Data from a series of controlled suction triaxial tests on samples of compacted speswhite kaolin were used in the development of an elasto–plastic critical state framework for unsaturated soil. The framework is defined in terms of four state variables: mean net stress, deviator stress, suction and specific volume. Included within the proposed framework are an isotropic normal compression hyperline, a critical state hyperline and a state boundary hypersurface. For states that lie inside the state boundary hypersurface the soil behaviour is assumed to be elastic, with movement over the state boundary hypersurface corresponding to expansion of a yield surface in stress space. The pattern of swelling and collapse observed during wetting, the elastic–plastic compression behaviour during isotropic loading and the increase of shear strength with suction were all related to the shape of the yield surface and the hardening law defined by the form of the state boundary. By assuming that constant–suction cross–sections of the yield surface were elliptical it was possible to predict test paths for different types of triaxial shear test that showed good agreement with observed behaviour. The development of shear strain was also predicted with reasonable success, by assuming an associated flow rule.

A research project in Web-enabled collaborative design and manufacture has been conducted. The major tasks of the project include the development of a Web-enabled environment for collaboration, online collaborative CAD/CAM, remote execution of large size programs (RELSP), and distributed product design. The tasks and Web/Internet techniques involved are presented first, followed by detail description of two approaches developed for implementation of the research: (1) a client-server approach for RELSP, where the following Internet techniques are utilized: CORBA, Microsoft’s Internet information server, Tomcat server, JDBC and ODBC; (2) Web-Services supported collaborative CAD which enables geographically dispersed designers jointly conduct a design task in the way of speaking and seeing each other and instantaneously modifying the CAD drawing online.

We show that short pulse laser generated Ti K alpha radiation can be used effectively as a backlighter for radiographic imaging. This method of x-ray radiography features high temporal and spatial resolution, high signal to noise ratio, and monochromatic imaging. We present here the Ti K alpha backlit images of six-beam driven spherical implosions of thin-walled 500-mu m Cu-doped deuterated plastic (CD) shells and of similar implosions with an included hollow gold cone. These radiographic results were used to define conditions for the diagnosis of fast ignition relevant electron transport within imploded Cu-doped coned CD shells. Germanium NPN bipolar transistors have been manufactured using phosphorus and boron ion implantation processes. Implantation and subsequent activation processes have been investigated for both dopants. Full activation of phosphorus implants has been achieved with RTA schedules at 535?C without significant junction diffusion. However, boron implant activation was limited and diffusion from a polysilicon source was not practical for base contact formation. Transistors with good output characteristics were achieved with an Early voltage of 55V and common emitter current gain of 30. Both Silvaco process and device simulation tools have been successfully adapted to model the Ge BJT(bipolar junction transistor) performance.

Rotational molding is a process used to manufacture hollow plastic products, and has been heralded as a molding method with great potential. Reduction of cycle times is an important issue for the rotational molding industry, addressing a significant disadvantage of the process. Previous attempts to reduce cycle times have addressed surface enhanced molds, internal pressure, internal cooling, water spray cooling, and higher oven air flow rates within the existing process. This article explores the potential benefits of these cycle time reduction techniques, and combinations of them. Recommendations on a best practice combination are made, based on experimental observations and resulting product quality. Applying the proposed molding conditions (i.e., a combination of surface-enhanced molds, higher oven flow rates, internal mold pressure, and water spray cooling), cycle time reductions of up to 70% were achieved. Such savings are very significant, inviting the rotomolding community to incorporate these techniques efficiently in an industrial setting. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 49:1846-1854, 2009. Two porphyrins, platinum(II) octaethylporphyrin (Pt-OEP) and palladium(II) octaethylporphyrin (Pd-OEP), are incorporated into a wide variety of different encapsulating matricies and tested as oxygen sensors, The excited state lifetimes of the two porphyrins are quite different, 0.091 ms for Pt-OEP and 0.99 ms for Pd-OEP, and Pt-OEP-based oxygen sensors are found to be much less sensitive than Pd-OEP-based ones to quenching by oxygen, Two major response characteristics of an oxygen sensor are (i) its sensitivity toward oxygen and (ii) its response and recovery times when exposed to an alternating atmosphere of nitrogen and air. The response characteristics of a rang of Pt-OEP, and Pd-OEP-based oxygen sensors were determined using cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and PMMA/CAB polymer blends as the encapsulating media. Pt-OEP and Pd-OEP oxygen sensors have better response characteristics (i.e., more sensitive and lower response and recovery times) when CAB is used as the encapsulating medium rather than PMMA. For both Pt-OEP- and Pd-OEP-based oxygen sensors, in either polymer, increasing the level of tributyl phosphate plasticizer improves the response characteristics of the final oxygen-sensitive film. Pt-OEP in different unplasticized PMMA/CAB blended films produced a range of oxygen sensors in which the response characteristics improved with increasing level of CAB present.
