We investigate the mechanisms for fluorescence enhancement and energy transfer near a gold tip in apertureless scanning near-field optical microscopy. Using a simple quasi-static model, we show that the observed enhancement of fluorescence results from competition between enhancement and quenching, and is dependent on a range of experimental parameters. We find good qualitative agreement with the results of measurements of the effect of both sharp and blunt tips on quantum dot fluorescence, and provide a demonstration of tip-enhanced fluorescence imaging with 60 nm resolution.

We investigate a hitherto largely unexplored regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics in which a highly-reflective element positioned between the end-mirrors of a typical Fabry--P\'erot resonator strongly modifies the cavity response function, such that two longitudinal modes with different spatial parity are brought close to frequency degeneracy. We examine applications of this generic `optical coalescence' phenomenon for the generation of enhanced photon--phonon nonlinearities in optomechanics and atom--photon nonlinearities in cavity quantum electrodynamics with strongly-coupled emitters.

We investigate harmonic generation (HG) from ground-state Ar+ aligned with M=1 at a laser wavelength of 390 nm and intensity of 4×1014Wcm−2. Using time-dependent R-matrix theory, we find that an initial state with magnetic quantum number M=1 provides a fourfold increase in harmonic yield over M=0. HG arises primarily from channels associated with the 3Pe threshold of Ar2+, in contrast with M=0 for which channels associated with the excited, 1De threshold dominate HG. Multichannel and multielectron interferences lead to a more marked suppression of HG for M=1 than M=0.

We investigate the magneto-optical properties of a nanostructured metamaterial comprised of arrays of nickel nanorods embedded in an anodized aluminum oxide template. The rods are grown using a self-assembly bottom-up technique that provides a uniform, quasi-hexagonal array over a large area, quickly and at low cost. The tuneability of the magneto-optic response of the material is investigated by varying the nanorod dimensions: diameter, length and inter-rod spacing as well as the overall thickness of the template. It is demonstrated that the system acts as a sub-wavelength light trap with enhanced magneto-optical properties occurring at reflectivity minima corresponding to photonic resonances of the metamaterial. Changes in dimensions of the nickel rods on the order of tens of nanometers cause a spectral blue-shift in the peak magneto-optical response of 270 nm in the visible range. A plasmonic enhancement is also observed at lower wavelengths, which becomes increasingly damped with larger diameters and increased volume fraction of nickel inclusions. This type of structure has potential applications in high density magneto-optical data storage (up to 1011–12 rods per square inch), ultrafast magneto-plasmonic switching and optical components for telecommunications.

Tailoring optical properties of artificial metamaterials, whose optical properties go beyond the limitations of conventional and naturally occurring materials, is of importance in fundamental research and has led to many important applications such as security imaging, invisible cloak, negative refraction, ultrasensitive sensing, transformable and switchable optics. Herein, by precisely controlling the size, symmetry and topology of alphabetical metamaterials with U, S, Y, H, U-bar and V shapes, we have obtained highly tunable optical response covering visible-to-infrared (Vis-NIR) optical frequency. In addition, we show a detailed study on the physical origin of resonance modes, plasmonic coupling, the dispersion of electronic and magnetic surface plasmon polaritons, and the possibility of negative refraction. We have found that all the electronic and magnetic modes follow the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons thus essentially they are electronic- and magnetic-surface-plasmon-polaritons-like (ESPP-like and MSPP-like) modes resulted from diffraction coupling between localized surface plasmon and freely-propagating light. Based on the fill factor and formula of magnetism permeability, we predict that the alphabetical metamaterials should show the negative refraction capability in visible optical frequency. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the specific ultrasensitive surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing of monolayer molecules and femtomolar food contaminants by tuning their resonance to match the laser wavelength, or by tuning the laser wavelength to match the plasmon resonance of metamaterials. Our tunable alphabetical metamaterials provide a generic platform to study the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials and explore the novel applications in optical frequency.

Surface plasmon enhancement of laser ablation of thin Al films is examined with a view to its application in metal film patterning and nano-structuring. Al films, deposited on silica prisms, are first characterized by attenuated total reflection using a broadband UV source and appropriate interference filter. The films are subsequently subjected to excimer laser radiation of wavelength 248 nm under conditions both of direct incidence from the air side of the film, and of surface plasmon excitation in which light is incident through the prism at greater than critical angle. For a given level of ablation damage in a particular film the fluence required using the surface plasmon technique is 3-5 times less than that needed when direct incidence is used. This is roughly in line with the energy absorbed in the film. From a practical standpoint it is clear that ablation of metal films can be achieved with much lower fluences than has hitherto been possible, thus reducing the requirements on laser output and relaxing the power handling constraints on any input optical elements.

We investigate the optomechanical properties of a periodic array of identical scatterers placed inside an optical cavity and extend our previous results. We show that operating at the points where the array is transmissive results in linear optomechanical coupling strengths between the cavity field and collective motional modes of the array that may be several orders of magnitude larger than is possible with an equivalent reflective ensemble. We describe and interpret these effects in detail and investigate the nature of the scaling laws of the coupling strengths for the different transmissive points in various regimes. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Using the Otto geometry of attenuated total reflection (prism-air gap-sample), front illuminated PtSi/Si Schottky barrier detectors are shown to exhibit enhanced photocurrent at surface plasmon resonance in the near infrared region. Correlation of the measured photocurrent with the calculated transmittance of light into the Si substate is demonstrated. The transmittance, which is due to surface plasmon re-radiation, is the optical parameter of principal importance in photosignal generation since the photon energies used here are greater than the silicon intrinsic bandgap. The results presented here indicate clearly the important features in optimizing surface plasmon enhancement in photodetection both above and below the silicon absorption edge.

The intensity of surface enhanced Raman scattering from benzoic acid derivatives on mildly roughened, thermally evaporated Ag films shows a remarkably strong dependence on metal grain size. Large grained (slowly deposited) films give a superior response, by up to a factor of 10, to small grained (quickly deposited) films, with films of intermediate grain size yielding intermediate results. The optical field amplification underlying the enhancement mechanism is due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Since surface roughness characteristics, as determined by STM, remain relatively constant as a function of deposition rate, it is argued that the contrast in Raman scattering is due to differences in elastic grain boundary scattering of SPPs (leading to different degrees of internal SPP damping), rather than differences in the interaction of SPPs with surface inhomogeneities.

The influence of polarization on the plasmon modes excited in tip-enhanced near-field optical microscopy have been investigated using the Finite Difference Time Domain Method. Analysis of the calculated results have laid particular emphasis on the ability to align local field enhancements with the orientation of molecules in order to optimize Raman signals, with particular relevance to recent experimental work on carbon nanotubes.

We present a comprehensive model for predicting the full performance of a second harmonic generation-optical parametric amplification system that aims at enhancing the temporal contrast of laser pulses. The model simultaneously takes into account all the main parameters at play in the system such as the group velocity mismatch, the beam divergence, the spectral content, the pump depletion, and the length of the nonlinear crystals. We monitor the influence of the initial parameters of the input pulse and the interdependence of the two related non-linear processes on the performance of the system and show its optimum configuration. The influence of the initial beam divergence on the spectral and the temporal characteristics of the generated pulse is discussed. In addition, we show that using a crystal slightly longer than the optimum length and introducing small delay between the seed and the pump ensures maximum efficiency and compensates for the spectral shift in the optical parametric amplification stage in case of chirped input pulse. As an example, calculations for bandwidth transform limited and chirped pulses of sub-picosecond duration in beta barium borate crystal are presented.
