Tunnel ionization of room-temperature D-2 in an ultrashort (12 femtosecond) near infrared (800 nm) pump laser pulse excites a vibrational wavepacket in the D-2(+) ions; a rotational wavepacket is also excited in residual D-2 molecules. Both wavepacket types are collapsed a variable time later by an ultrashort probe pulse. We isolate the vibrational wavepacket and quantify its evolution dynamics through theoretical comparison. Requirements for quantum computation (initial coherence and quantum state retrieval) are studied using this well-defined (small number of initial states at room temperature, initial wavepacket spatially localized) single-electron molecular prototype by temporally stretching the pump and probe pulses.

The nature of the surface species formed at the surface of 2 wt.% Pt/CeO2 catalyst during the forward water-gas-shift (WGS, CO + H2O -> CO2 + H-2) and the reverse reaction (RWGS) were essentially identical. More, the surface concentration of formate, carbonate and carbonyl species was similar in each case. The presence of well-resolved IR bands allowed an unequivocal relative quantitative analysis of each species, avoiding the use of the carboxylate stretching region (1600-1200 cm(-1)). However, the quantitative analysis in the case of an isotopic study was complicated due to the overlapping of the various isotope bands, yet this problem could be overcome by integrating the high-wavenumber part of the bands. The reactivity of the surface species formed under RWGS conditions was followed under two different gaseous streams. Firstly, the reactivity of these intermediates were followed under an inert gas (i.e., At), in which case carbonates were essentially stable and less reactive than formates. Secondly, the reactivity of the same surface species was followed when switching to the corresponding C-13-labelled feed (i.e., (CO2)-C-13 + H-2), in which case carbonates were exchanged significantly faster than formates. While carbonates species have been reported as reaction intermediate under reaction conditions, the increased stability or surface poisoning by these carbonates in the absence of reaction mixture was highlighted. Ultimately, this work re-emphasises the need to use steady-state conditions if the true operando reactivity of the adsorbates and structure of the solid are to be determined. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Polymer nanocomposites offer the potential of enhanced properties such as increased modulus and barrier properties to the end user. Much work has been carried out on the effects of extrusion conditions on melt processed nanocomposites but very little research has been conducted on the use of polymer nanocomposites in semi-solid forming processes such as thermoforming and injection blow molding. These processes are used to make much of today’s packaging, and any improvements in performance such as possible lightweighting due to increased modulus would bring signi?cant bene?ts both economically and environmentally. The work described here looks at the biaxial deformation of polypropylene–clay nanocomposites under industrial forming conditions in order to determine if the presence of clay affects processability, structure and mechanical properties of the stretched material. Melt compounded polypropylene/clay composites in sheet form were biaxially stretched at a variety of processing conditions to examine the effect of high temperature, high strain and high strain rate processing on sheet structure
and properties.
A biaxial test rig was used to carry out the testing which imposed conditions on the sheet that are representative of those applied in injection blow molding and thermoforming. Results show that the presence of clay increases the yield stress relative to the un?lled material at typical processing temperatures and that the sensitivity of the yield stress to temperature is greater for the ?lled material. The stretching process is found to have a signi?cant effect on the delamination and alignment of clay particles (as observed by TEM) and on yield stress and elongation at break of the stretched sheet.

The adsorption of a metal monolayer on a foreign substrate generates a change in the surface stress. We calculate this change for a number of substrate/adsorbate systems using the embedded-atom method. The results are compared with those obtained from a continuum model. A cycle, in which the stretching of a substrate/adsorbate system is decomposed into several steps, helps in understanding the numerical results. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new type of near-infrared emitting rare-earth complex has been synthesised, consisting of three bis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline molecule. The chelate rings formed by the rare-earth ion and the bidentate ligands do not contain any carbon atoms and can hence be considered as 'inorganic' chelate rings. The absence of C-H stretching vibration modes in the first coordination sphere of the rare-earth ion and the presence of a light-harvesting moiety (1,10-phenanthroline) bound to the rare-earth ion result in a complex that can be efficiently excited and exhibits intense near-infrared luminescence. Semi-solid forming processes such as thermoforming and injection blow moulding are used to make much of today’s packaging. As for most packaging there is a drive to reduce product weight and improve properties such as barrier performance. Polymer nanocomposites offer the possibility of increased modulus
(and hence potential product light weighting) as well as improved barrier properties and are the subject of much research attention. In this particular study, polypropylene–clay nanocomposite sheets produced via biaxial deformation are investigated and the structure of the nanocomposites is quantitatively determined in order to gain a better understanding of the influence of the composite structure on mechanical properties. Compression moulded sheets of polypropylene and polypropylene/Cloisite 15A nanocomposite (5 wt.%) were biaxially stretched to different stretching ratios, and then the structure of
the nanocomposite was examined using XRD and TEM techniques. Different stretching ratios produced different degrees of exfoliation and orientation of the clay tactoids. The sheet properties were then investigated using DSC, DMTA, and tensile tests .It was found that regardless of the degree of exfoliation or
orientation, the addition of clay has no effect on percentage crystallinity or melting temperature, but it has an effect on the crystallization temperature and on the crystal size distribution. DMTA and tensile tests show that both the degree of exfoliation and the degree of orientation positively correlate with the dynamic mechanical properties and the tensile properties of the sheet.

