A new synthetic protocol for the hydroxymethylation of terminal acetylenes is described that involves stoichiometric Carreira alkynylation with solid paraformaldehyde (HO[CH2O]nH) in PhMe at 60 oC. Significantly, the method can be successfully applied on acetylenes that possess base-sensitive ester functionality and heterocyclic rings that readily undergo metallation. While N-methylephedrine (NME) is generally the best Zn(OTf)2-coordinating ligand for promoting hydroxymethylation, TMEDA can serve as a replacement.

Yttrium triflate or triflic acid catalysed Povarov reaction of methyl anthranilate with ethyl vinyl ether, both as aldehyde surrogate and as alkene, gave the desired 2-methyl-4-ethoxytetrahydroquinoline diastereoisomers as the major products along with four component coupling von Miller adducts. A proton NMR-study, using yttrium triflate as catalyst, revealed that the cis-diastereoisomers were the initial major products in both the Povarov and von Miller reactions but that these isomerised to the trans-diastereoisomers under the reaction conditions. Two distinct pathways for forming von Miller adducts were uncovered with the initial Povarov products being converted to von Miller adducts under the reaction conditions. Replacement of the 4-ethoxy with a 4-methoxy group under acidic conditions gave predominantly the trans-diastereoisomer, which was subsequently converted to a cis/trans mixture of the tetrahydroquinoline antibiotic helquinoline. It was also possible to convert the von Miller products to Povarov products under acidic conditions

There is provided a process for the extn. of at least one arom. compd. from a mixt. with at least one aliph. hydrocarbon, which process comprises contacting said mixt. with a salt that is in a liq. state at a temp. below 150°C, said salt having a cation which comprises an arom. nitrogen-contg. heterocyclic ring system, in which a nitrogen atom forming part of said ring system is quaternized and in which said ring system is substituted by at least one electron-withdrawing substituent. Some of said salts are novel. [on SciFinder(R)]

The addition of carbon dioxide to four superbase ionic liquids, [P3333][Benzim], [P3333][124Triz], [P3333][123Triz] and [P3333][Bentriz] was studied using a molecular DFT approach involving anions alone and individual ion pairs. Intermolecular bonding within the individual ion pairs is characterised by a number of weak hydrogen bonds, with the superbase anion geometrically arranged so as to maximize interactions between the heterocyclic N atoms and the cation. The pairing energies show no correlation to the observed CO2 adsorption capacity. Addition of CO2 to the anion alone clearly resulted in the formation of a covalently-bound carbamate function with the strength of binding correlated to experimental capacity. In the ion pair however the cation significantly alters the nature of the bonding such that the overall cohesive energy is reduced. Formation of a strong carbamate function occurs at the expense of weakening the interaction between anion and cation. In the more weakly absorbing ion pairs which contain [123Triz]- and [Bentriz]-, the carbamate-functionalised systems are very close in energy to adducts in which CO2 is more weakly bound, suggesting an equilibrium between the chemi- and physisorbed CO2.
