The electroless nickel composite (ENC) with various silicon carbide contents was deposited onto aluminium alloy (LM24) substrate. The wear behaviour and the microhardness of the composite coating samples were investigated and compared with particles free and aluminium substrate samples using micro-scale abrasion tester and microhardness tester respectively. The wear scar marks and wear volume were analysed by optical microscope. The wear tracks were further studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The embedded particles were found to get pressed into the matrix which helps resisting further wearing process for composite samples. However, random orientation of microcuts and microfallow were seen for ENC sample but more uniform wearing was observed for EN sample. The composite coating with low content of SiC was worn minimum. Early penetration into the substrate was seen for samples with higher SiC content. Microhardness was improved after heat treatment for all the samples containing various SiC content. Under dry sliding condition, inclusion of particles in the matrix did not improve the wearing resistance performance in as-deposited state. The wearing worsened as the content of the particles increased generally. However, on heat treatment, the composite coatings exhibited improved wear resistance and the best result was obtained from the one with low particle contents.

In recent years, wide-field sky surveys providing deep multi-band imaging have presented a new path for indirectly characterizing the progenitor populations of core-collapse supernovae (SN): systematic light curve studies. We assemble a set of 76 grizy-band Type IIP SN light curves from Pan-STARRS1, obtained over a constant survey program of 4 years and classified using both spectroscopy and machine learning-based photometric techniques. We develop and apply a new Bayesian model for the full multi-band evolution of each light curve in the sample. We find no evidence of a sub-population of fast-declining explosions (historically referred to as "Type IIL" SNe). However, we identify a highly significant relation between the plateau phase decay rate and peak luminosity among our SNe IIP. These results argue in favor of a single parameter, likely determined by initial stellar mass, predominantly controlling the explosions of red supergiants. This relation could also be applied for supernova cosmology, offering a standardizable candle good to an intrinsic scatter of 0.2 mag. We compare each light curve to physical models from hydrodynamic simulations to estimate progenitor initial masses and other properties of the Pan-STARRS1 Type IIP SN sample. We show that correction of systematic discrepancies between modeled and observed SN IIP light curve properties and an expanded grid of progenitor properties, are needed to enable robust progenitor inferences from multi-band light curve samples of this kind. This work will serve as a pathfinder for photometric studies of core-collapse SNe to be conducted through future wide field transient searches.

Radiocarbon dating forms the basis for many Late Quaternary chronologies but, due to the fluctuations in atmospheric levels of 14C, radiocarbon dates require calibration before they can be compared and/or combined with date estimates derived from other dating techniques. New and recently published 14C measurements on independently dated material, such as speleothems, foraminifera, coral and tree-rings, allow the IntCal Working Group to make new estimates of the radiocarbon calibration curves and provide the opportunity to evaluate the offsets observed between records. In addition floating tree-ring 14C chronologies, which are not absolutely dendro-dated, provide evidence for the magnitude of atmospheric 14C variations in different time periods which can be used to refine the calibration curves.

We present the Coordinated Synoptic Investigation of NGC 2264, a continuous 30 day multi-wavelength photometric monitoring campaign on more than 1000 young cluster members using 16 telescopes. The unprecedented combination of multi-wavelength, high-precision, high-cadence, and long-duration data opens a new window into the time domain behavior of young stellar objects. Here we provide an overview of the observations, focusing on results from Spitzer and CoRoT. The highlight of this work is detailed analysis of 162 classical T Tauri stars for which we can probe optical and mid-infrared flux variations to 1% amplitudes and sub-hour timescales. We present a morphological variability census and then use metrics of periodicity, stochasticity, and symmetry to statistically separate the light curves into seven distinct classes, which we suggest represent different physical processes and geometric effects. We provide distributions of the characteristic timescales and amplitudes and assess the fractional representation within each class. The largest category (>20%) are optical "dippers" with discrete fading events lasting ~1-5 days. The degree of correlation between the optical and infrared light curves is positive but weak; notably, the independently assigned optical and infrared morphology classes tend to be different for the same object. Assessment of flux variation behavior with respect to (circum)stellar properties reveals correlations of variability parameters with Hα emission and with effective temperature. Overall, our results point to multiple origins of young star variability, including circumstellar obscuration events, hot spots on the star and/or disk, accretion bursts, and rapid structural changes in the inner disk. Based on data from the Spitzer and CoRoT missions. The CoRoT space mission was developed and is operated by the French space agency CNES, with participation of ESA's RSSD and Science Programmes, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, and Spain.

Software-programmable `soft' processors have shown tremendous potential for efficient realisation of high performance signal processing operations on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), whilst lowering the design burden by avoiding the need to design fine-grained custom circuit archi-tectures. However, the complex data access patterns, high memory bandwidth and computational requirements of sliding window applications, such as Motion Estimation (ME) and Matrix Multiplication (MM), lead to low performance, inefficient soft processor realisations. This paper resolves this issue, showing how by adding support for block data addressing and accelerators for high performance loop execution, performance and resource efficiency over four times better than current best-in-class metrics can be achieved. In addition, it demonstrates the first recorded real-time soft ME estimation realisation for H.263 systems.

The investigation is focused on the wear behaviour at elevated test temperature of composite Ni–P/SiC deposit, with varying concentration of the reinforcing SiC particles. The phase evolution measured by X-ray diffraction suggests slight crystallisation during wear testing at 200 °C. In coating without reinforcing particles, adhesive wear is accompanied by microcracks. The thermal heat generated and the cyclic loading could have induced sub-surface microcracks. Owing to the effective matrix-ceramics system in composite coatings, fine grooves, abrasive polishing and uniform wearing are observed. Reinforcing particles in the matrix hinder microcrack formation and significantly reduce the wear rate. Triboxidation is confirmed from energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry.
