Use of higher proportions of fly ash as a cement replacement in concrete has obvious environmental and performance benefits but high volumes of fly ash are not commonly used due to perceived lower early age strengths. In this investigation, addition of cement kiln dust (CKD) and gypsum to activate the fly ash was studied and the proportions used in the paste mixes were designed to optimize the mixture ingredients to achieve the highest early age compressive strength. Change of mineral phase composition and micro structure of the composites was analyzed. It was found that CKD was much more effective in activating the fly ash than gypsum. Appreciable early age compressive strengths were achieved for fly ash contents up to 60% of the binder and these observations were supported by analysis of the mineral phases.

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is generally designed with a relatively higher content of finer, which includes cement, and dosage of superplasticizer than the conventional concrete. The design of the current SCC leads to high compressive strength, which is already used in special applications, where the high cost of materials can be tolerated. Using SCC, which eliminates the need for vibration, leads to increased speed of casting and thus reduces labour requirement, energy consumption, construction time, and cost of equipment. In order to obtain and gain maximum benefit from SCC it has to be used for wider applications. The cost of materials will be decreased by reducing the cement content and using a minimum amount of admixtures. This paper reviews statistical models obtained from a factorial design which was carried out to determine the influence of four key parameters on filling ability, passing ability, segregation and compressive strength. These parameters are important for the successful development of medium strength self-compacting concrete (MS-SCC). The parameters considered in the study were the contents of cement and pulverised fuel ash (PFA), water-to-powder ratio (W/P), and dosage of superplasticizer (SP). The responses of the derived statistical models are slump flow, fluidity loss, rheological parameters, Orimet time, V-funnel time, L-box, JRing combined to Orimet, JRing combined to cone, fresh segregation, and compressive strength at 7, 28 and 90 days. The models are valid for mixes made with 0.38 to 0.72 W/P ratio, 60 to 216 kg/m3 of cement content, 183 to 317 kg/m3 of PFA and 0 to 1% of SP, by mass of powder. The utility of such models to optimize concrete mixes to achieve good balance between filling ability, passing ability, segregation, compressive strength, and cost is discussed. Examples highlighting the usefulness of the models are presented using isoresponse surfaces to demonstrate single and coupled effects of mix parameters on slump flow, loss of fluidity, flow resistance, segregation, JRing combined to Orimet, and compressive strength at 7 and 28 days. Cost analysis is carried out to show trade-offs between cost of materials and specified consistency levels and compressive strength at 7 and 28 days that can be used to identify economic mixes. The paper establishes the usefulness of the mathematical models as a tool to facilitate the test protocol required to optimise medium strength SCC.

The adsorption behavior of C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Red 4, and C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 from aqueous solution onto activated carbon was investigated under various experimental conditions. The adsorption capacity of activated carbon for reactive dyes was found to be relatively high. At pH 7.0 and 298 K, the maximum adsorption capacity for C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 and C.I. Reactive Red 4 dyes was found to be 0.27, 0.24, and 0.11 mmol/g, respectively. The shape of the adsorption isotherms indicated an L2-type isotherm according to the Giles and Smith classification. The experimental adsorption data showed good correlation with the Langmuir and Ferundlich isotherm models. Further analysis indicated that the formation of a complete monolayer was not achieved, with the fraction of surface coverage found to be 0.45, 0.42, and 0.22 for C.I. Reactive Blue 2, C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 and C.I. Reactive Red 4 dyes, respectively. Experimental data indicated that the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for the dyes was higher in acidic rather than in basic solutions, and further indicated that the removal of dye increased with increase in the ionic strength of solution, this was attributed to aggregation of reactive dyes in solution. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of reactive dyes onto activated carbon was an endothermic process. The adsorption enthalpy (?H) for C.I. Reactive Blue 2 and C.I. Reactive Yellow 2 dyes were calculated at 42.2 and 36.2 kJ/mol, respectively. The negative values of free energy (?G) determined for these systems indicated that adsorption of reactive dyes was spontaneous at the temperatures under investigation (298-328 K). © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Applications such as soil, rock and oil-well grouting all require enormous amounts of cement and are good examples of areas where a high volume of fly ash could partially replace cement to produce low-cost, environmentally safe and durable concrete. There is an increasing need to identify the rheological properties of cement grout using a simple test to determine the fluidity, and other properties of underwater grouts such as washout resistance and compressive strength. This paper presents statistical models developed using a fractorial design which was carried out to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the performance of underwater grout. Such responses of fluidity included mini-slump and flow time measured by Marsh cone, washout resistance, unit weight and compressive strength. The models are valid for mixes with 0.40 to 0.60 water-to-cementitious materials ratio, 0.02 to 0.08% of anti-washout admixture, by mass of binder, and 0.6 to 1.8% of superplasticizer, by mass of cementitious materials. The grout was made with 50% of pulverized-fuel ash replacement, by mass ofcementitious materials. Also presented are the derived models that enable the identification of underlying primary factors and their interactions that influence the modelled responses of underwater cement grout. Such parameters can be useful to reduce the test protocol needed for proportioning of underwater cement grout. This paper highlighted the influence of W/CM and dosage of antiwashout admixture and superplasticizer on fluidity, washout resistance and compressive strength and attempted also to demonstrate the usefulness of the models to improve understanding of trade-offs between parameters.

