Climate change is perhaps the most pressing and urgent environmental issue facing the world today. However our ability to predict and quantify the consequences of this change is severely limited by the paucity of in situ oceanographic measurements. Marine animals equipped with sophisticated oceanographic data loggers to study their behavior offer one solution to this problem because marine animals range widely across the world's ocean basins and visit remote and often inaccessible locations. However, unlike the information being collected from conventional oceanographic sensing equipment, which has been validated, the data collected from instruments deployed on marine animals over long periods has not. This is the first long-term study to validate in situ oceanographic data collected by animal oceanographers. We compared the ocean temperatures collected by leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in the Atlantic Ocean with the ARGO network of ocean floats and could find no systematic errors that could be ascribed to sensor instability. Animal-borne sensors allowed water temperature to be monitored across a range of depths, over entire ocean basins, and, importantly, over long periods and so will play a key role in assessing global climate change through improved monitoring of global temperatures. This finding is especially pertinent given recent international calls for the development and implementation of a comprehensive Earth observation system ( see http://iwgeo.ssc.nasa.gov/documents.asp?s=review) that includes the use of novel techniques for monitoring and understanding ocean and climate interactions to address strategic environmental and societal needs.

In this paper we define the structural information content of graphs as their corresponding graph entropy. This definition is based on local vertex functionals obtained by calculating-spheres via the algorithm of Dijkstra. We prove that the graph entropy and, hence, the local vertex functionals can be computed with polynomial time complexity enabling the application of our measure for large graphs. In this paper we present numerical results for the graph entropy of chemical graphs and discuss resulting properties. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The flow patterns in a high shear granulator depend on the fill volume. For example, DEM simulations reported by Terashita et al. [1] show that fill volume affects the velocities and kinetic energies of the particles. It also influences the granule size distribution [2]. Here the effects on the properties of the granule are described. The total mass of the granulate material was varied without changing the other variables such as impeller speed, granulation time and liquid to solid ratio. The resulting mechanical properties, such as strength, yield stress and Young's modulus, of the granules were measured. For the materials studied in the current work, increasing the fill factor (batch size) increased the values of these material parameters. This could be explained by the relative increase in the number and intensity of collisions between the particles, when the size of a batch was increased, leading to smaller porosities. We present a detailed analysis of time-resolved optical spectra of the ZZ Ceti white dwarf, HS 0507+0434B. Using the wavelength dependence of observed mode amplitudes, we deduce the spherical degree, l, of the modes, most of which have l = 1. The presence of a large number of combination frequencies (linear sums or differences of the real modes) enabled us not only to test theoretical predictions but also to indirectly infer spherical and azimuthal degrees of real modes that had no observed splittings. In addition to the above, we measure line-of-sight velocities from our spectra. We find only marginal evidence for periodic modulation associated with the pulsation modes: at the frequency of the strongest mode in the lightcurve, we measure an amplitude of 2.6 +/- 1.0 kms(-1), which has a probability of 2% of being due to chance; for the other modes, we find lower values. Our velocity amplitudes and upper limits are smaller by a factor of two compared to the amplitudes found in ZZ Psc. We find that this is consistent with expectations based on the position of HS 0507+0434B in the instability strip. Combining all the available information from data such as ours is a first step towards constraining atmospheric properties in a convectionally unstable environment from an observational perspective.

Capillary hydrodynamics has three considerable distinctions from macrosystems: first, there is an increase in the ratio of the surface area of the phases to the volume that they occupy; second, a flow is characterized by small Reynolds numbers at which viscous forces predominate over inertial forces; and third, the microroughness and wettability of the wall of the channel exert a considerable influence on the flow pattern. In view of these differences, the correlations used for tubes with a larger diameter cannot be used to calculate the boundaries of the transitions between different flow regimes in microchannels. In the present review, an analysis of published data on a gas-liquid two-phase flow in capillaries of various shapes is given, which makes it possible to systematize the collected body of information. The specific features of the geometry of a mixer and an inlet section, the hydraulic diameter of a capillary, and the surface tension of a liquid exert the strongest influence on the position of the boundaries of two-phase flow regimes. Under conditions of the constant geometry of the mixer, the best agreement in the position of the boundaries of the transitions between different hydrodynamic regimes in capillaries is observed during the construction of maps of the regimes with the use of the Weber numbers for a gas and a liquid as coordinate axes.

