In light of the current world economic and environmental crisis due in part to
unsustainable development and poor financial planning, 21st Century engineers are faced with unprecedented challenges of developing a sustainable world in balance with the forces of nature to combat global environmental, social and economic crises. The European Union, the United States of America and a number of other countries have identified that smart solutions and highly skilled professionals are needed to survive climate change and create long-term prosperity. In this paper the evolution of the changing career of the engineer will be presented. The policy background to the current system of engineering education at bachelor’s and graduate level in Ireland will be introduced and perceptions of engineering as a profession by society in general, and by
school leavers selecting third level courses will be discussed. The role of the engineer as a specialist, expert or generalist will also be studied in terms of the changing demands and needs of society. Finally the responsibility of universities, through broad-based multidisciplinary teaching and training, to prepare the next crop of engineers will be examined.

Several commercial titania photocatalyst powders were formed into thin (ca. 350 mu m), 25 mm diameter ceramic wafers, sputter deposited with Pt on one side. The activities of each of the ceramic wafers were tested for hydrogen and oxygen evolution from aqueous sacrificial systems. The commercial sample PC50 (Millennium Chemicals, UK) yielded reproducible ceramic wafers with high activity for water photoreduction. Many of the ceramic wafers displayed low water photo-oxidation activities; however, these were greatly increased with addition of a NiO co-catalyst. In a selected case, hydrogen evolution activity was compared between a PC50 wafer and an identical weight of platinised PC50 powder suspension. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

NiTi alloys have been widely used in the applications for micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS), which often involve some precise and complex motion control. However, when using the NiTi alloys in MEMS application, the main problem to be considered is the degradation of functional property during cycling loading. This also stresses the importance of accurate prediction of the functional behavior of NiTi alloys. In the last two decades, a large number of constitutive models have been proposed to achieve the task. A portion of them focused on the deformation behavior of NiTi alloys under cyclic loading, which is a practical and non-negligible situation. Despite of the scale of modeling studies of the field in NiTi alloys, two experimental observations under uniaxial tension loading have not received proper attentions. First, a deviation from linearity well before the stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) has not been modeled. Recent experiments confirmed that it is caused by the formation of stress-induced R phase. Second, the influence of the well-known localized Lüders-like SIMT on the macroscopic behavior of NiTi alloys, in particular the residual strain during cyclic loading, has not been addressed. In response, we develop a 1-D phenomenological constitutive model for NiTi alloys with two novel features: the formation of stress-induced R phase and the explicit modeling of the localized Lüders-like SIMT. The derived constitutive relations are simple and at the same time sufficient to describe the behavior of NiTi alloys. The accumulation of residual strain caused by R phase under different loading schemes is accurately described by the proposed model. Also, the residual strain caused by irreversible SIMT at different maximum loading strain under cyclic tension loading in individual samples can be explained by and fitted into a single equation in the proposed model. These results show that the proposed model successfully captures the behavior of R phase and the essence of localized SIMT.

Ultrasonic welding process can be used for bonding metal foils which is the fundament of ultrasonic consolidation (UC). UC process can be used to embed reinforcement fibres such as SiC fibres within an aluminum matrix materials. In this research we are investigating the phenomena occurring in the microstructure of the parts during ultrasonic welding process to obtain better understanding about how and why the process works. High-resolution electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) is used to study the effects of the vibration on the evolution of microstructure in AA3003. The inverse pole figures (IPF) and the correlated misorientation angle distribution of the mentioned samples are obtained. The characteristics of the crystallographic orientation, the grain structure and the grain boundary are analyzed to find the effect of ultrasonic vibration on the microstructure and microtexture of the bond. The ultrasonic vibration will lead to exceptional refinement of grains to a micron level along the bond area and affect the crystallographic orientation. Ultrasonic vibration results in a very weak texture. Plastic flow occurs in the grain after welding process and there is additional plastic flow around the fibre which leads to the fibre embedding. © 2009 Editorial Board of CHINA WELDING.

Ultrasonic metal welding can be used to join two metal foils. There are two different effects under ultrasonic welding. They are surface effect and volume effect. These two effects were validated under macro experiments. Then how to validate in micro test is seldom researched. EBSD method was used to research the microstructure evolution of AA6061 under ultrasonic welding. The image maps indicating all Euler angle and the correlated misorientation angle distribution of both original foil and welding sample were got by EBSD in order to understand how ultrasonic welding affect the grain orientation and microstructure. The test shows that after ultrasonic vibration, the grain size has little change. And ultrasonic vibration results in a very weak texture. FEM results also validate these conclusions.