Concrete used for underwater repair is often proportioned to spread readily into place and self-consolidate, and to develop high resistance to segregation and water dilution. An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of the dosage of antiwashout admixture, water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm), and binder composition on the relative residual strength of highly flowable underwater concrete. Two types of antiwashout admixtures were used: a powdered welan gum at 0.07 and 0.15% by mass of binder, and a liquid-based cellulosic admixture employed at a high dosage of 1 to 1.65 L/100 kg of cementitious materials. The w/cms were set at 0.41 and 0.47 to secure adequate performance of underwater concrete for construction and repair. Four binder compositions were used: a Canadian Type 10 cement; a cement with 10% silica fume replacement; a cement with 50% replacement of granulated blast-furnace slag; and a ternary binder containing 6% silica fume and 20% Class F fly ash. Test results indicate that for a given washout mass loss and slump flow consistency, greater relative residual strength can be secured when the dosage of antiwashout admixture is increased, the w/cm is reduced, and a binary binder with 10% silica fume substitution or the ternary binder are employed. Such mixtures can develop relative residual compressive strengths of 85 and 80%, compared to mixtures cast in air, when the value of washout loss is limited to 4 and 6% for mixtures with slump flow values of 450 and 550 mm, respectively.

The flow patterns in a high shear granulator depend on the fill volume. For example, DEM simulations reported by Terashita et al. [1] show that fill volume affects the velocities and kinetic energies of the particles. It also influences the granule size distribution [2]. Here the effects on the properties of the granule are described. The total mass of the granulate material was varied without changing the other variables such as impeller speed, granulation time and liquid to solid ratio. The resulting mechanical properties, such as strength, yield stress and Young's modulus, of the granules were measured. For the materials studied in the current work, increasing the fill factor (batch size) increased the values of these material parameters. This could be explained by the relative increase in the number and intensity of collisions between the particles, when the size of a batch was increased, leading to smaller porosities. The microstructure evolution of a 10Cr ferritic/martensitic heat-resistant steel during creep at 600°C was investigated in this work. Creep tests demonstrated that the 10Cr steel had higher creep strength than conventional ASME-P92 steel at 600°C. The microstructure after creep was studied by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe microanalysis. It was revealed that the martensitic laths were coarsened with time and eventually developed into subgrains after 8354 h. Laves phase was observed to grow and cluster along the prior austenite grain boundaries during creep and caused the fluctuation of solution and precipitation strengthening effects, which was responsible for the two slope changes on the creep rupture strength vs rupture time curve. It was also revealed that the microstructure evolution could be accelerated by stress, which resulted in the lower hardness in the deformed part of the creep specimen, compared with the aging part.

We report spatially and temporally resolved measurements of self-generated multi-megagauss magnetic fields produced during ultrahigh intensity laser plasma interactions. Spatially resolved measurements of the magnetic fields show an asymmetry in the distribution of field with respect to the angle of laser incidence. Temporally resolved measurements of the self-generated third harmonic suggest that the strength of the magnetic field is proportional to the square root of laser intensity (i.e., the laser B-field) during the rise of the laser pulse. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations using a particle-in-cell code which also shows clear asymmetry of the field profile and similar magnetic field growth rates and scalings.