Keloid scars are common benign fibroproliferative reticular dermal lesions with unknown etiology and ill-defined management with high rate of recurrence post surgery. The progression of keloids is characterized by increased deposition of extracellular matrix proteins, invasion into the surrounding healthy skin and inflammation. Fibroblasts are considered to be the key cellular mediators of fibrogenesis in keloid scars. Fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP-a) and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) are proteases located at the plasma membrane promoting cell invasiveness and tumor growth and have been previously associated with keloid scars. Therefore, in this study we analyzed in further detail the expression of FAP-a in keloid fibroblasts compared to control skin fibroblasts. Dermal fibroblasts were obtained from punch-biopsies from the active margin of four keloids and four control skin samples. Flow cytometry was used to analyze FAP-a expression and the CytoSelect(®) 24-Well Collagen I Cell Invasion Assay was applied to study fibroblast invasion. Secretion of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins was investigated by multiplexed particle-based flow cytometric assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We found an increased expression of FAP-a in keloid fibroblasts compared to control skin fibroblasts (p

Thermal properties of an idealised tetrahedral network model of silica are investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. The interatomic potential consists of anharmonic stretching and bending terms, plus a short range repulsion. The model includes a bond interchange rule similar to the well known Wooten, Winer and Weaire (WWW) algorithm (see Phys. Rev. Lett., 1985, 54, 1392). Simulations reveal an apparent first order melting transition at T = 2200 K. The computed changes in the local coordination upon melting are consistent with experimental and ab initio data.

The inclusion of a synthetic fluoromica clay in PET affects its processability via biaxial stretching and stretching temperature (95 °C and 102 °C) and strain rate (1 s-1 and 2 s-1) influence the structuring and properties of the stretched material. The inclusion of clay has little effect on the temperature operating window for the PET–clay but it has a major effect on deformation behaviour which will necessitate the use of much higher forming forces during processing. The strain hardening behaviour of both the filled and unfilled materials is well correlated with tensile strength and tensile modulus. Increasing the stretching temperature to reduce stretching forces has a detrimental effect on clay exfoliation, mechanical and O2 barrier properties. Increasing strain rate has a lesser effect on the strain hardening behaviour of the PET–clay compared with the pure PET and this is attributed to possible adiabatic heating in the PET–clay sample at the higher strain rate. The Halpin–Tsai model is shown to accurately predict the modulus enhancement of the PET–clay materials when a modified particle modulus rather than nominal clay modulus is used.

Nanocomposites of poly(ethylene terephthalate) PET with a partially synthetic fluoromica were prepared by melt mixing and extruded into sheet and subjected to large-scale biaxial stretching. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis of the mica tactoids showed that biaxial stretching had caused the tactoids to be more orientated and with improved exfoliation. The moduli of the nanocomposites were enhanced with increasing mica loading and the reinforcement effect was higher when the stretch ratio was 2 or 2.5, accommodated by having more aligned tactoids and reduced agglomeration. Enhancement in modulus was less pronounced for a stretch ratio of 3. Storage modulus was enhanced more significantly above the glass transition temperature. The barrier properties were enhanced by addition of mica before and after stretching. The Halpin-Tsai theory underpredicted the relative modulus of the PET nanocomposites, whereas the Nielsen model over-predicted the relative permeability. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2012. The syntheses of 2,2'-bipyridin-5-ylmethyl-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate (L1) and N-(2,2'-bipyridin-5-ylmethyl)-5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanamide (L2) and their neutral fac carbonylrhenium(I) complexes [Re(L1)(CO)(3)Br] and [Re(L2)(CO)(3)Br] are reported. The. electronic absorption and emission spectra of the complexes are similar to the spectrum of the reference compound [Re(bipy)(CO)(3)Br] and correlate well with the density functional theory calculations undertaken. The surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) spectra (excited at both 532 and 785 nm) of the ligands and complexes were examined and compared to the spectrum of ethyl 5-(1,2-dithiolan-3-yl)pentanoate (L3), revealing that there is very little contribution to the spectra of these species from the dithiolated alkyl chains. The spectra are dominated by the characteristic peaks of a metalated 2,2'-bipyridyl group, arising from the silver colloid/ion complexation, and the rhenium center. The rhenium complexes show weak SERS bands related to the CO stretches and a broad band at 510 cm(-1) assigned to Re-CO stretching. Concentration dependent studies, measured by the relative intensity of several assigned peaks, indicate that, as the surface coverage increases, the bipyridine moiety lifts off the surface In the case of L1 and L2, this gives rise to complexes with silver at low concentration, enhancing the signals observed, while for the tricarbonylbromorhenium complexes of these ligands, the presence of the disulfide tether allows an enhancement in the limits of detection of these surface-borne species of 20 times in the case of [ReL2(CO)(3)Br] over [Re(bipy)(CO)(3)Br].