Ultrasonic consolidation (UC) uses high frequency (20-40KHz) mechanical vibrations to produce a solid-state metallurgical bond (weld) between metal foils. UC as a novel layered manufacturing technique is used in this research to embed reinforcing members such as silicon carbide fibers into the aluminium alloy 6061's matrices. It is known that UC induce volume and surface effect in the material it is acting on. Both effects are employed in embedding active/passive elements in the metal matrix. Whilst the process and the two effects are used and identified at macro level, what is happening at micro level is unknown and hardly studied. In this research we are investigating the phenomena occurring in the microstructure of the parts during UC process to obtain better understanding about how and why the process works. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development investigated numeracy proficiency among adults of working age in 23 countries across the world. Finland had the highest mean numeracy proficiency for people in the 16 – 24 age group while Northern Ireland’s score was below the mean for all the countries. An international collaboration has been undertaken to investigate the prevalence of mathematics within the secondary education systems in Northern Ireland and Finland, to highlight particular issues associated with transition into university and consider whether aspects of the Finnish experience are applicable elsewhere. In both Northern Ireland and Finland, at age 16, about half of school students continue into upper secondary level following their compulsory education. The upper secondary curriculum in Northern Ireland involves a focus on three subjects while Finnish students study a very wide range of subjects with about two-thirds of the courses being compulsory. The number of compulsory courses in maths is proportionally large; this means that all upper secondary pupils in Finland (about 55% of the population) follow a curriculum which has a formal maths content of 8%, at the very minimum. In contrast, recent data have indicated that only about 13% of Northern Ireland school leavers studied mathematics in upper secondary school. The compulsory courses of the advanced maths syllabus in Finland are largely composed of pure maths with a small amount of statistics but no mechanics. They lack some topics (for example, in advanced calculus and numerical methods for integration) which are core in Northern Ireland. This is not surprising given the much broader curriculum within upper secondary education in Finland. In both countries, there is a wide variation in the mathematical skills of school leavers. However, given the prevalence of maths within upper secondary education in Finland, it is to be expected that young adults in that country demonstrate high numeracy proficiency.

The current worldwide nursing shortage and high attrition of nursing students remain a challenge for the nursing profession. The aim of this paper was to investigate how key psychological attributes and constructions differentiate between completers and non-completers of nursing education. A questionnaire including measures of gender role identity and perceived gender appropriateness of careers was administered to 384 students early in the first year of the course. At the end of the programme attrition rates were obtained. The findings indicate that males were more likely to leave the course than females. Furthermore, those who completed the course tended to view nursing as more appropriate for women, in contrast to the non-completers who had less gender typed views. The female-dominated nature of nursing, prevalent stereotypes and gender bias inherent in nursing education seem to make this an uncomfortable place for males and those with less gendered typed views. Whilst it is acknowledged that attrition is undoubtedly a complex issue with many contributing factors, the nursing profession need to take steps to address this bias to ensure their profession is open equally to both female and male recruits.

The accurate definition of the extreme wave loads which act on offshore structures represents a significant challenge for design engineers and even with decades of empirical data to base designs upon there are still failures attributed to wave loading. The environmental conditions which cause these loads are infrequent and highly non-linear which means that they are not well understood or simple to describe. If the structure is large enough to affect the incident wave significantly further non-linear effects can influence the loading. Moreover if the structure is floating and excited by the wave field then its responses, which are also likely to be highly non-linear, must be included in the analysis. This makes the description of the loading on such a structure difficult to determine and the design codes will often suggest employing various tools including small scale experiments, numerical and analytical methods, as well as empirical data if available.
Wave Energy Converters (WECs) are a new class of offshore structure which pose new design challenges, lacking the design codes and empirical data found in other industries. These machines are located in highly exposed and energetic sites, designed to be excited by the waves and will be expected to withstand extreme conditions over their 25 year design life. One such WEC is being developed by Aquamarine Power Ltd and is called Oyster. Oyster is a buoyant flap which is hinged close to the seabed, in water depths of 10 to 15m, piercing the water surface. The flap is driven back and forth by the action of the waves and this mechanical energy is then converted to electricity.
It has been identified in previous experiments that Oyster is not only subject to wave impacts but it occasionally slams into the water surface with high angular velocity. This slamming effect has been identified as an extreme load case and work is ongoing to describe it in terms of the pressure exerted on the outer skin and the transfer of this short duration impulsive load through various parts of the structure.
This paper describes a series of 40th scale experiments undertaken to investigate the pressure on the face of the flap during the slamming event. A vertical array of pressure sensors are used to measure the pressure exerted on the flap. Characteristics of the slam pressure such as the rise time, magnitude, spatial distribution and temporal evolution are revealed. Similarities are drawn between this slamming phenomenon and the classical water entry problems, such as ship hull slamming. With this similitude identified, common analytical tools are used to predict the slam pressure which is compared to that measured in the experiment.

Parasites and pathogens are ubiquitous and act as an important selection pressure on animals. Here, drawing primarily on our own research, mostly on insects, we illustrate how host-parasite interactions have played a role in the evolution of a range of phenomena, including animal coloration, social behavior, foraging ecology, sexual selection, and life-history tradeoffs, as well as how variation in host behavior and ecology can drive variation in parasitism risk and host allocation of resources to immunity and other antiparasite defenses. We conclude by identifying key areas for future study.
