicating FAP-a/DPPIV as an important protein complex in cell migration and invasion. These experiments suggest a functional association between UVR and FAP-a expression in fibroblasts, melanocytes and melanoma cells implicating that UVR of malignant melanoma converts fibroblasts into FAP-a expressing and ECM degrading fibroblasts thus facilitating invasion and migration. The secretory crosstalk between melanoma and tumor surrounding fibroblasts is mediated via PDGF-BB, TGF-ß1 and Wnt5a and these factors should be evaluated as targets to reduce FAP-a activity and prevent early melanoma dissemination.

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of a luminous Type IIP Supernova (SN) 2009kf discovered by the Pan-STARRS 1 (PS1) survey and also detected by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The SN shows a plateau in its optical and bolometric light curves, lasting approximately 70 days in the rest frame, with an absolute magnitude of M-V = - 18.4 mag. The P-Cygni profiles of hydrogen indicate expansion velocities of 9000 km s(-1) at 61 days after discovery which is extremely high for a Type IIP SN. SN 2009kf is also remarkably bright in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) and shows a slow evolution 10-20 days after optical discovery. The NUV and optical luminosity at these epochs can be modeled with a blackbody with a hot effective temperature (T similar to 16,000 K) and a large radius (R similar to 1 x 10(15) cm). The bright bolometric and NUV luminosity, the light curve peak and plateau duration, the high velocities, and temperatures suggest that 2009kf is a Type IIP SN powered by a larger than normal explosion energy. Observations of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emission from an X-class solar flare that occurred on 2011 February 15 at 01: 44 UT are presented, obtained using the EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The complete EVE spectral range covers the free-bound continua of H I (Lyman continuum), He I, and He II, with recombination edges at 91.2, 50.4, and 22.8 nm, respectively. By fitting the wavelength ranges blueward of each recombination edge with an exponential function, light curves of each of the integrated continua were generated over the course of the flare, as was emission from the free-free continuum (6.5-37 nm). The He II 30.4 nm and Ly alpha 121.6 nm lines, and soft X-ray (SXR; 0.1-0.8 nm) emission from GOES are also included for comparison. Each free-bound continuum was found to have a rapid rise phase at the flare onset similar to that seen in the 25-50 keV light curves from RHESSI, suggesting that they were formed by recombination with free electrons in the chromosphere. However, the free-free emission exhibited a slower rise phase seen also in the SXR emission from GOES, implying a predominantly coronal origin. By integrating over the entire flare the total energy emitted via each process was determined. We find that the flare energy in the EVE spectral range amounts to at most a few percent of the total flare energy, but EVE gives us a first comprehensive look at these diagnostically important continuum components.

The temporal development of laser driven single mode perturbations in thin A1 foils has been measured using extreme ultraviolet (XUV) laser radiography. 15, 30, 70 and 90 mu m single modes were imprinted on 2 mu m thick A1 foils with an optical driver laser at 527 nm for intensities in the range 5 x 10(12) to 1.5 x 10(13) W cm(-2). The magnitude of the imprinted perturbation at the time of shock break out was determined by fitting to the data estimated curves of growth of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability after shock break out. The efficiency of imprinting is independent of perturbation wavelength in the parameter range of this experiment, suggesting little influence of thermal conduction smoothing. The results are of interest for directly driven inertially confined fusion. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

We analyze Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) spectra in the 1150-1700 Angstrom wavelength range obtained for six early B supergiants in the neighboring galaxy M31. Because of their likely high ( nearly solar) abundance, these stars were originally chosen to be directly comparable to their Galactic counterparts and represent a much needed addition to our current sample of B-type supergiants, in our efforts to study the dependence of the wind momentum-luminosity relationship on spectral type and metallicity. As a first step to determine wind momenta we fit the P Cygni profiles of the resonance lines of N V, Si IV, and C IV with standard methods and derive terminal velocities for all of the STIS targets. From these lines we also derive ionic stellar wind column densities. Our results are compared with those obtained previously in Galactic supergiants and confirm earlier claims of

We have observed extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) ''line-free'' continuum emission from laser plasmas of high atomic number elements using targets irradiated with 248 nm laser pulses of 7 ps duration at a power density of similar to 10(13) W/cm(2). Using both dispersive spectroscopy and streak camera detection, the spectral and temporal evolution of XUV continuum emission for several target atomic numbers has been measured on a time scale with an upper limit of several hundred picoseconds limited by amplified spontaneous emission. Experiments were performed in which intense laser pulses (up to 9x10(19) W/cm(2)) were used to irradiate very thin (submicron) mass-limited aluminum foil targets. Such interactions generated high-order harmonic radiation (greater than the 25th order) which was detected at the rear of the target and which was significantly broadened, modulated, and depolarized because of passage through the dense relativistic plasma. The spectral modifications are shown to be due to the laser absorption into hot electrons and the subsequent sharply increasing relativistic electron component within the dense plasma.

We present results of experiments studying the efficiency of high harmonic generation from a gas target using the TITANIA krypton fluoride laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The variation of harmonic yield for the 7th to 13th harmonics (355-191 Angstrom) is studied as a function of the backing pressure of a solenoid valve gas jet and of the axial position of the laser focus relative to the centre of the gas jet nozzle. Harmonic energies up to 1 mu J were produced in helium and neon targets from laser energies of approximately 200 mJ. This corresponds to absolute conversion efficiencies of up to 5 x 10(-6).

Recently using KrF high power laser (248 nm; 350 fs; 5.0x10(16) W/cm(2)) in the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory an experimental search for recombination extreme ultraviolet (XUV) laser action in Li-like nitrogen ions was performed. To understand the experimental results of line emission at 24.7 nm in the 3d(5/2)-2p(3/2) transition of the Li-like nitrogen ion a simulation was undertaken using a one-dimensional Lagrangian hydrodynamic code. From the simulation results, we confirmed that there was nonlinear dependence of spectral line emission on the gas density which was well matched to the experimental results. Only a six times increase of the 24.7 nm emission intensity was obtained when the plasma length was increased 1000 times from 1 mu m as an optically thin case to 1 mm. Also, the spatial profile of the electron density and temperature was obtained and the electron temperature was about 40-50 eV which was too high for the optical field ionization x-ray lasing. We could not find evidence of x-ray laser gain. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
