Single-phase magnetoelectric multiferroics are ferroelectric materials that display some form of magnetism. In addition, magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters are not independent of one another. Thus, the application of either an electric or magnetic field simultaneously alters both the electrical dipole configuration and the magnetic state of the material. The technological possibilities that could arise from magnetoelectric multiferroics are considerable and a range of functional devices has already been envisioned. Realising these devices, however, requires coupling effects to be significant and to occur at room temperature. Although such characteristics can be created in piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composites, to date they have only been weakly evident in single-phase multiferroics. Here in a newly discovered room temperature multiferroic, we demonstrate significant room temperature coupling by monitoring changes in ferroelectric domain patterns induced by magnetic fields. An order of magnitude estimate of the effective coupling coefficient suggests a value of ~1 × 10-7 sm-1.

Multiferroicity can be induced in strontium titanate by applying biaxial strain. Using optical second harmonic generation, we report a transition from 4/mmm to the ferroelectric mm2 phase, followed by a transition to a ferroelastic-ferroelectric mm2 phase in a strontium titanate thin film. Piezoelectric force microscopy is used to study ferroelectric domain switching. Second harmonic generation, combined with phase-field modeling, is used to reveal the mechanism of coupled ferroelectric-ferroelastic domain wall motion. These studies have relevance to multiferroics with coupled polar and axial phenomena.

Biaxial strain is known to induce ferroelectricity in thin films of nominally nonferroelectric materials such as SrTiO3. By a direct comparison of the strained and strain-free SrTiO3 films using dielectric, ferroelectric, Raman, nonlinear optical and nanoscale piezoelectric property measurements, we conclude that all SrTiO3 films and bulk crystals are relaxor ferroelectrics, and the role of strain is to stabilize longerrange correlation of preexisting nanopolar regions, likely originating from minute amounts of unintentional Sr deficiency in nominally stoichiometric samples. These findings highlight the sensitive role of stoichiometry when exploring strain and epitaxy-induced electronic phenomena in oxide films, heterostructures, and interfaces.

The role of long-range strain interactions on domain wall dynamics is explored through macroscopic and local measurements of nonlinear behavior in mechanically clamped and released polycrystalline lead zirconate-titanate (PZT) films. Released films show a dramatic change in the global dielectric nonlinearity and its frequency dependence as a function of mechanical clamping. Furthermore, we observe a transition from strong clustering of the nonlinear response for the clamped case to almost uniform nonlinearity for the released film. This behavior is ascribed to increased mobility of domain walls. These results suggest the dominant role of collective strain interactions mediated by the local and global mechanical boundary conditions on the domain wall dynamics. The work presented in this Letter demonstrates that measurements on clamped films may considerably underestimate the piezoelectric coefficients and coupling constants of released structures used in microelectromechanical systems, energy harvesting systems, and microrobots.

Piezoelectric materials, which convert mechanical to electrical energy and vice versa, are typically characterized by the intimate coexistence of two phases across a morphotropic phase boundary. Electrically switching one to the other yields large electromechanical coupling coefficients. Driven by global environmental concerns, there is currently a strong push to discover practical lead-free piezoelectrics for device engineering. Using a combination of epitaxial growth techniques in conjunction with theoretical approaches, we show the formation of a morphotropic phase boundary through epitaxial constraint in lead-free piezoelectric bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) films. Electric field-dependent studies show that a tetragonal-like phase can be reversibly converted into a rhombohedral-like phase, accompanied by measurable displacements of the surface, making this new lead-free system of interest for probe-based data storage and actuator applications.

The nonlinear response of a ferroic to an applied field has been studied through the phenomenological Rayleigh Law for over a hundred years. Yet, despite this, the fundamental physical mechanisms at the nanoscale that lead to macroscopic Rayleigh behavior have remained largely elusive, and experimental evidence at small length scales is limited. Here, it is shown using a combination of scanning probe techniques and phase field modeling, that nanoscale piezoelectric response in prototypical Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films appears to follow a distinctly non-Rayleigh regime. Through statistical analysis, it is found that an averaging of local responses can lead directly to Rayleigh-like behavior of the strain on a macroscale. Phase-field modeling confirms the twist of the ferroelastic interface is key in enhancing piezoelectric response. The studies shed light on the nanoscale origins of nonlinear behavior in disordered ferroics.