The early-age strength development of concrete containing slag cement has been investigated to give guidance for its use in fast-track construction. Measurements of temperature rise under adiabatic conditions have shown that high levels of slag cement-for example, 70% of the total binder-are required to obtain a significant reduction in the peak temperature rise. Despite these temperature rises being lower than those for portland cement mixtures, however the early-age strength under adiabatic conditions of slag cement concrete can be as high as 250% of the strength of companion cubes cured at 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). The maturity and, hence, strength development were calculated from the adiabatic temperature histories based on several Maturity functions available in the literature. The predicted strength development with age was compared with the experimental results. Maturity functions that take into account the lower ultimate strengths obtained at elevated curing temperatures were found to be better at predicting the strength development.

Being able to predict the properties of granules from the knowledge of the process and formulation variables is what most industries are striving for. This research uses experimental design to investigate the effect of process variables and formulation variables on mechanical properties of pharmaceutical granules manufactured from a classical blend of lactose and starch using hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as the binder. The process parameters investigated were granulation time and impeller speed whilst the formulation variables were starch-to-lactose ratio and HPC concentration. The granule properties investigated include granule packing coefficient and granule strength. The effect of some components of the formulation on mechanical properties would also depend on the process variables used in granulation process. This implies that by subjecting the same formulation to different process conditions results in products with different properties. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work describes a novel method of producing multicomponent fertiliser granules using high shear granulation. The granulation process was optimised using the response surface methodology technique. The variables used in the optimisation process include granulation time, batch size, impeller speed and binder concentration. Granulation time, binder concentration and interaction between the batch size and granulation time were found to be the main factors affecting the granule median size. The product yield is mainly influenced by granulation time and binder concentration. The interaction between the impeller speed and batch size also have a significant influence on the product yield. Product yield (2-4 mm) of approximately 60% could be obtained with high sphericity and granule strength (> 0.5 MPa). A low product recycle ratio of about 2:3 can be obtained at the optimised process conditions, compared to typical recycle rations of 6:1 which are obtained in typical fertiliser plants. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Generally, the solid and liquid fractions (digestate) from Anaerobic Digestion (AD) energy production are considered as waste. This has a negative impact on the sustainability of AD processes because of the financial outlay required to treat digestate before being discharged into municipal water treatment plants or natural water bodies. The main aim of this research was to investigate feasibility of producing an organic fertiliser using anaerobic digestate and limestone powders as the raw materials employing a high shear granulation process. Two-level factorial experimental design was used to determine the influence of granulation process variables on, the strength, resistance to attrition and yield of the granules. It was concluded from the study that it is technically feasible to produce organic fertiliser granules of acceptable strength and product yield. Increasing the liquid-to-solid ratio during granulation leads to increased granule strength and better product yield. Although the strength of the granules produced was lower than typical strength of commercial synthetic fertiliser granules (about 5 to 7. MPa), this could be improved by mixing the digestate with a polymeric binder or coating the particles post granulation. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

A combined experimental-computational study on the CO absorption on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluophosphate, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[trifluoromethylsulfonyl]imide, and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[trifluoromethylsulfonyl]imide ionic liquids is reported. The reported results allowed to infer a detailed nanoscopic vision of the absorption phenomena as a function of pressure and temperature. Absorption isotherms were measured at 318 and 338K for pressures up to 20MPa for ultrapure samples using a state-of-the-art magnetic suspension densimeter, for which measurement procedures are developed. A remarkable swelling effect upon CO absorption was observed for pressures higher than 10MPa, which was corrected using a method based on experimental volumetric data. The experimental data reported in this work are in good agreement with available literature isotherms. Soave-Redlich-Kwong and Peng-Robinson equations of state coupled with bi-parametric van der Waals mixing rule were used for successful correlations of experimental high pressure absorption data. Molecular dynamics results allowed to infer structural, energetic and dynamic properties of the studied CO+ionic liquids mixed fluids, showing the relevant role of the strength of anion-cation interactions on fluid volumetric properties and CO absorption. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
