This investigation describes the formulation and characterization of theologically structured vehicles (RSVs) designed for improved drug delivery to the vagina. Interactive, multicomponent, polymeric platforms were manufactured containing hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC, 5% w/w) polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, 4% w/w), Pluronic (PL, 0 or 10% w/w), and either polycarbophil (PC, 3% w/w) or poly(methylvinylether-co-maleic anhydride) (Gantrez S97, 3% w/w) as a mucoadhesive agent. The rheological (torsional and dynamic), mechanical (compressional), and mucoadhesive properties were characterized and shown to be dependent upon the mucoadhesive agent used and the inclusion/exclusion of PL. The dynamic theological properties of the gel platforms were also assessed following dilution with simulated vaginal fluid (to mimic in vivo dilution). RSVs containing PC were more rheologically structured than comparator formulations containing GAN. This trend was also reflected in formulation hardness, compressibility, consistency, and syringeability. Moreover, formulations containing PL (10% w/w) were more theologically structured than formulations devoid of PL. Dilution with simulated vaginal fluids significantly decreased rheological structure, although RSVs still retained a highly elastic stnicture (G' > G '' and tan delta <1). Furthermore, RSVs exhibited sustained drug release properties that were shown to be dependent upon their rheological structure. It is considered that these semisolid drug delivery systems may be useful as site-retentive platforms for the sustained delivery of therapeutic agents to the vagina.

This study examined the rheological/mucoadhesive properties of poly (acrylic acid) PAA organogels as platforms for drug delivery to the oral cavity. Organogels were prepared using PAA (3%, 5%, 10% w/w) dissolved in ethylene glycol (EG), propylene glycol (PG), 1,3-propylene glycol (1,3-PG), 1,5-propanediol (1,5-PD), polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), or glycerol. All organogels exhibited pseudoplastic flow. The increase in storage (G') and loss (G '') moduli of organogels as a function of frequency was minimal, G '' was greater than G '' (at all frequencies), and the loss tangent <1, indicative of gel behavior. Organogels prepared using EG, PG, and 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) exhibited similar flow/viscoelastic properties. Enhanced rheological structuring was associated with organogels prepared using glycerol (in particular) and PEG 400 due to their interaction with adjacent carboxylic acid groups on each chain and on adjacent chains. All organogels (with the exception of 1,5-PD) exhibited greater network structure than aqueous PAA gels. Organogel mucoadhesion increased with polymer concentration. Greatest mucoadhesion was associated with glycerol-based formulations, whereas aqueous PAA gels exhibited the lowest mucoadhesion. The enhanced network structure and the excellent mucoadhesive properties of these organogels, both of which may be engineered through choice of polymer concentration/solvent type, may be clinically useful for the delivery of drugs to the oral cavity.

There is an increasing need to identify the effect of mix composition on the rheological properties of composite cement pastes using simple tests to determine the fluidity, the cohesion and other mechanical properties of grouting applications such as compressive strength. This paper reviews statistical models developed using a fractional factorial design which was carried out to model the influence of key parameters on properties affecting the performance of composite cement paste. Such responses of fluidity included mini-slump, flow time using Marsh cone and cohesion measured by Lombardi plate meter and unit weight, and compressive strength at 3 d, 7 d and 28 d. The models are valid for mixes with 0.35 to 0.42 water-to-binder ratio (W/B), 10% to 40% of pulverised fuel ash (PFA) as replacement of cement by mass, 0.02 to 0.06% of viscosity enhancer admixture (VEA), by mass of binder, and 0.3 to 1.2% of superplasticizer (SP), by mass of binder. The derived models that enable the identification of underlying primary factors and their interactions that influence the modelled responses of composite cement paste are presented. Such parameters can be useful to reduce the test protocol needed for proportioning of composite cement paste. This paper attempts also to demonstrate the usefulness of the models to better understand trade-offs between parameters and compare the responses obtained from the various test methods which are highlighted. The multi parametric optimization is used in order to establish isoresponses for a desirability function of cement composite paste. Results indicate that the replacement of cement by PFA is compromising the early compressive strength and up 26%, the desirability function decreased.

The interactions of ions in the solid state for a series of representative 1,3-dialkylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts (either ionic liquids or closely related) have been examined by crystallographic analysis, combined with the theoretical estimation of crystal-packing densities and lattice-interaction energies. Efficient close-packing of the ions in the crystalline states is observed, but there was no compelling evidence for specific directional hydrogen-bonding to the hexafluorophosphate anions or the formation of interstitial voids. The close-packing efficiency is supported by the theoretical calculation of ion volumes, crystal lattice energies, and packing densities, which correlated well with experimental data. The crystal density of the salts can be predicted accurately from the summation of free ion volumes and lattice energies calculated. Of even more importance for future work, on these and related salts, the solid-state density of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate salts can be predicted with reasonable accuracy purely on the basis of on ab initio free ion volumes, and this allows prediction of lattice energies without necessarily requiring the crystal structures.

The ability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to reinforce and enhance the electrical conductivity of polymer matrices is a function of both the aspect ratio and surface chemistry of the CNTs. Hitherto, due to the variability in MWCNT synthesis methods it has not been possible to study the effect of MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on polymer composite properties. This paper was the first to report the correlation between MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on the formation of electrical and rheological percolated networks. Furthermore, the fundamental ballistic conductance of MWCNTs made using arc discharge and chemical vapour deposition techniques was reported.

A ca. 1400-yr record from a raised bog in Isla Grande, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, registers climate fluctuations, including a Medieval Warm Period, although evidence for the 'Little Ice Age' is less clear. Changes in temperature and/or precipitation were inferred from plant macrofossils, pollen, fungal spores, testate amebae, and peat humification. The chronology was established using a C-14 wiggle-matching technique that provides improved age control for at least part of the record compared to other sites. These new data are presented and compared with other lines of evidence from the Southern and Northern Hemispheres. A period of low local water tables occurred in the bog between A.D. 960-1020, which may correspond to the Medieval Warm Period date range of A.D. 950-1045 generated from Northern Hemisphere tree-ring data. A period of cooler and/or wetter conditions was detected between ca. A.D. 1030 and I 100 and a later period of cooler/wetter conditions estimated at ca. cal A.D. 1800-1930, which may correspond to a cooling episode inferred from Law Dome, Antarctica. This study reports the formulation/characterisation of novel polymeric platforms designed to behave as low-viscosity systems in the nonaqueous state, however, following uptake of aqueous ?uids, exhibit rheological structuring and mucoadhesion. The rheological/mechanical and mucoadhesive properties of platforms containing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA, 1%, 3%, 5%, w/w) and poloxamines (Tetronic 904, 901, 704, 701, 304), both in the absence and presence of phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.4) are described. With the exception of Tetronic 904, all formulations exhibited Newtonian ?ow in the nonaqueous state, whereas, all aqueous formulations displayed pseudoplastic ?ow. The consistency and viscoelastic properties were dependent on the concentrations of PAA and PBS and Tetronic grade. PBS signi?cantly increased the consistency, viscoelasticity and mucoadhesion, reaching a maximum at a de?ned concentration of PBS that was dependent on PAA concentration and Tetronic grade. Formulations containing Tetronic 904 exhibited greatest consistency and elasticity both prior to and after dilution with PBS. Increasing PAA concentration enhanced the mucoadhesive properties. Prolonged drug release of metronidazole was observed from formulations containing 10% (w/w) PBS, 3% and, particularly, 5% (w/w) PAA. It is suggested that the physicochemical properties of formulations containing 3% or 5% (w/w) PAA and Tetronic 904, would render them suitable platforms for administration to body cavities.
