Using a small planetary ball mill, liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) of metal salts or oxides (ZnO, CdO, CdCO3, Cu(OAc)(2)center dot H2O, Co(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, Mn(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, Ni(OAc)(2)center dot 4H(2)O, FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O) with two equivalents of isonicotinic acid (HINA) and small amounts of water ( up to 5.6 molar equivalents) gave discrete aquo complexes trans-[M(INA)(2)(OH2)(4)] (M = Zn, Cd, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn) efficiently within 30 min. For M = Zn, Cd and Cu these complexes readily undergo reversible formal dehydration to the extended network structures [M(INA)(2)] (M = Zn, Cu) or [Cd(INA)(2)(OH2)]center dot DMF by further LAG with non-aqueous liquids such as methanol or DMF. Overall, the mechanochemical dehydrations are more effective than heating or immersion in bulk solvents. The work demonstrates a two-step mechanochemical synthesis of coordination networks via discrete aquo complexes which may be preferable to single step reactions or grinding-annealing procedures in some cases. For example, the two step method was the only way to prepare [Cd(INA)(2)(OH2)]center dot DMF mechanochemically and the porous network Cu(INA)(2) could not be obtained from the aquo complex by heating.

This article assesses the effect that leveraging civilian defense force militias has on the dynamics of violence in civil war. We argue that the delegation of security and combat roles to local civilians shifts the primary targets of insurgent violence toward civilians, in an attempt to deter future defections, and re-establish control over the local population. This argument is assessed through an analysis of the Sunni Awakening and ancillary Sons of Iraq paramilitary program. The results suggest that at least in the Al-Anbar province of Iraq, the utilization of the civilian population in counterinsurgent roles had significant implications for the targets of insurgent violence.

We revisit the problem of forces on atoms under current in nanoscale conductors. We derive and discuss the five principal kinds of force under steady-state conditions from a simple standpoint that—with the help of background literature—should be accessible to physics undergraduates. The discussion aims at combining methodology with an emphasis on the underlying physics through examples. We discuss and compare two forces present only under current—the non-conservative electron wind force and a Lorentz-like velocity-dependent force. It is shown that in metallic nanowires both display significant features at the wire surface, making it a candidate for the nucleation of current-driven structural transformations and failure. Finally we discuss the problem of force noise and the limitations of Ehrenfest dynamics

Land wars in India: Contestations, social forces and evolving neoliberal urban transformation
The recent incidents of ‘land wars’ in India have highlighted the contradictions and challenges of the neoliberal urban transformation through a range of issues across governance, equity and empowerment in the development agenda. Simply put, a strong top down approach and corporate-political nexus have determined the modality of land acquisition, compensation and ultimately the nature of its consumption leaving out majority urban poor from its benefits. The paper focuses on the concept of neoliberalism as a modality of urban governance and emergence of the grassroots activism as a countermagnate to neoliberalist hegemony by examining the inequity and marginalization that embody these ‘land wars’ in India and the forms of resistance from the grassroots - their capacity, relationship and modus operandi. Emerging lessons suggest the potential for advancing governance from the bottoms up leading to more equitable distribution of resources. It is however argued that there is a need for a stronger conception of the ‘grassroots’ in both epistemological and empirical context. In particular, the preconditions for the ‘grassroots organisations’ to foster and play a more effective role requires a more inclusive notion of ‘institutionality and plurality’ within the current political economic context. The empirical focus of the paper is ‘land wars’ observed in Kolkata, West Bengal, however references to other examples across the country have also been made.

BaCe1-xYxO3-δ (BCY) and BaCe0.8-yZryY0.2O3-δ (BCZY) compounds were synthesised via an aqueous sol-gel method and two different calcination processes were tested for BCZY synthesis. The highest hydration capacity was recorded for the compound that contained the highest Y-doping level (x=0.2). Further substitution of Ce4+ by Zr4+ enhanced the chemical stability especially for y≥0.2, although decreased proton conductivity. However, BaCe0.6-0.2Zr0.2Y0.2O2.9 (BCZ20Y20) which presented adequate water uptake and high chemical stability in presence of CO2, was found to be the best candidate compound to be used in applications such as electrocatalytic CO2 hydrogenation.

A major weakness among loading models for pedestrians walking on flexible structures proposed in recent years is the various uncorroborated assumptions made in their development. This applies to spatio-temporal characteristics of pedestrian loading and the nature of multi-object interactions. To alleviate this problem, a framework for the determination of localised pedestrian forces on full-scale structures is presented using a wireless attitude and heading reference systems (AHRS). An AHRS comprises a triad of tri-axial accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers managed by a dedicated data processing unit, allowing motion in three-dimensional space to be reconstructed. A pedestrian loading model based on a single point inertial measurement from an AHRS is derived and shown to perform well against benchmark data collected on an instrumented treadmill. Unlike other models, the current model does not take any predefined form nor does it require any extrapolations as to the timing and amplitude of pedestrian loading. In order to assess correctly the influence of the moving pedestrian on behaviour of a structure, an algorithm for tracking the point of application of pedestrian force is developed based on data from a single AHRS attached to a foot. A set of controlled walking tests with a single pedestrian is conducted on a real footbridge for validation purposes. A remarkably good match between the measured and simulated bridge response is found, indeed confirming applicability of the proposed framework.