A direct-assembly method to construct three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nanostructures yields porous plasmonic rolls through the strain-induced self-rolling up of two-dimensional metallic nanopore films. This route is scalable to different hole sizes and film thicknesses, and applicable to a variety of materials, providing general routes towards a diverse family of 3D metamaterials with nano-engineerable optical properties. These plasmonic rolls can be dynamically driven by light irradiation, rolling or unrolling with increasing or decreasing light intensity. Such dynamically controllable 3D plasmonic nanostructures offer opportunities both for sensing and feedback in active nano-actuators. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Multiplexed immunochemical detection platforms offer the potential to decrease labour demands, increase sample throughput and decrease overall time to result. A prototype four channel multiplexed high throughput surface plasmon resonance biosensor was previously developed, for the detection of food related contaminants. A study focused on determining the instruments performance characteristics was undertaken. This was followed by the development of a multiplexed assay for four high molecular weight proteins. The protein levels were simultaneously evaluated in serum samples of 10-week-old veal calves (n = 24) using multiple sample preparation methods. Each of the biosensor's four channels were shown to be independent of one another and produced multiplexed within run repeatability (n = 6) ranging from 2.0 to 6.7%CV, for the four tested proteins, whilst between run reproducibility (n = 4) ranged from 1.5 to 8.9%CV. Four calibration curves were successfully constructed before serum sample preparation was optimised for each protein. Multiplexed concentration analysis was successfully performed on four channels revealing that each proteins concentration was consistent across the twenty-four tested animals. Signal reproducibility (n > 19) on a further long term study revealed coefficient of variation ranging from 1.1% to 7.3% and showed that the multiplexed assay was stable for at least 480 cycles. These findings indicate that the performance characteristics fall within the range of previously published data for singleplex optical biosensors and that the multiplexing biosensor is fit-for-purpose for simultaneous concentration analysis in many different types of applications such as the multiplexed detection of markers of growth-promoter abuse and multiplexed detection of residues of concern in food safety. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based biosensor is a popular platform for real-time monitoring and sensitive detection for a myriad of targets. However, only a few studies have reported the use of bacteriophages as specific binders for SPR-based detection. This study aimed to demonstrate how filamentous M13 bacteriophages expressing 12-mer peptides can be employed in an SPR-based assay, using a Salmonella-specific bacteriophage as a model binder to detect the foodborne bacterium Salmonella. Several important factors (immobilization buffers and methods, and interaction buffers) for a successful bacteriophage-based SPR assay were optimized. As a result, a Salmonella-specific bacteriophage-based SPR assay was achieved, with very low cross reactivity with other non-target foodborne pathogens and detection limits of 8.0 × 107 and 1.3 × 107 CFU/mL for one-time and five-time immobilized sensors, respectively. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the feasibility of using M13 bacteriophages expressing target-specific peptides as a binder in a rapid and label-free SPR assay for pathogen detection.

The management of non-functional features (performance, security, power management, etc.) is traditionally a difficult, error prone task for programmers of parallel applications. To take care of these non-functional features, autonomic managers running policies represented as rules using sensors and actuators to monitor and transform a running parallel application may be used. We discuss an approach aimed at providing formal tool support to the integration of independently developed autonomic managers taking care of different non-functional concerns within the same parallel application. Our approach builds on the Behavioural Skeleton experience (autonomic management of non-functional features in structured parallel applications) and on previous results on conflict detection and resolution in rule-based systems. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Protein G-coated magnetic particles (MPs) were used as immobilisation supports for an antibody against okadaic acid (MAb(OA)) and carriers into a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) device for the development of a direct competitive immunosensor for okadaic acid (OA). SPR analysis of MAb(OA)-MP conjugates demonstrated that conjugations were successful with complete immobilisation of all the antibody biomolecules onto the MPs. Moreover, MAb(OA)-MP conjugates provided up to 11-fold higher SPR signals, compared to free MAb(OA). The use of conjugates in the direct competition assay provided a 3-fold lower LOD mu g/L (2.6 mu g of OA/L, equivalent to 12 mu g of OA/kg mussel meat). The presence of mussel matrix did not interfere in the OA quantification as seen in the calibration curves. Mussel samples, obtained from Ebro Delta's bays (NW Mediterranean) during a diarrheic shellfish poisoning (DSP) event and in the presence of Dinophysis sacculus, an OA producer, in the shellfish production area, were analysed with the MP-based SPR immunosensor. The OA contents correlated with those obtained by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) (y = 0.984x -5.273, R-2 = 0.789, p <0.001) and by mouse bioassay (MBA).

