A rapid analytical optical biosensor-based immunoassay was developed and validated for the detection of okadaic acid (OA) and its structurally related toxins from shellfish matrix. The assay utilizes a monoclonal antibody which binds to the OA group of toxins in order of their toxicities, resulting in a pseudofunctional assay. Single-laboratory validation of the assay for quantitative detection of OA determined that it has an action limit of 120 mu g/kg, a limit of detection of 31 mu g/kg, and a working range of 31-174 mu g/kg. The midpoint on the standard matrix calibration curve is 80 mu g/kg, half the current regulatory limit. Inter- and intra-assay studies of negative mussel samples spiked with various OA concentrations produced average coefficient of variation (CV) and standard deviation (SD) values of 7.9 and 10.1, respectively. The assay was also validated to confirm the ability to accurately codetect and quantify dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX-1), DTX-2, and DTX-3 from shellfish matrix. Alkaline hydrolysis was not required for the detection of DTX-3 from matrix. Excellent correlations with the data generated by the biosensor method and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) were obtained using a certified reference material (R-2 = 0.99), laboratory reference material, and naturally contaminated mussel samples (R-2 = 0.97). This new procedure could be used as a rapid screening procedure replacing animal-based tests for DSP toxins.

The interfacial tension of the liquid-liquid phase boundary of several 1,3-dialkyl imidazolium based ionic liquids, namely, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(1)mim][NTf2], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliurn bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(2)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(4)mim][NTf2], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(6)mim][NTf2], 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(8)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate [C(4)mim][CF3SO3], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate [C(4)mim][CF3COO] with water and with the n-alkanes, n-hexane, n-octane and n-decane, has been measured using the pendant drop method as a function of temperature from 293 to 323 K. The experimental interfacial tension data were correlated using the ionic liquid parachor estimation method and a mutual solubility model. The influence of the cation and anion of ionic liquids and also of alkyl chain length of n-alkanes on interfacial tension is discussed. It has also been demonstrated that the interfacial tension data estimated by the correlation methods are in good agreement with the experimental data. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Around 80% of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients achieve a complete remission, however many will relapse and ultimately die of their disease. The association between karyotype and prognosis has been studied extensively and identified patient cohorts as having favourable [e.g. t(8; 21), inv (16)/t(16; 16), t(15; 17)], intermediate [e.g. cytogenetically normal (NK-AML)] or adverse risk [e.g. complex karyotypes]. Previous studies have shown that gene expression profiling signatures can classify the sub-types of AML, although few reports have shown a similar feature by using methylation markers. The global methylation patterns in 19 diagnostic AML samples were investigated using the Methylated CpG Island Amplification Microarray (MCAM) method and CpG island microarrays containing 12,000 CpG sites. The first analysis, comparing favourable and intermediate cytogenetic risk groups, revealed significantly differentially methylated CpG sites (594 CpG islands) between the two subgroups. Mutations in the NPM1 gene occur at a high frequency (40%) within the NK-AML subgroup and are associated with a more favourable prognosis in these patients. A second analysis comparing the NPM1 mutant and wild-type research study subjects again identified distinct methylation profiles between these two subgroups. Network and pathway analysis revealed possible molecular mechanisms associated with the different risk and/or mutation sub-groups. This may result in a better classification of the risk groups, improved monitoring targets, or the identification of novel molecular therapies.

This article reports on research carried out on 200 child welfare files from the largest welfare authority in Northern Ireland from 1950-1968. The literature review provides a commentary on some of the major debates surrounding child welfare and protection social work from the perspective of its historical development. The report of the research which follows offers an insight into one core, and less well-known period of child welfare history in Northern Ireland between the two Children and Young Persons Acts (1950 & 1968). Using a method of discourse analysis influenced by Michel Foucault, a detailed description of the nature of practice is offered. This paper is offered as a work in progress, with further work being planned for dissemination of more detailed analysis of the method and outcomes. The research seeks to ask a few core questions based on problems identified in the present with our current understandings of child welfare and protection histories. While recognising the limitations of this study and the need for broader analysis of the wider context surrounding child welfare practice at the moment, it is argued that some salient conclusions can be drawn about continuity and discontinuity in practice which are of interest to practitioners and students of child welfare social work.

