The voltammetry for the reduction of 2-nitrotoluene at a gold microdisk electrode is reported in two ionic liquids: trihexyltetradecylphosphonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([Emim][NTf2]). The reduction of nitrocyclopentane (NCP) and 1-nitrobutane (BuN) was investigated using voltammetry at a gold microdisk electrode in the ionic liquid [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP]. Simulated voltammograms, generated through the use of ButlerVolmer theory and symmetric MarcusHush theory, were compared to experimental data, with both theories parametrizing the data similarly well. An experimental value for the Marcusian parameter, 1 was also determined in all cases. For the reduction of 2-nitrotoluene, this was 0.5 +/- 0.1 eV in both solvents, while for NCP and BuN in [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP], it was 2 +/- 0.1 and 5 +/- 0.1 eV, respectively. This is attributed to the localization of charge on the nitro group and the primary nitro alkyls increased interaction with the environment, resulting in a larger reorganization energy.

Asymmetric MarcusHush (AMH) theory is applied for the first time in ionic solvents to model the voltammetric reduction of oxygen in 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide and of 2-nitrotoluene (2-NT), nitrocyclopentane (NCP), and 1-nitro-butane (BuN) in trihexyltetradecylphosphonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate on a gold microdisc electrode. An asymmetry parameter, gamma, was estimated for all systems as -0.4 for the reduction of oxygen and -0.05, 0.25, and 0 +/- 0.05 for the reductions of 2-NT, NCP, and BuN, respectively, which suggests equal force constants of reactants and products in the case of 2-NT and BuN and unequal force constants for oxygen and NCP where the force constants of the oxidized species are greater than the reduced species in the case of oxygen and less than the reduced species in the case of NCP. Previously measured values for a, the Butler-Volmer transfer coefficient, reflect this in each case. Where appreciable asymmetry occurs, AMH theory was seen to parametrize the experimental data better than either Butler-Volmer or symmetric Marcus-Hush theory, allowing additionally the extraction of reorganization energy. This is the first study to provide key physical insights into electrochemical systems in room-temperature ionic liquids using AMH theory, allowing elucidation of the reorganization energies and the relative force constants of the reactants and products in each reaction.

The title process comprises admixing cellulose with an ionic liq. capable of solvating or dissolving at least some of the cellulose, the ionic liq. being a compd. comprised solely of cations and anions (e.g., 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium sulfate) and which exists in a liq. state at a temp. at or below 150°, the cations in the ionic liq. having the general formula R1Z(R2)(R3)R4: in which Z represents a nitrogen or phosphorus atom, R1 represents a Me or Et group, each of R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, is selected from C4-8alkyl, optionally-substituted benzyl, optionally-substituted Ph, and C5-7cycloalkyl, and R4 represents C1-8 alkyl, optionally-substituted benzyl, optionally-substituted Ph or C5-7cyclohexyl; in which the optional substituents on a benzyl or Ph ring are one, two or three substituents selected from C1-4alkyl or alkoxy groups, halogen atoms and nitro groups; and treating the resulting solvate or soln. with an acid in the presence of water, the acid having a pKa in water of less than 2 at 25°. Porous manganese oxide (OMS-2) and platinum supported on OMS-2 catalysts have been shown to facilitate the hydrogenation of the nitro group on chloronitrobenzene to give chloroaniline with no dehalogenation. Complete conversion was obtained within 2 h at 25 [degree]C and, although the rate of reaction increased with increasing temperature up to 100 [degree]C, the selectivity to chloroaniline remained at 99.0%. Use of Pd/OMS-2 or Pt/Al2O3 resulted in significant dechlorination even at 25 [degree]C and 2 bar hydrogen pressure giving selectivity to chloroaniline of 34.5% and 77.8%, respectively, at complete conversion. This demonstrates the potential of using platinum group metal free catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of halogenated aromatics. Two pathways were observed for the analogous nitrobenzene hydrogenation depending on the catalyst used. The hydrogenation of nitrobenzene was found to follow a direct pathway to aniline and nitrosobenzene over Pd/OMS-2 in contrast to the OMS and Pt/OMS-2 catalysts which resulted in formation of nitrosobenzene, azoxybenzene and azobenzene/hydrazobenzene intermediates before complete conversion to aniline. These results indicate that for the Pt/OMS-2 the hydrogenation proceeds predominantly over the support with the metal acting to dissociate the hydrogen. In the case of the Pd/OMS-2 both the hydrogenation and the hydrogen adsorption occur on the metal sites.

Wavelet entropy assesses the degree of order or disorder in signals and presents this complex information in a simple metric. Relative wavelet entropy assesses the similarity between the spectral distributions of two signals, again in a simple metric. Wavelet entropy is therefore potentially a very attractive tool for waveform analysis. The ability of this method to track the effects of pharmacologic modulation of vascular function on Doppler blood velocity waveforms was assessed. Waveforms were captured from ophthalmic arteries of 10 healthy subjects at baseline, after the administration of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) and after two doses of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME) to produce vasodilation and vasoconstriction, respectively. Wavelet entropy had a tendency to decrease from baseline in response to GTN, but significantly increased after the administration of L-NAME (mean: 1.60 ± 0.07 after 0.25 mg/kg and 1.72 ± 0.13 after 0.5 mg/kg vs. 1.50 ± 0.10 at baseline, p < 0.05). Relative wavelet entropy had a spectral distribution from increasing doses of L-NAME comparable to baseline, 0.07 ± 0.04 and 0.08 ± 0.03, respectively, whereas GTN had the most dissimilar spectral distribution compared with baseline (0.17 ± 0.08, p = 0.002). Wavelet entropy can detect subtle changes in Doppler blood velocity waveform structure in response to nitric-oxide-mediated changes in arteriolar smooth muscle tone.