Densities (F), viscosities (?), and isobaric heat molar capacities (Cp) of binary mixtures containing imidazolium octanoate, [Im][C7CO2], a protic ionic liquid (PIL), with four molecular solvents, water, acetonitrile, ethanol, and 1-octanol, are determined as a function of temperature from (298.15 to 323.15) K and within the whole composition range at atmospheric pressure. Excess molar volumes, VE, excess molar heat capacities, Cp E, and the deviation from additivity rules of viscosities, ??, of imidazolium octanoate solutions were then deduced from the experimental results, as well as apparent molar volumes, Vfi, and partial molar volumes, V j m,i. Results are discussed according to the nature of the interaction between the PIL and the molecules and the effect of temperature. The excess Gibbs energies of activation of viscous flow (?G*E) for these systems were then calculated at 298.15 K. The excess isobaric heat capacities, Cp E, of binary ([Im][C7CO2] + solvent) systems, depend also of the nature of the molecular solvent in mixture. The excess properties were then correlated, at each temperature, as a function of composition by a Redlich-Kister-type equation. Finally results have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures, and thermodynamic properties of investigated binary mixtures were then compared to literature values together to investigate the impact of the nature of the solvent on these reported properties.

Densities ([rho]) and viscosities ([eta]) of binary mixtures containing the Protic Ionic Liquid (PIL), pyrrolidinium octanoate with five molecular solvents: water, methanol, ethanol, n-butanol, and acetonitrile are determined at the atmospheric pressure as a function of the temperature and within the whole composition range. The refractive index of all mixtures (nD) is measured at 298.15†K. The excess molar volumes VE and deviation from additivity rules of viscosities [eta]E and refractive index [Delta][phi]n, of pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions were then deduced from the experimental results as well as apparent molar volumes V[phi]i, partial molar volumes and thermal expansion coefficients [alpha]p. The excess molar volumes VE are negative over the entire mole fraction range for mixture with water, acetonitrile, and methanol indicating strong hydrogen-bonding interaction for the entire mole fraction. In the case of longest carbon chain alcohols (such as ethanol and n-butanol)†+†pyrrolidinium octanoate solutions, the VE variation as a function of the composition describes an S shape. The deviation from additivity rules of viscosities is negative over the entire composition range for the acetonitrile, methanol, ethanol, and butanol, and becomes less negative with increasing temperature. Whereas, [eta]E of the {[Pyrr][C7CO2]†+†water} binary mixtures is positive in the whole mole fraction range and decreases with increasing temperature. the excess Gibbs free energies of activation of viscous flow ([Delta]G*E) for these systems were calculated. The deviation from additivity rules of refractive index [Delta][phi]n are positive over the whole composition range and approach a maximum of 0.25 in PIL mole fraction for all systems. The magnitude of deviation for [Delta][phi]n describes the following order: water†>†methanol†>†acetonitrile†>†ethanol. Results have been discussed in terms of molecular interactions and molecular structures in these binary mixtures.