Background: Postal and electronic questionnaires are widely used for data collection in epidemiological studies but non-response reduces the effective sample size and can introduce bias. Finding ways to increase response to postal and electronic questionnaires would improve the quality of health research. Objectives: To identify effective strategies to increase response to postal and electronic questionnaires. Search strategy: We searched 14 electronic databases to February 2008 and manually searched the reference lists of relevant trials and reviews, and all issues of two journals. We contacted the authors of all trials or reviews to ask about unpublished trials. Where necessary, we also contacted authors to confirm methods of allocation used and to clarify results presented. We assessed the eligibility of each trial using pre-defined criteria. Selection criteria: Randomised controlled trials of methods to increase response to postal or electronic questionnaires. Data collection and analysis: We extracted data on the trial participants, the intervention, the number randomised to intervention and comparison groups and allocation concealment. For each strategy, we estimated pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) in a random-effects model. We assessed evidence for selection bias using Egger's weighted regression method and Begg's rank correlation test and funnel plot. We assessed heterogeneity among trial odds ratios using a Chi 2 test and the degree of inconsistency between trial results was quantified using the I 2 statistic. Main results: Postal We found 481 eligible trials. The trials evaluated 110 different ways of increasing response to postal questionnaires. We found substantial heterogeneity among trial results in half of the strategies. The odds of response were at least doubled using monetary incentives (odds ratio 1.87; 95% CI 1.73 to 2.04; heterogeneity P < 0.00001, I 2 = 84%), recorded delivery (1.76; 95% CI 1.43 to 2.18; P = 0.0001, I 2 = 71%), a teaser on the envelope - e.g. a comment suggesting to participants that they may benefit if they open it (3.08; 95% CI 1.27 to 7.44) and a more interesting questionnaire topic (2.00; 95% CI 1.32 to 3.04; P = 0.06, I 2 = 80%). The odds of response were substantially higher with pre-notification (1.45; 95% CI 1.29 to 1.63; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 89%), follow-up contact (1.35; 95% CI 1.18 to 1.55; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 76%), unconditional incentives (1.61; 1.36 to 1.89; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 88%), shorter questionnaires (1.64; 95%CI 1.43 to 1.87; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 91%), providing a second copy of the questionnaire at follow up (1.46; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.90; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 82%), mentioning an obligation to respond (1.61; 95% CI 1.16 to 2.22; P = 0.98, I 2 = 0%) and university sponsorship (1.32; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.54; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 83%). The odds of response were also increased with non-monetary incentives (1.15; 95% CI 1.08 to 1.22; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 79%), personalised questionnaires (1.14; 95% CI 1.07 to 1.22; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 63%), use of hand-written addresses (1.25; 95% CI 1.08 to 1.45; P = 0.32, I 2 = 14%), use of stamped return envelopes as opposed to franked return envelopes (1.24; 95% CI 1.14 to 1.35; P < 0.00001, I 2 = 69%), an assurance of confidentiality (1.33; 95% CI 1.24 to 1.42) and first class outward mailing (1.11; 95% CI 1.02 to 1.21; P = 0.78, I 2 = 0%). The odds of response were reduced when the questionnaire included questions of a sensitive nature (0.94; 95% CI 0.88 to 1.00; P = 0.51, I 2 = 0%). Electronic: We found 32 eligible trials. The trials evaluated 27 different ways of increasing response to electronic questionnaires. We found substantial heterogeneity among trial results in half of the strategies. The odds of response were increased by more than a half using non-monetary incentives (1.72; 95% CI 1.09 to 2.72; heterogeneity P < 0.00001, I 2 = 95%), shorter e-questionnaires (1.73; 1.40 to 2.13; P = 0.08, I 2 = 68%), including a statement that others had responded (1.52; 95% CI 1.36 to 1.70), and a more interesting topic (1.85; 95% CI 1.52 to 2.26). The odds of response increased by a third using a lottery with immediate notification of results (1.37; 95% CI 1.13 to 1.65), an offer of survey results (1.36; 95% CI 1.15 to 1.61), and using a white background (1.31; 95% CI 1.10 to 1.56). The odds of response were also increased with personalised e-questionnaires (1.24; 95% CI 1.17 to 1.32; P = 0.07, I 2 = 41%), using a simple header (1.23; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.48), using textual representation of response categories (1.19; 95% CI 1.05 to 1.36), and giving a deadline (1.18; 95% CI 1.03 to 1.34). The odds of response tripled when a picture was included in an e-mail (3.05; 95% CI 1.84 to 5.06; P = 0.27, I 2 = 19%). The odds of response were reduced when "Survey" was mentioned in the e-mail subject line (0.81; 95% CI 0.67 to 0.97; P = 0.33, I 2 = 0%), and when the e-mail included a male signature (0.55; 95% CI 0.38 to 0.80; P = 0.96, I 2 = 0%). Authors' conclusions: Health researchers using postal and electronic questionnaires can increase response using the strategies shown to be effective in this systematic review. One of the reasons for the 'fin de seicle' angst within western liberal capitalist societies is the rise in prominance of ecological concerns within these societies. Long before the New Right declared the post-war welfare state to be untenable, early green critics had claimed it to be ecologically unsustainable. The addiction of the welfare state on ever increasing levels of economic growth was pronounced to be simply impossible within the context of a finite planet. Although it was not expressed in this manner, what these early ecological concerns with Limits to Growth were in effect saying was that the accumulation of capital rendered capitalism unsustainable. Yet the ecological critique of capitalism has not found much favour within the Marxist critique untile recently. Early Marxist analyses of the ecology movement dismissed them as ‘petty bourgeios radicals’ while many greens still view Marxism as ‘fair shares in extinction’. The lack of positive engagement and dialogue between Marxism and ecology has in recent years been put right with a discernable overlap between the two critiques of capitalism. This article seeks to present the areas of disagreement and agreement between the two and seeks to provide an ‘environmental audit’ on both the Marxist method and political project.