Raman spectroelectrochemical and X-ray crystallographic studies have been made for the binuclear copper(I) complex, [(Ph(3)P)(2)Cu(dpq)Cu(PPh(3))(2)][BF4](2), where dpq is the bridging ligand 2,3-di(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline. The X-ray data show that the pyridine rings are twisted out of plane with respect to the quinoxaline ring which is itself non-planar. The UV/VIS spectra of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state and those of the electrochemically reduced complex are similar. The resonance-Raman spectrum of the latter species exhibits little change in the frequency of the pyridinylquinoxaline inter-ring C-C bond stretching mode, compared to the ground electronic state. This suggests minimum change in the inter-ring C-C bond order in the electrochemically or charge-transfer generated radical anion. Semiempirical molecular-orbital calculations on both the neutral dpq and radical anion show two near-degenerate lowest unoccupied orbitals in the neutral species. One is strongly bonding across the inter-ring C-C bond while the other is almost nun-bonding. The Raman data suggest that it is this latter orbital which is populated in the transient and electrochemical experiments.

Time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy of the lowest energy excited state of the 4,4'-bipyridyl ligand-bridged complex, [(CO)(5)W(L)W(CO5] (1), and Raman spectroscopy of electrochemically reduced 1, both give bands characteristic of the the L(.-) species. This confirms that the ligand L is negatively charged in the lowest energy exicited state which is therefore metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) in character. Raman spectra of the radical anion of 1 excited in the far red (800 nm) exhibited a band near 2050 cm(-1) due to a vco symmetric CO stretching mode, compared to the corresponding band at 2070 cm(-1) in the spectrum of the parent, uncharged complex. The lower vco in the reduced complex supports the recent finding by time-resolved IR spectroscopy of a similar frequency decrease for nu(CO) in the longest lived (MLCT) excited state of 1 which was attributed to electron/hole localisation in this state on the IR time scale.

Nanosecond time-resolved absorption (TA), resonance Raman (TR(3)), and infrared (TRIR) spectra are reported for several complexes [Ru(X)(R)(CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)] (X = Cl, Br, I; R = Me, Et; alpha-diimine = N,N'-diisopropyl-1,4-diaza-1,3-butadiene (iPr-DAB), pyridine-2-carbaldehyde-N-isopropylimine (iPr-PyCa), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy)). This is the first instance in which the TA, TR(3), and TRIR techniques have been used to probe excited states in the same series of complexes. The TA spectra of the iodide complexes show a transient absorption between 550 and 700 nm, which does not depend on the solvent but shifts to lower energy in the order iPr-DAB > bpy > iPr-PyCa. This band is assigned to an intraligand transition. For the corresponding chloride and bromide complexes this band occurs at higher energy, most probably because of a change of character of the lowest excited state from XLCT to MLCT. The TRIR spectra show an increase in v(CO) (and k(CO)) on promotion to the excited state; however, the shifts Delta v(CO) show a decrease in the order Cl- > Br- > I-. The TR(3) spectra of the excited complexes [Ru(X)(R)(Co)(2)(iPr-DAB)] show v(s)(CN) of the iPr-DAB ligand 50-80 cm(-1) lower in frequency than for the complexes in their ground state. This frequency shift decreases in the order Cl- > Br- > I-, indicating a decrease of CT character of the lowest excited state in this order. However, going from X = Br to I, the effect on Delta v(CO) is much larger than the decrease of Delta v(s)(CN). This different effect on the CO- and CN-stretching frequencies is assigned to a gradual change in character of the lowest excited state from MLCT to XLCT when Cl- is replaced by Br- and I-. This result confirms a similar conclusion derived from previous resonance Raman and emission experiments on these complexes.

Background: Tissue MicroArrays (TMAs) represent a potential high-throughput platform for the analysis and discovery of tissue biomarkers. As TMA slides are produced manually and subject to processing and sectioning artefacts, the layout of TMA cores on the final slide and subsequent digital scan (TMA digital slide) is often disturbed making it difficult to associate cores with their original position in the planned TMA map. Additionally, the individual cores can be greatly altered and contain numerous irregularities such as missing cores, grid rotation and stretching. These factors demand the development of a robust method for de-arraying TMAs which identifies each TMA core, and assigns them to their appropriate coordinates on the constructed TMA slide.
Methodology: This study presents a robust TMA de-arraying method consisting of three functional phases: TMA core segmentation, gridding and mapping. The segmentation of TMA cores uses a set of morphological operations to identify each TMA core. Gridding then utilises a Delaunay Triangulation based method to find the row and column indices of each TMA core. Finally, mapping correlates each TMA core from a high resolution TMA whole slide image with its name within a TMAMap.
Conclusion: This study describes a genuine robust TMA de-arraying algorithm for the rapid identification of TMA cores from digital slides. The result of this de-arraying algorithm allows the easy partition of each TMA core for further processing. Based on a test group of 19 TMA slides (3129 cores), 99.84% of cores were segmented successfully, 99.81% of cores were gridded correctly and 99.96% of cores were mapped with their correct names via TMAMaps. The gridding of TMA cores were also extensively tested using a set of 113 pseudo slide (13,536 cores) with a variety of irregular grid layouts including missing cores, rotation and stretching. 100% of the cores were gridded correctly.