Despite their widespread use, there is a paucity of information concerning the effect of storage on the rheological properties of pharmaceutical gels that contain organic and inorganic additives. Therefore, this study examined the effect of storage (1 month at either 4 or 37 degrees C) on the rheological and mechanical properties of gels composed of either hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (3-5% w/w, HPMC) or hydroxyethylcellulose (3-5% w/w, HEC) and containing or devoid of dispersed organic (tetracycline hydrochloride 2% w/w) or inorganic (iron oxide 0.1% w/w) agents. The mechanical properties were measured using texture profile analysis whereas the rheological properties were analyzed using continuous shear rheometry and modeled using the Power Law model. All formulations exhibited pseudoplastic flow with minimal thixotropy. Increasing polymer concentration (3-5% w/w) significantly increased the consistency, hardness, compressibility, and adhesiveness of the formulations due to increased polymer chain entanglement. Following storage (I month at 4 and 37 degrees C) the consistency and mechanical properties of additive free HPMC gets (but not HEC gels) increased, due to the time-dependent development of polymer chain entanglements. Incorporation of tetracycline hydrochloride significantly decreased and increased the rheological and mechanical properties of HPMC and HEC gels, respectively. Conversely, the incorporation of iron oxide did not affect these properties. Following storage, the rheological and mechanical properties of HPMC and HEC formulations were markedly compromised. This effect was greater following storage at 37 than at 4 degrees C and, additionally, greater in the presence of tetracycline hydrochloride than iron oxide. It is suggested that the loss of rheological/mechanical structure was due to chain depolymerization, facilitated by the redox properties of tetracycline hydrochloride and iron oxide. These observations have direct implications for the design and formulation of gels containing an active pharmaceutical ingredient. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study examined the mechanical/textural, viscoeiastic and mucoadhesive properties of a range of aqueous gels composed of either hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) or sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na CMC). The mechanical/textural properties of each formulation were determined using texture profile analysis. The viscoelastic properties of each formulation were examined over a defined frequency range (0.01-1.0 Hz) using oscillatory rheometry in conjunction with stainless steel parallel plate geometry. The mucoadhesive properties of the gels were evaluated by measuring the tensile force required to overcome the gel/mucin adhesive interaction. Both gel hardness and compressibility, properties that affect the ease of product removal from a container and spreadability, increased as a function of increasing polymer concentrations. This is attributed to the effects of HEC and Na CMC on gel viscosity. Gel adhesiveness, a property related to bioadhesion, also increased as a function of polymer concentration and is attributed to the reported adhesive nature of these polymers. Increasing frequency of oscillation increased the storage and loss moduli yet decreased bath the dynamic viscosity of each gel type and also the loss tangent of HEC (but not Na CMC) gels. Therefore, following exposure to the range of oscillatory stresses that may be expected in vivo, HEC gels will be more susceptible than Na CMC gels to alterations in these rheological properties. Consequently, it would be expected that the clinical performance of HEC gels will be modified to a greater extent than Na CMC gels. In general, HEC gels exhibited a greater elastic nature than Na CMC gels over the frequency range employed for oscillation The storage and loss moduli and dynamic viscosity of both gel types increased, yet the loss tangent of both gel types decreased as a function of increasing polymer concentration. Gel mucoadhesive strength was dependent on both the time of contact of the formulation with mucin and also on polymer concentration. In conclusion, this study has characterised a number of gels containing either HEC or Na CMC in terms of their mechanical/textural, viscoelastic and mucoadhesive properties. Due to its relevance to the clinical performance, it is suggested that the information derived from these methods may be usefully combined to provide a more rational basis for the selection of polymers and their formulation as topical drug delivery systems. Groundwater flow in hard-rock aquifers is strongly controlled by the characteristics and distribution of structural heterogeneity. A methodology for catchment-scale characterisation is presented, based on the integration of complementary, multi-scale hydrogeological, geophysical and geological approaches. This was applied to three contrasting catchments underlain by metamorphic rocks in the northern parts of Ireland (Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, UK). Cross-validated surface and borehole geophysical investigations confirm the discontinuous overburden, lithological compartmentalisation of the bedrock and important spatial variations of the weathered bedrock profiles at macro-scale. Fracture analysis suggests that the recent (Alpine) tectonic fabric exerts strong control on the internal aquifer structure at meso-scale, which is likely to impact on the anisotropy of aquifer properties. The combination of the interpretation of depth-specific hydraulic-test data with the structural information provided by geophysical tests allows characterisation of the hydrodynamic properties of the identified aquifer units. Regionally, the distribution of hydraulic conductivities can be described by inverse power laws specific to the aquifer litho-type. Observed groundwater flow directions reflect this multi-scale structure. The proposed integrated approach applies widely available investigative tools to identify key dominant structures controlling groundwater flow, characterising the aquifer type for each catchment and resolving the spatial distribution of relevant aquifer units and associated hydrodynamic parameters.

