Strudel: A corpus-based semantic model based on properties and types

Computational models of meaning trained on naturally occurring text successfully model human performance on tasks involving simple similarity measures, but they characterize meaning in terms of undifferentiated bags of words or topical dimensions. This has led some to question their psychological plausibility (Murphy, 2002; Schunn, 1999). We present here a fully automatic method for extracting a structured and comprehensive set of concept descriptions directly from an English part-of-speech-tagged corpus. Concepts are characterized by weighted properties, enriched with concept-property types that approximate classical relations such as hypernymy and function. Our model outperforms comparable algorithms in cognitive tasks pertaining not only to concept-internal structures (discovering properties of concepts, grouping properties by property type) but also to inter-concept relations (clustering into superordinates), suggesting the empirical validity of the property-based approach. Categorizations of physical gesture in piano teaching: A preliminary enquiry

The significance of the “physicality” involved in learning to play a musical instrument and the essential role of teachers are areas in need of research. This article explores the role of gesture within teacher–student communicative interaction in one-to-one piano lessons. Three teachers were required to teach a pre-selected repertoire of two contrasting pieces to three students studying piano grade 1. The data was collected by video recordings of piano lessons and analysis based on the type and frequency of gestures employed by teachers in association to teaching behaviours specifying where gestures fit under (or evade) predefined classifications. Spontaneous co-musical gestures were observed in the process of piano tuition emerging with similar general communicative purposes as spontaneous co-verbal gestures and were essential for the process of musical communication between teachers and students. Observed frequencies of categorized gestures varied significantly between different teaching behaviours and between the three teachers. Parallels established between co-verbal and co-musical spontaneous gestures lead to an argument for extension of McNeill’s (2005) ideas of imagery–language–dialectic to imagery–music–dialectic with relevant implications for piano pedagogy and fields of study invested in musical communication.

Three different types of quasi-model networks: synthesis by group transfer polymerization and characterization

Group transfer polymerization (GTP) chemistry was employed for the preparation of polymethacrylate networks of controlled structure (quasi-model networks) of three different types: (a) regular quasi-model networks, in which all polymer chains were linked at their ends, leaving, in principle, no free chain ends, (b) crosslinked star polymer quasi-model networks, in which star polymers were interlinked via half of their chains, letting the other half free (dangling), and (c) shell-crosslinked polymer quasi-model networks, in which the outer part of the network contained polymer arms (dangling chains). Combination of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers led to amphiphilic networks whose aqueous swelling behavior was characterized gravimetrically.

The formal specification of abstract data types and their implementation in Fortran 90: Implementation issues concerning the use of pointers

In this paper we continue our investigation into the development of computational-science software based on the identification and formal specification of Abstract Data Types (ADTs) and their implementation in Fortran 90. In particular, we consider the consequences of using pointers when implementing a formally specified ADT in Fortran 90. Our aim is to highlight the resulting conflict between the goal of information hiding, which is central to the ADT methodology, and the space efficiency of the implementation. We show that the issue of storage recovery cannot be avoided by the ADT user, and present a range of implementations of a simple ADT to illustrate various approaches towards satisfactory storage management. Finally, we propose a set of guidelines for implementing ADTs using pointers in Fortran 90. These guidelines offer a way gracefully to provide disposal operations in Fortran 90. Such an approach is desirable since Fortran 90 does not provide automatic garbage collection which is offered by many object-oriented languages including Eiffel, Java, Smalltalk, and Simula.

A review of patents relating to therapeutic angiogenesis using endothelial progenitors and other vasculogenesis-related cell types

Stem and progenitor cells have generated considerable scientific and commercial interest in recent years due to their potential for novel cell therapy for a variety of medical conditions. A highly active research area in the field of regenerative medicine is vascular biology. Blood vessel repair and angiogenesis are key processes with endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) playing a central role. Clinical trials for ischemic conditions, such as myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial disease, have suggested cell therapies to be feasible, safe, and potentially beneficial. Development of efficient methodologies to deliver EPC-based cytotherapies offers new hope for millions of patients with ischemic conditions. Evidence indicates that EPCs, depending on the subtype, mediate angiogenesis through different mechanisms. Differentiation into endothelium and complete integration into damaged vasculature was the first EPC mechanism to be proposed. However, many studies have demonstrated that vasoregulatory paracrine factor secretion by transplanted cells is also important. Many EPC subsets enhance angiogenesis and promote tissue repair by cytokine release without incorporating into the damaged vasculature. Whatever the mechanism, vascular repair and therapeutic angiogenesis using EPCs represent a realistic treatment option and also provides many commercialization opportunities. This review discusses recent advances in the EPC field whilst recounting relevant patents.

Three Types of Temporal Perspective: Characterizing Developmental Changes in Temporal Thought

This paper provides an outline of the development of temporal thinking that is underpinned by the idea that temporal cognition shifts from being event dependent to event independent over the preschool period. I distinguish between three different ways in which it may be possible to have a perspective on time: (1) a perspective that is grounded in script-like representations of repeated events; (2) a more sophisticated perspective that brings in an fundamental categorical distinction between events that have already happened and events that are yet to come; and (3) a mature temporal perspective that involves orienting oneself in time using a linear temporal framework, with a grasp of the distinctions between past, present, and future. I propose that, with development, children possess each of these types of perspective in turn, and that only the last of these involves being able to represent time in an event-independent way.

Effect of Different Types of Processing and Storage on the Polyacetylene Profile of Carrots and Parsnips.

Polyacetylenes of the falcarinol type such as falcarinol and falcarindiol naturally occur in plants of the Apiaceae family, mainly carrots and parsnips. In extracts of newly harvested carrots and parsnips, their levels vary between 20 and 300 mg/kg fresh weight and depend on agronomic factors, in particular the cultivar type. With increasing evidence of their in vitro bioactivity, the retention of these heat-sensitive compounds is desirable during handling, processing, and storage of carrots and parsnips. Quantification of these compounds is usually performed using reverse-phase chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry or other detection methods after appropriate solvent extraction. During minimal processing most losses occur during peeling of the carrots due to the higher distribution of polyacetylenes in the vegetable skin. Heat processing results in reduction of polyacetylene levels, whereas in the case of non-thermal processing, it is mainly dependent on the method employed. The levels of polyacetylenes are rather stable during short-term storage. There are some general guidelines to ensure higher retention of polyacetylene.