The design, development and evaluation of an optical fibre pH sensor for monitoring pH in the alkaline region are discussed in detail in this paper. The design of this specific pH sensor is based on the pH induced change in fluorescence intensity of a coumarin imidazole dye which is covalently attached to a polymer network and then fixed to the distal end of an optical fibre. The sensor provides a response over a pH range of 10.0–13.2 with an acceptable response rate of around 50 min, having shown a very good stability over a period of longer than 20 months thus far. The sensor has also demonstrated little cross-sensitivity to ionic strength (IS) and also excellent photostability through a series of laboratory tests. These features make this type of sensor potentially well suited for in situ long term monitoring of pH in concrete structures, to enhance structural monitoring in the civil engineering sector

Epitaxial tetragonal 425 and 611 nm thick Pb(ZrTi)O (PZT) films are deposited by pulsed laser deposition on SrRuO-coated (100) SrTiO 24° tilt angle bicrystal substrates to create a single PZT grain boundary with a well-defined orientation. On either side of the bicrystal boundary, the films show square hysteresis loops and have dielectric permittivities of 456 and 576, with loss tangents of 0.010 and 0.015, respectively. Using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), a decrease in the nonlinear piezoelectric response is observed in the vicinity (720-820 nm) of the grain boundary. This region represents the width over which the extrinsic contributions to the piezoelectric response (e.g., those associated with the domain density/configuration and/or the domain wall mobility) are influenced by the presence of the grain boundary. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images collected near and far from the grain boundary indicate a strong preference for (101)/(1-01) type domain walls at the grain boundary, whereas (011)/(01-1) and (101)/(1-01) are observed away from this region. It is proposed that the elastic strain field at the grain boundary interacts with the ferro-electric/elastic domain structure, stabilizing (101)/(1-01) rather than (011)/(01-1) type domain walls, which inhibits domain wall motion under applied field and decreases non-linearity. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report a simple and facile methodology for constructing Pt (6.3 mm x 50 mu m) and Cu (6.3 mm x 30 mu m) annular microband electrodes for use in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and propose their use for amperometric gas sensing. The suitability of microband electrodes for use in electrochemical analysis was examined in experiments on two systems. The first system studied to validate the electrochemical responses of the annular microband electrode was decamethylferrocene (DmFc), as a stable internal reference probe commonly used in ionic liquids, in [Pmim][NTf2], where the diffusion coefficients of DmFc and DmFc(+) and the standard electron rate constant for the DmFc/DmFc(+) couple were determined through fitting chronoamperometric and cyclic voltammetric responses with relevant simulations. These values are independently compared with those collected from a commercially available Pt microdisc electrode with excellent agreement. The second system focuses on O-2 reduction in [Pmim][NTf2], which is used as a model for gas sensing. The diffusion coefficients of O-2 and O-2(-) and the electron transfer rate constant were again obtained using chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry, along with simulations. Results determined from the microbands are again consistent to those evaluated from the Pt microdisc electrode when compared these results from home-made microband and commercially available microdisc electrodes. These observations indicate that the fabricated annular microband electrodes are suitable for quantitative measurements. Further the successful use of the Cu electrodes in the O-2 system suggests a cheap disposable sensor for gas detection. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-performance piezoelectrics are lead-based solid solutions that exhibit a so-called morphotropic phase boundary, which separates two competing phases as a function of chemical composition; as a consequence, an intermediate low-symmetry phase with a strong piezoelectric effect arises. In search for environmentally sustainable lead-free alternatives that exhibit analogous characteristics, we use a network of competing domains to create similar conditions across thermal inter-ferroelectric transitions in simple, lead-free ferroelectrics such as BaTiO 3 and KNbO 3. Here we report the experimental observation of thermotropic phase boundaries in these classic ferroelectrics, through direct imaging of low-symmetry intermediate phases that exhibit large enhancements in the existing nonlinear optical and piezoelectric property coefficients. Furthermore, the symmetry lowering in these phases allows for new property coefficients that exceed all the existing coefficients in both parent phases. Discovering the thermotropic nature of thermal phase transitions in simple ferroelectrics thus presents unique opportunities for the design of 'green' high-performance materials.