The influence of both compressive and tensile epitaxial strain along with the electrical boundary conditions on the ferroelastic and ferroelectric domain patterns of bismuth ferrite films was studied. BiFeO3 films were grown on SrTiO3(001), DyScO3(110), GdScO3(110), and SmScO3(110) substrates to investigate the effect of room temperature in-plane strain ranging from -1.4% to +0.75%. Piezoresponse force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction measurements, and ferroelectric polarization measurements were performed to study the properties of the films. We show that BiFeO3 films with and without SrRuO3 bottom electrode have different growth mechanisms and that in both cases reduction of the domain variants is possible. Without SrRuO3, stripe domains with reduced variants are formed on all rare earth scandate substrates because of their monoclinic symmetry. In addition, tensile strained films exhibit a rotation of the unit cell with increasing film thickness. On the other side, the presence of SrRuO3 promotes step flow growth of BiFeO3. In case of vicinal SrTiO3 and DyScO3 substrates with high quality SrRuO3 bottom electrode and a low miscut angle of approximate to 0.15 degrees we observed suppression of the formation of certain domain variants. The quite large in-plane misfit of SrRuO3 with GdScO3 and SmScO3 prevents the growth of high quality SrRuO3 films and subsequent domain variants reduction in BiFeO3 on these substrates, when SrRuO3 is used as a bottom electrode.

In this paper, we introduce a macroscopic model for road traffic accidents along highway sections. We discuss the motivation and the derivation of such a model, and we present its mathematical properties. The results are presented by means of examples where a section of a crowded one-way highway contains in the middle a cluster of drivers whose dynamics are prone to road traffic accidents. We discuss the coupling conditions and present some existence results of weak solutions to the associated Riemann Problems. Furthermore, we illustrate some features of the proposed model through some numerical simulations. © The authors 2012.

In the present study an experimental investigation of the time-averaged velocity and turbulence intensity distributions from a ship’s propeller, in “bollard pull” condition (zero speed of advance), is reported. Previous studies have focused mainly on the velocity profile of not a rotating ship propeller but a plain jet. The velocity profile of a propeller is investigated experimentally in this study.
The velocity measurements were performed in laboratory by using a Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA). The measurements demonstrated two-peaked ridges velocity profile with a low velocity core at the centre within the near wake. The two-peaked ridges combined to be one-peaked ridge at 3.68 diameters downstream indicating the end of the zone of flow establishment. The study
provides useful information from a rotating ship’s propeller rather than a simplified plain jet to researchers investigating flow velocity generated from a propeller and probably resulting local scouring.

The objective of this research was to optimise the rheological parameters, hardened properties, and setting times of cement grouts containing metakaolin (MTK), viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) and superplasticiser (SP). All mixes were made with water-to-binder ratio (W/B) of 0.40. The replacement of cement by MTK was varied from 6% to 20% (by mass), and dosages of SP and VMA were varied from 0.3% to 1.4%, and 0.01% and 0.06% (by mass of binder), respectively. Increased SP led to an increase in fluidity, reduction in flow time, plate cohesion, rheological parameters, and an increase in the setting times. Increased VMA demonstrated a reduction in fluidity, an increase in Marsh cone time, plate cohesion, yield stress, and plastic viscosity. Results indicate that the use of MTK increased yield stress, plastic viscosity, cohesion plate, and flow time due to the higher surface area associated with an increase in the water demand. MTK reduced mini-slump and setting times, and improved compressive strength.

When multiple sources provide information about the same unknown quantity, their fusion into a synthetic interpretable message is often a tedious problem, especially when sources are conicting. In this paper, we propose to use possibility theory and the notion of maximal coherent subsets, often used in logic-based representations, to build a fuzzy belief structure that will be instrumental both for extracting useful information about various features of the information conveyed by the sources and for compressing this information into a unique possibility distribution. Extensions and properties of the basic fusion rule are also studied.