Dealuminated beta zeolites exchanged with Pd and Fe were prepared to investigate the influence of iron and dealumination on the activity and selectivity of Pd/BEA zeolite for toluene total oxidation. The specific areas determined by BET method and EPR studies allowed to know that the palladium would be more easily agglomerated on the BEA than on the DBEA. Moreover, a quantification of the palladium saturation on the BEA zeolite was deduced by EPR. Effects of dynamic and static oxidation and weak and strong reduction treatments were studied by EPR. Several isolated and interacted Pd+ species and hole centers were detected. The Pd was much reduced after the catalytic test in dealuminated and Fe doped samples. This result could be directly correlated to the catalytic deactivation. The deactivation could be also explain by the type of coke deposed on the catalyst and by the hydroscopic behavior of the samples. Addition of Fe or dealumination could prevent the deactivation and then lead to better catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

A rapid liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous identification, confirmation and quantitation of seven licensed anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDS) in bovine milk. The method was validated in accordance with the criteria defined in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. Two classes of AIDS were investigated, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The developed method is capable of detecting and confirming dexamethasone (DXM), betamethasone (BTM), prednisolone (FRED), tolfenamic acid (TV), 5-hydroxy flunixin (5-OH-FLU). meloxicam (MLX) and 4-methyl amino antipyrine (4-MAA) at their associated maximum residue limits (MRLs). These compounds represent all the corticosteroids and NSAIDs licensed for use in bovine animals producing milk for human consumption. These compounds have never been analysed before in the same method and also 4-methyl amino antipyrine has never been analysed with the other licensed NSAIDs. The method can be considered rapid as permits the analysis of up to 30 samples in one day. Milk samples are extracted with acetonitrile; sodium chloride is added to aid partition of the milk and acetonitrile mixture. The acetonitrile extract is then subjected to liquid-liquid purification by the addition of hexane. The purified extract is finally evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in a water/acetonitrile mixture and determination is carried out by LC-MS/MS. Decision limit (CC alpha) values and detection capability (CC beta) values have been established for each compound. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A number of different, characterised, supported and unsupported oxides of Ru(IV) and Ir(IV) have been tested for activity as a chlorine catalyst in the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions. All the different materials tested gave yields of chlorine of > 90% and first-order kinetics for the reduction of the Ce(IV) ions. The samples prepared by the Adams method were the most active of the materials tested and are typified by high surface areas and appreciable activities per unit area. The kinetics of the catalysed reduction of Ce(IV) ions by brine were studied in detail using an Ru(IV) oxide prepared by the Adams method and supported on TiO2 and the results were rationalised in terms of an electrochemical model in which the rate-determining step is the diffusion-controlled reduction of Ce(IV) ions. In support of this model the measured activation energies for the oxidation of brine by Ce(IV) ions, catalysed by either a supported or unsupported Adams catalyst, were both close (18-21 kJ mol-1) to that expected for a diffusion-controlled reaction (ca. 15 kJ mol-1).

