Polymer extrusion is a complex process and the availability of good dynamic models is key for improved system operation. Previous modelling attempts have failed adequately to capture the non-linearities of the process or prove too complex for control applications. This work presents a novel approach to the problem by the modelling of extrusion viscosity and pressure, adopting a grey box modelling technique that combines mechanistic knowledge with empirical data using a genetic algorithm approach. The models are shown to outperform those of a much higher order generated by a conventional black box technique while providing insight into the underlying processes at work within the extruder.

A force field model of phosphorus has been developed based on density functional (DF) computations and experimental results, covering low energy forms of local tetrahedral symmetry and more compact (simple cubic) structures that arise with increasing pressure. Rules tailored to DF data for the addition, deletion, and exchange of covalent bonds allow the system to adapt the bonding configuration to the thermodynamic state. Monte Carlo simulations in the N-P-T ensemble show that the molecular (P-4) liquid phase, stable at low pressure P and relatively low temperature T, transforms to a polymeric (gel) state on increasing either P or T. These phase changes are observed in recent experiments at similar thermodynamic conditions, as shown by the close agreement of computed and measured structure factors in the molecular and polymer phases. The polymeric phase obtained by increasing pressure has a dominant simple cubic character, while the polymer obtained by raising T at moderate pressure is tetrahedral. Comparison with DF results suggests that the latter is a semiconductor, while the cubic form is metallic. The simulations show that the T-induced polymerization is due to the entropy of the configuration of covalent bonds, as in the polymerization transition in sulfur. The transition observed with increasing P is the continuation at high T of the black P to arsenic (A17) structure observed in the solid state, and also corresponds to a semiconductor to metal transition. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are excited with light of wavelength lambda (1) = 632.8 nm on or near a gentle Ag/Ag step structure using focused beam, prism coupling and detected using a bare, sharpened fibre tip. The tip-sample separation is controlled by means of an evanescent optical field at wavelength lambda (2) = 543.5 nm in a photon scanning tunnelling microscope (PSTM). The SPP propagation properties are first characterised on both the thin and thick sections of the Ag film structure either side of the step, both macroscopically, using attenuated total reflection, and microscopically from the PSTM images; the two techniques yield very good agreement. It is found that the SPP propagation length is similar to 10-11 mum across the step in each direction (thick to thin and vice versa) as observed in the PSTM images. Thus, with reference to the propagation lengths of 14.2 and 11.7 mum for the thick and thin planar parts of the Ag film respectively, it is concluded that the SPPs negotiate the step reasonably successfully. Importantly, also, it is shown that images may be produced, displaying SPPs with either an artificially enhanced (similar to 15-20 mum) or truncated (5-8 mum) propagation length across the step. Consideration of such images leads us to suggest the possibility that the photon tunnelling occurs in a local water environment. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

ate studies(2) and fusion energy research(3,4). Laser-driven implosions of spherical polymer shells have, for example, achieved an increase in density of 1,000 times relative to the solid state(5). These densities are large enough to enable controlled fusion, but to achieve energy gain a small volume of compressed fuel (known as the 'spark') must be heated to temperatures of about 10(8) K (corresponding to thermal energies in excess of 10 keV). In the conventional approach to controlled fusion, the spark is both produced and heated by accurately timed shock waves(4), but this process requires both precise implosion symmetry and a very large drive energy. In principle, these requirements can be significantly relaxed by performing the compression and fast heating separately(6-10); however, this 'fast ignitor' approach(7) also suffers drawbacks, such as propagation losses and deflection of the ultra-intense laser pulse by the plasma surrounding the compressed fuel. Here we employ a new compression geometry that eliminates these problems; we combine production of compressed matter in a laser-driven implosion with picosecond-fast heating by a laser pulse timed to coincide with the peak compression. Our approach therefore permits efficient compression and heating to be carried out simultaneously, providing a route to efficient fusion energy production.

Experimental data of the adsorption of reactive dyestuffs onto Filtrasorb 400 activated carbon (FS400) were determined in an equilibrium isotherm study. As most industrial wastewater contains more than one pollutant, an investigation into the effect of multisolute systems (using the unhydrolysed form of the reactive dyes) on the adsorption capacity was undertaken. Equilibrium isotherm models were employed to describe the adsorption capacities of single, binary and ternary dye solutions. The results of these analyses showed that adsorption of reactive dyes from single and multisolute systems can be successfully described by Langmuir, and Redlich–Peterson equilibrium isotherm models. Experimental data indicated that competitive adsorption for active sites on the carbon surface results in a reduction in the overall uptake capacity of the reactive dyes investigated.

A model is presented for obtaining the step formation energy for metallic islands on (1 1 1) surfaces from Monte Carlo simulations. This model is applied to homo (Cu/Cu(1 1 1), Ag/Ag(1 1 1)) and heteroepitaxy (Ag/Pt(1 1 1)) systems. The embedded atom method is used to represent the interaction between the particles of the system, but any other type of potential could be used as well. The formulation can also be employed to consider the case of other single crystal surfaces, since the higher barriers for atom motion on other surfaces are not a hindrance for the simulation scheme proposed.

Due to the complexity and inherent instability in polymer extrusion there is a need for process models which can be run on-line to optimise settings and control disturbances. First-principle models demand computationally intensive solution, while ‘black box’ models lack generalisation ability and physical process insight. This work examines a novel ‘grey box’ modelling technique which incorporates both prior physical knowledge and empirical data in generating intuitive models of the process. The models can be related to the underlying physical mechanisms in the extruder and have been shown to capture unpredictable effects of the operating conditions on process instability. Furthermore, model parameters can be related to material properties available from laboratory analysis and as such, lend themselves to re-tuning for different materials without extensive remodelling work.