Mixed flocks of pale-bellied Brent geese (Branta bernicla hrota) and wigeon (Anas penelope L.) feeding on intertidal Zostera spp were studied during October 1993 with respect to tidal position, feeding method and duration, and competitive: interactions within and between species. Owing to many disturbance incidents affecting the use of the site by wildfowl, only complete data on flow tides were presented. Brent geese fed over a greater period of the tidal cycle than wigeon. Differences in feeding methods indicated that Brent geese exploited the rhizomes, which are energetically more profitable than the shoot on which wigeon fed. Aggressive interactions were recorded within species but there were no records of aggression between species. More subtle competition for space, however, may have occurred during feeding. Brent geese could reach Zostera spp For a short period after increasing depth of water prevented access by wigeon. However, individual wigeon were observed foraging near feeding Brent geese, picking up the scraps oi material discarded by the latter, and small numbers of wigeon may benefit from the presence of the geese. These benefits for some individual wigeon are not considered to compensate for the disadvantages to the latter species population as a whole in feeding on poorer-quality food for a shorter period of the tidal cycle. This disadvantage is likely to have contributed to the decline in the wigeon population on Strangford Lough, Co. Down, while numbers of Brent geese have been maintained at a high level.

Purpose. The pH-dependent physicochemical properties of the antimicrobial quinolone, nalidixic acid, were exploited to achieve ‘intelligent’ drug release from a potential urinary catheter coating, poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (p(HEMA)), in direct response to the elevated pH which occurs at the onset of catheter infection.
Methods. p(HEMA) hydrogels, and reduced-hydrophilicity copolymers incorporating methyl methacrylate, were loaded with nalidixic acid by a novel, surface particulate localization method, and characterized in terms of pH-dependent drug release and microbiological activity against the common urease-producing urinary pathogen Proteus mirabilis.
Results. The pH-dependent release kinetics of surface-localized nalidixic acid were 50- and 10-fold faster at pH 9, representing the alkaline conditions induced by urease-producing urinary pathogens, compared to release at pH 5 and pH 7 respectively. Furthermore, microbiological activity against P. mirabilis was significantly enhanced after loading surface particulate nalidixic acid in comparison to p(HEMA) hydrogels conventionally loaded with dispersed drug. The more hydrophobic methyl methacrylate-containing copolymers also demonstrated this pH responsive behavior, but additionally exhibited a sustained period of zero-order release.
Conclusions. The paradigm presented here provides a system with latent, immediate infection-responsive drug release followed by prolonged zero-order antimicrobial delivery, and represents an ‘intelligent’, infection-responsive, self-sterilizing biomaterial.

The band structure of CdI has been calculated using a modified semi-empirical tight-binding method and the results obtained have been compared with both angularly averaged and angularly resolved photoemission spectra. The theoretically computed density of states distribution is in excellent agreement with angularly averaged results and all the main features observed experimentally are reproduced in the theory. Angularly resolved spectra have been used to draw up energy band dispersion curves directly and agreement with calculated bands in both the Gamma M and Gamma K directions of the Brillouin zone is good.

A generic, parameterisable key scheduling core is presented, which can be utilised in pipelinable private-key encryption algorithms. The data encryption standard (DES) algorithm, which lends itself readily to pipelining, is utilised to exemplify this novel key scheduling method and the broader applicability of the method to other encryption algorithms is illustrated. The DES design is implemented on Xilinx Virtex FPGA technology. Utilising the novel method, a 16-stage pipelined DES design is achieved, which can run at an encryption rate of 3.87 Gbit/s. This result is among the fastest hardware implementations and is a factor 28 times faster than software implementations.

This special-topic volume reports on new progress made in the analysis and understanding of fracture and damage mechanics. The Finite Element Method is a well-established analytical tool for theoretical fracture analysis. The development of interface elements which combine aspects of both fracture and damage mechanics has permitted the prediction of both crack initiation and propagation. A number of the papers presented here deal with their use and further development.Substantial progress has also been made in the use of the Boundary Element Method for treating crack problems. The inherent mathematical complexity of this method has resulted in somewhat slower progress than that enjoyed by the Finite Element Method and is still the focus of much research. The volume also presents a number of contributions arising from this field. A topic which is closely related to the study of fracture is structural repair. Although repairs are usually effected after fracture occurs, the structural analyst must still ensure that the repair itself is not prone to cracking or other forms of damage. Two approaches to the study of damage in a repaired structure are described in this special volume. These three aspects, taken together, ensure that even the expert will learn something new from this book.
